Mon 17 Mar, 10:30 AM

Veteran Portsmouth goalkeeper David James has set himself the target of representing England at the 2010 World Cup.James, who recently put pen-to-paper on a new two-and-half-year contract at Fratton Park, has been in superb form this season.

The 37-year-old's impressive displays saw him named as Fabio Capello's No.1 for the Italian's first game in charge of England against Switzerland in February.

And James is sure he can continue to demonstrate his excellent form through to the World Cup finals in South Africa in the summer of 2010, even though he will be a month short of his 40th birthday.

"I've signed a new contract with Portsmouth that gives me clearance beyond the World Cup. My goal is to be involved in that," he said in The Daily Telegraph.

"What happens between now and then we'll just have to see, but I'm happy with my performances and happy with football. If I can keep performing, why just limit myself to league football?

"Football is a tough game and it is quite literally a survival of the fittest. The fact that he [Capello] selected me means I must be doing something right."
