Wolves search goes on

Wolves will continue their search for Mick McCarthy's successor on Friday with Steve Bruce set to be interviewed by club owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey, Press Association Sport understands.

Bookmakers favourite Alan Curbishley is understood to have created a favourable impression when he spoke to Morgan and Moxey on Thursday and remains in pole position to replace the sacked McCarthy.

He is believed to have outlined his plans for establishing the midlands club in the Barclays Premier League after three years of battling to avoid the drop.

Curbishley showed those qualities in more than a decade in charge at Charlton and also at West Ham and is keen to return to the game after a three and a half year absence.

He was also one of the contenders for the England post in 2006 after Sven Goran Eriksson announced he was quitting after that summer's World Cup in Germany. But former Birmingham, Wigan and Sunderland boss Bruce is also under sufficient consideration to have been granted the chance to outline his credentials to Morgan and Moxey.

Wolves striker Kevin Doyle believes McCarthy's successor will have a "fighting chance" of ensuring the club stay up despite last weekend's 5-1 mauling by West Brom.

That setback meant Wolves dropped into the bottom three but they do not play again until the trip to Newcastle on February 25.

Republic of Ireland international Doyle said: "We've had ups and downs. But we seem to be reasonably good at bouncing back. We got beat badly by Liverpool and then came back to beat QPR.

"We'll go to Newcastle in a few days time thinking we can bounce back in the same way. We've got games to go where we can pick up points. There are a few teams around us we can get above and we've 13 games in which to do it so let's be positive.

We're not cast adrift in anyway, we're not really struggling. We are in a good position to get out of it. We've given ourselves a fighting chance. We feel we can pick up points along the way."

  1. As I have said, I am not a fan of either Bruce, Warnock or Curbishley, but just a thought Wolves fans.
If Warnock were selected at least he has a high profile, he would come with Keith Curle (old wolves player) and he would be busting a gut to put one over on QPR the club that sacked him and one of Wolves relegation rivals.
And if the worst happened I feel he would get us back up quickly. Just a thought. But please, anyone but Bruce.

  2. As prob the only Wolves supporter from Liverpool man and boy !!!TOTALY agree Mick had to go ! we owe Mick thanks for getting us to the prem... but he should have gone half way through the reason, the club has now missed the chance of the likes of Martin O'neil and Mark Hughes and now only left with second raters !! we only have to look to the players Mick bought t!!! how many offers for any of them during transfer windows durring our time in the prem have the club recieve......any ???how many would get into any team in the top half of the prem ? not many..... and almost those who could he inherited them !!!!

  3. Why are we going down the same road as 10 yrs ago building up the ground when you haven't got a premier
team to play in it,mick lets our good players on loan and keep the likes of edwards, foley, henry, why didn't he give
voakes, dougherty gudei, elokubi who at least put some fight in the team

  5. Why, why, why are they looking at such a poor bunch? Mick McCarthy falls into the same category as Steve Bruce and Neil Warnock, all of them good Championship managers but devoid of the skill and talent to manage a Premiership side. Alan Curbishly may be able to do the job but my favourite for the job would be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Look what he has done with an average Norwegian side and, much more importantly, he learned his management skills under Sir Alex at Man U who you have to admit has been the best, most consistant manager in the Premiership since it first began.
But if we avoid the drop this year they then have to invest in some real players and stop picking up 'jobbing players' from other clubs that are or have been failing. The likes of Sunderland, QPR, Aston Villa, Fulham and Stoke have all invested in some decent Premiership players, rather than digging about in the Scottish second tier, and have moved well ahead of Wolves as a result. Those clubs have similar support and resources but have decided that they have to spend to consolidate their position. Wolves need to do the same.

  6. Being a born and bread Wolverhampton Man of 60 years young, who has only the old Gold and Black in his veins,I truly think that there is something fundamentally wrong with our club. From the very heart of the board with the exception of Sir Jack Hayward himself, i can see no ambition or willingness to invest the rewards of being in the Premier Div for the benefit 0f the playing staff.Little or no money has been set aside to purchase any decent Premier players,so no wonder a succession of Managers have failed to deliver what the Fan base deserves. Therefore i predict that whoever the Board appoints the result will be the same down the line in a few seasons time....ie Failure and disapointment for the long suffering wonderful Fans unless they release some funds to the new Manager.

  7. As a West Ham fan I am disappointed by the way Mick McCarthy was sacked, the players let him down, the club has let the fans down.Mick did the best he could with the players he signed on,it's obvious they did not want to play for Wolves, Where is the spirit of the team of 1955 to 1962?they would knock spots off this lot and die for the club."RIP"Billy Wright

  8. The main problem is it doesn`t matter who you put in charge the team is not good enough and the club haven`t spent enough over the last three years to even consolidate them selves in the prem. and this will still carry on year after year when you have an accountant as a chairman. Thats why stoke got rid ov him, and look at them now.

  9. Again anyone but Steve Bruce,he was promoted at Birmingham with another man's squad and did nothing with his other teams. With Warnock we would see Keith Curle again.

  11. Anyone but Steve Bruce......Think we should've sacked Mick at the end of last season when Sam Alladyce was still available

  12. Please Please not Steve Bruce - He is another failed manager. Limited success with Blues is not a selling point but his record with Sunderland tells the true story. I think Morgan is desperate to even consider people like Bruce and Warnock. But if I were to select one on these three it would be Curbs and then Warnock - God help us.
