Premier League - Paper Round: Wenger 'goes crazy,' set for clear-out
Fri, 17 Feb 08:46:00 2012
The fall-out from Arsenal's horror show in Milan continues with reports in a number of papers that Arsene Wenger "went crazy" during training Thursday.
The Daily Telegraph's source used the "crazy" adjective while the Daily Mirror said Wenger "shouted and swore at the players" and that some of the players had never seen so angry in the wake of the 4-0 Champions League mauling in Milan.
There is now expected to be a summer clear out at the club with a number of players looking to be on borrowed time.
The Telegraph says: "several prominent first-team players are now playing for their future, including Theo Walcott, Tomas Rosicky and Andrei Arshavin, whose contracts expire over the next 18 months but have yet to secure new deals.
"Arsenal will also consider offers for Marouane Chamakh and Sebastien Squillaci, who have barely featured this season, while other fringe players, such as Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela, Denilson and Manuel Almunia, are finally expected to be sold."
The players the Telegraph links with moves to the Emirates are: Cologne’s Lukas Podolski, Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Götze and the Lille playmaker Eden Hazard but they add that Wenger "knows that Arsenal would have little hope of competing for such sought-after players if they fail to reach next season’s Champions League."
Meanwhile, most of the papers pick up on reports from France yesterday, reported on this website, that Paris St-Germain were interested in Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.
However, according to the Sun, the Reds will block any moves for the striker with Suarez having been told by the club that he does have a future on Merseyside despite being forced to apologise for his refusal to shake Patrice Evra's hand last weekend.
There are reports in a few papers that Tottenham look set to be taken over by American entertainment giants AEG who are preparing a £450 million bid.
The Daily Mail is one such paper as they reveal that Spurs' Bahamas-based owner Joe Lewis has reportedly been in talks with Philip Anschutz, owner of AEG, who has a personal fortune of £4.4 billion. Should a deal be completed, current chairman Daniel Levy would remain in place. (Daily Mail)
To some more transfer rumours and Manchester United are after Valencia centre-back Adil Rami. They face stiff competition from Barcelona for the £20million-rated French star - but are ready to match Valencia's valuation. (The Sun)
Tottenham scouts ran the rule over £12m-rated Ajax centre back Jan Vertonghen. The 24-year-old Belgium star gave a solid display against Manchester United and Tottenham plan to watch him again. (Daily Mail)
Wolves will continue their search for Mick McCarthy's successor on Friday with Steve Bruce set to be interviewed by club owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey. (Various)
Roberto Mancini and Sir Alex Ferguson are squaring up for a battle to sign Derby wonderkid Will Hughes. Mancini's Manchester City and neighbours and title rivals United want the U17 star, who was the talk of last week's Algarve Tournament in Portugal. (The Daily Mirror)
Cardiff are lining up a loan swoop for Peter Lovenkrands. Newcastle's Danish striker, 32, has made just two Premier League starts this season. (The Sun)
Fulham are watching Ghana defender Isaac Vorsah, 23, of Hoffenheim. (Daily Mail)
And finally, Sheffield United goalkeeper George Long has signed a new four-year deal at Sheffield United - despite interest from Manchester United. (The Sun)

Comment 213 chrisrowe is spot on
wenger is sacrificeing personal glory for the long term future of the club it has to be said he was let down by those players in milan they looked like a sunday team i have never seen such a half assed level of play in ten years of watching football
time for a clearout .
united united united !
Djourou wouldn't get on a League 2 side let a lone a "top 4" side
There is one man and one man only who has ruined arsenal football club and his name is peter hill wood. The man is a dinasour who has held us back for years. Usmanov and Dein wanted to buy the club and spend millions to make us the best in the world. Who helped make us great ? Dein who got Wenger the players he wanted ? Dein who moved us to the emirates ? Dein who would have given his heart and soul into winning us trophys ? Dein. Now lets look at the facts. Who got rid of Dein ? Hill wood. Who agreed to let this useless yank onto the board ? Hill wood who is limiting our spending ? Hill wood who has been ruining this club despite him having no shares in it ? Hill wood. I dont blame Wenger I blame the board KROENKE HILL WOOD AND GAZIDIS OUT !!! bring back David Dean and Usmanov they want us back where we belong. NUMBER ONE !!!!
Why,s he blowing his top all of a sudden. Has it finally sunk in that his team is no good. van persie has been the only shining star though now his brilliance has dried up the team look average at best
Cahill and Mata ain't gonna win anything for Chelsea.Saved a bit there.Walcott hasn't really improved .
Yeah right, Wenger having a clear out, think I read those same headlines last summer
Enough is enough, Wenger cant or wont spend, but sucess = money. Why go for the (raise ticket prices and buy too young and not good enough players to make money) When if we was to speculate to accumalate (pay the going rate, like Cahill & Mata for good players that will win you something and add value to the club) Every transfer window he huffs and puffs about good players, looses them to other clubs and settles on unknown kids who you never see for 5 years then are not good enough and old, cheap or loan players ( Arteta, Benayoun, Mertesacker, Henry, Campbell, Lehmann etc!!! Hats off to Arsene for taking us to a new stadium and keeping us up there but he seems to be wrapped up in he's blinkered view of players and how to get sucess, perhaps its time to move on (a new broom)
i'll bet the three mentioned are not going anywhere. arsene loves those mediocre players. he is still totally convinced that theo will soon blossom into a world-beater, that rosicky will again be a creative midfield supremo and arshavin will captain russia and a world 11. save yourself arsene and drop these flops. djourou, squilaci, diaby and bentner should be top of your clear-out list.
Mind the gap gooners :)
we will never get mario gotze and lukas podolski an eden hazard! DREAM ON
Yet another report that Suarez apologised to Man U for his handshake peerformance. Read the apologies again (Both Dalglish & Suarez). Neither apologise to Man U or Evra, neither even mention them. They apologise to LFC. End of story. As for Arsene and Arsenal, they will both profit from a good clearout, a bit like me on a Sunday morning...
David (203). Do you think it was the pies ?
Hi Andrew (148) Lesson 3 should be, Get a rich Arab
To all the lolsers in the Eaglet...seven sister's road....hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
Wengar has been an exceptional Manager but it is difficult not to believe that he is on the decline.Clough deteriorated in a very sad way and I genuinely hope this does not happen to Arsene. The one man who has not deteriorated is Fergie.Nobody can deny his genius has been the wat he keeps on produceing winning teams
donto33...no mate he's throwin up in d goons hospitality area before Spurs visit and cause havoc with 3 nil win...lolsers.
Bring back a Spurs legend...Terry Neil, Pat Jennings ...n Sol Campbell to boot...lolsers.
