British fourth seed Anne Keothavong was forced to recover from a set down to book her place in the second round in Memphis.

TENNIS 2009 Australian Open Britain's Anne Keothavong - 0

Keothavong, who is enjoying a career-high world ranking of 52, rallied from the disappointing first set to beat Italy's Maria Elena Camerin 3-6 6-3 6-1.

Britain's other representative in the draw, Melanie South, was beaten 6-2 6-2 by Czech third seed Lucie Safarova, who needed just 62 minutes to book her place in the second round.

Belarussian second seed Victoria Azarenka began her comeback from the virus that forced her to withdraw in the fourth round of the Australian Open with a convincing 6-2 6-2 victory over American Vavara Lepchenko.

Azarenka was leading eventual champion Serena Williams in the round of 32 at the Australian Open when a combination of the virus and the sweltering heat in Melbourne left the 19-year-old requiring assistance to walk off the court.

German sixth seed Sabine Lisicki beat Russia's Ekaterina Bychkova 6-3 6-3, French eighth seed Pauline Parmentier downed compatriot Julie Coin 7-6(8) 4-6 6-1, while Dutch qualifier Michaella Krajicek upset Russian seventh seed Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1 6-4.
