We have added the cream of the UEFA Cup to our improved European Power Rankings and CSKA Moscow have made an impressive entrance in the top 20.
Who is in: All teams still in the Champions League and UEFA Cup are now eligible, meaning the addition of 24 clubs.
Who is out: The eight teams who finished bottom of their Champions League groups and are eliminated from Europe.
The consequence is that we have six new entries into the top 20, the most impressive of whom are CSKA Moscow.
The Russian side's strong UEFA Cup group stage performance sees them catapult in to fourth place overall. However, as the Russian Premier League has not kicked off yet, they are using last season's domestic coefficient so things could change quickly once the 2009 campaign gets under way.
The other five newcomers are Metalist Kharkiv, Standard Liege, Hamburg, Olympiacos and Wolfsburg.
Relatively poor points hauls from the group stage mean the likes of Aston Villa, Milan and Valencia cannot crack the top 20.
Despite drawing at the weekend, Barcelona remain well clear at the top as the Champions League last 16 draws near.
European Power Rankings (previous rankings in brackets):
1. (1) Barcelona - 23.88
2. (2) Liverpool - 22.47
3. (3) Real Madrid - 20.87
4. (-) CSKA Moscow - 20.40
5. (4) Bayern - 20.22
6. (5=) Manchester United - 20.00
7. (5=) Juventus - 19.79
8. (7) Porto - 19.50
9. (9) Chelsea - 18.97
10. (-) Metalist Kharkiv - 18.71
11. (8) Sporting Lisbon - 18.50
12. (12) Lyon - 18.35
13=. (10) Roma - 18.33
13=. (11) Internazionale - 18.33
15. (13) Arsenal - 17.97
16. (-) Standard Liege - 17.91

18. (-) Hamburg - 17.78
19. (-) Olympiacos - 17.66

HOW IT WORKS
Scores are based on points per game in domestic league, Champions League and UEFA Cup games.
Domestic points per game are multiplied by the league coefficient - either 4, 4.5 or 5 - with teams in stronger leagues getting more credit.
League coefficients:
5 - England, Italy, Spain
4.5 - Germany, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Russia
4 - Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine
Champions League victories are counted as three points for a win. They are all multiplied by a coefficient of 5. Matches in the group stage and beyond are counted.
UEFA Cup victories are counted as three points for a win. They are all multiplied by a coefficient of 4. Matches in the group stage and beyond are counted.
Example: Barcelona
60 points from 23 Liga games = 2.61 points per game.
Multiplied by league coefficient of five - 2.61 x 5 = 13.04
Thirteen points from six Champions League game = 2.17 points per game.
Multiplied by European coefficient of five - 10.83
Total score = 13.04 + 10.83 = 23.88

"REAL MADRID should be on top of the ranking... they'r the best
manU goes second,,, and
barca third..
liverpool? i'm sorry, they'r no match with real..pity liverpool...haha"
..
What a @#$% you must feel now :0 :-)
united top? you are joking? i think on recent form barcelona ARE the team to beat.but i am pleased to see my own team, the bianconeri right back up there and going strong.
LFC ABOVE MAN U i guess were better then,...,.,
I don't the posyion of Arsenal, they need go a little further. come on arsenal!
Liverpool above Manchester United? Not sure about that one! The Premiership table suggests otherwise...
But more importantly: Wolfsburg number 20! Whoo! (' ',)
EM THE RANKING IS UNFAIR.MANCESTER UNITED DESERVE TO BE NUMBER ONE, B/C OF THE TYPE OF GAME THEY ARE PLAYING. THEY WON WORLD CUP FIFA CLUB THEY RUN UNBEATEN AND THEY DO NOT CONCEDE GOALS FOR THIRTEEN LEAGUE GAMES ,STILL THEY THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD, SO THEY ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD,. THEN BARCA DESERVE SECOND POSITION FOLLOWED BY REAL MADRID.4RM ATOTO ABA ,,,,,,,NEW DELHI INDIA
You guys shouldn't be paying any attention to this ranking. Math doesn't lie and there is no point in arguing with the outcome of the equations. It just makes you look stupid and blinkered.
This is obviously not a reflection on reality though. Think of it this way, if Liverpool were leading United in the league by one point having played four games more would you say the league table is stupid or would you say that United are potentially 11 points ahead of Liverpool?
Before Liverpool fans fly off the handle, I know that United are five points ahead having played the same number of games. I am using a hypothetical situation as an example.
i dont understand how it works anyway
man. u d best
This European Power Ranking is stupidness, as it is not a true reflection of the position of the clubs with the best leagues in Europe. The calculations are all miscalculations if I may rightly say so. The placings need to be revised. Man Utd should definitely be on top without doubt followed by Barca.
i wonder how come man u ar still no 6?world club champ already in hand...carling on the way...Fa seems no problem....league...one foot step....defender champ league....none team score goal to them since last 14 match....atleast man U should be behind barca....so the final result....only can decide when they meet at final...
Poor old Man ure can`t bear the thought of the mighty Liverpool being in front of them.
for now, but they wont always be like that
this is stupid
man utd r champions of europe and the world!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry ?
REAL MADRID should be on top of the ranking... they'r the best
manU goes second,,, and
barca third..
liverpool? i'm sorry, they'r no match with real..pity liverpool...haha
hold up, guy below is right. take scotland for example, they arent half bad, a potenial 6 teams in europe isnt half bad. but yet they get 3.5. the ratings are fine.
116 these wouldn't work as the english teams would all be top
I think the ranking should be like this:
England- 7 (No doubt PL is the best)
Italy, Spain- 6
Germay, France- 5
Portugal,Netherlands, Russia-4
Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine- 3.7
others-3.5
Champion League- 8
i would add i think for my ranking system i think the coefficient should be
5 - England, Italy, Spain
4.75 - Germany, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Russia
4.5 - Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine
5 - Champions League
4.5 - Uefa Cup
how is it fair that barcelona loose 0.37 (0.365612648) points for drawing in the league but the draw in there next champions league game they loose 0.83 (0.83333333) points. this hardly seems fair. why wont you do the average points in all compitions
e.g. ((Total League Points*Coefficent of league)+(Total Cup Points*Coefficent of cup))/total number of games
This is what the table should look like
barcelona would be (60*5)+(13*5)/29 = 12.5862
Man utd would be (56*5)+(10*5)/30 = 11.0000
Liverpool would be (54*5)+(14*5)/31 = 10.9677
R Madrid would be (50*5)+(12*5)/29 = 10.6897
Inter would be (56*5)+(8*5)/30 = 10.6667
Juventus would be (47*5)+(12*5)/30 = 9.8333
Porto would be (38*4.5)+(12*5)/24 = 9.6250
Villa would be (51*5)+(6*4)/29 = 9.6207
Bayern would be (38*4.5)+(14*5)/26 = 9.2692
Lyon would be (49*4.5)+(14*5)/30 = 9.1833
these are the only ones i have done, the otheres would fit into it.
hope this solves the problem of the league table being rubbish.
mine is correct as of 8.30pm 17/02/2009
