Scottish Premier League - Livingston offer Gretna ground

Eurosport - Mon, 17 Mar 18:35:00 2008

Scottish crisis-club Gretna will play their next two scheduled SPL home games at Livingston's Almondvale Stadium.

Gretna - 0

The administration-hit club face Celtic on Sunday before playing Inverness on April 5 at the West Lothian ground.

The Scottish Premier League announced the move following a day of discussions sparked by the ongoing pitch problems at Fir Park.

Motherwell, Gretna's landlords, admitted drastic action was needed after Saturday's Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash against Celtic fell victim to the latest in a series of postponements at the Lanarkshire ground.

The postponement of Saturday's game added to the fixture pile-up facing the SPL, with five matches still unscheduled ahead of the split on April 5.

SPL chief executive Lex Gold said: "This is the most difficult and unprecedented fixture situation that we have faced.

"Our priority over the past weekend has been to confirm the arrangements for Gretna's match against Celtic, which will now take place in Livingston.

"Arrangements are also now in place for Gretna's match against Inverness CT and we thank Livingston, and the other clubs with whom we have been in discussion, for their assistance.

"The remaining Gretna home game against St Mirren will be allocated in the coming days."

Pitch specialists visited Fir Park on Monday and their findings will determine the fate of Motherwell's forthcoming home matches.

Gold added: "Talks are ongoing in relation to the Motherwell v Hibernian fixture scheduled for March 29 with a range of options being explored.

"Further developments in relation to Motherwell's other home games will depend on the work currently being done to assess when Fir Park will be available again for our matches."

First Division Livingston decommissioned their undersoil heating - an SPL requirement - in pre-season but the SPL revealed it would be available if necessary.

Motherwell are awaiting a report from a team of experts brought in to study the pitch today.

The club admitted at the weekend that the pitch needed a complete overhaul in the summer with the turf, soil, drainage and undersoil heating to be ripped out.

But they are considering their options until the end of the season with a home match being played away from Fir Park still a possibility.

A club spokesman said: "We are going through a decision-making process that we have got to get right.

"The fact we have to get it right means we are going through all available possibilities."

Meanwhile, with the venue decided, Gretna have assured fans they have enough cash to ensure the Celtic match goes ahead.

The club slumped into administration last Wednesday and doubt was cast over their remaining fixtures.

But it is understood a cash advance from the SPL allowed them to fulfil their fixture against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Saturday.

However, caretaker manager Mick Wadsworth had to cope without several players who refused to play after their wages went unpaid last week.

And the likes of Chris Innes and Greg Fleming, who sat out the 3-0 defeat, are unlikely to return on Sunday.

A Gretna spokesman told PA Sport: "Next week's game is not in question and it will go ahead, that's the impression we have got from the administrators.

"It is after that game that it becomes more worrying because we only have one more home game before the league splits in two.

"We have to play it by ear and deal with everything on a daily basis.

"As it stands it will be the same team that played against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Saturday.

"But if other clubs come in for some of our players then there might be a few more losses.

"The players that did not play at Aberdeen were the players who had clubs interested in them.

"But there are complications about signing for other teams in terms of being released and signing contracts and we are waiting on FIFA to get back to us with a ruling.

"But a week is a long time in football and we will just have to wait and see."
