International Football - Ref could face death penalty

Reuters - Wed, 17 Mar 05:33:00 2010

World Cup referee Lu Jun could face punishment ranging from administrative sanction to the death penalty if found guilty in the ongoing probe into match-fixing in the domestic game.

Lu Jun chinese referee - 0

Lu, who officiated in two matches at the 2002 World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan, was one of three referees arrested in the last week.

If he is found guilty of having accepted bribes as a public servant, the severity of his punishment will depend on the amount of money involved.

Lu was dubbed the 'golden whistle' for his supposed integrity when China was in the thrall of the earlier 'black whistles' scandal some eight years ago.

Chinese Football Association chief Wei Di told Soccer News: "I was really shocked and hurt when Lu's name cropped up in the scandal.

"He is undoubtedly a first-rate referee in terms of working ability, but his morals are a far cry from his 'golden whistle' reputation."

The others arrested were 45-year-old Guangzhou official Zhou Weixin, who like Lu was retired, and Huang Junjie, an active FIFA international referee since 1998.

Huang, 43, has taken charge of several internationals, including World Cup qualifiers involving Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Wei, who said the police had not told him why the three officials had been arrested, took up his post after his predecessor Nan Yong became caught up in the scandal, leading to his arrest with his deputy Yang Yimin and referees committee chief Zhang Jianqiang.

The CFA have made the integrity of match officials a central plank in their attempts to reform the game and more than 200 referees were last week sent on a five-day 'Anti-corruption Rectification Education Camp'.

Wei said in future the selection of referees for matches would be an independent process.

"We will adopt a new mechanism to improve our management. No leader of the Chinese Football Association, including me, can decide which referee to use," he said.

As well as the individual prosecutions, Guangzhou and Chengdu were relegated from the top flight Chinese Super League, while Qingdao of the second division have been kicked out of professional football altogether for match-fixing.

The new CSL season is scheduled to begin on March 27.

  5. I was interested by the comment of 155 rick about the suggested rape and murder of his child.God forbid it ever happens but if it did, I and lots of others in this country would gladly volunteer to execute the perpetrator. The soft laws in this Country are exactly why our kids can't safely walk the streets and why on certain estates people are afraid to go out.

  11. neil m: Bill Shankly made that comment not Glenn Hoddle, he also said "there are 2 great teams in Liverpool, Liverpool 1st team & Liverpool reserves" I think even Fergie would admitt he was the greatest manager of all time as he has mentioned before he was in awe of shanks and regularly listened to interviews when he would deliver such quotes. We'll be back YNWA

  13. Don't commit a Capitol/Capital crime in a Country with the Death sentence. Same as knobs that Traffik drugs into them and suddenly think about what they have done after the event. If he is guilty I hope he drops the bubble on the others invovled, if not Tango Sierra. Death sentence seems a little harsh though, but then how high are the joy riding statistics in China. Bring back hanging here, we could do with improving our Donor system...

  14. The Chinese evil government are using the death sentence strategy to reduce their over populated country and also to make more money trading in human organ.FIFA should ban them from any form of competition if that ref is handed a death penalty. Chinese people pretend to be holy and focused yet they spread like virus to other countries and committing the most wicked of crimes under ground. Imagine Chinese parents sleeping with their kids ! China is just too fake to be taking serious.

  15. What bullsh*t ! if China thinks their population is too much for them to handle, they should allow other countries to be formed out of it's stupendous over populated country. As for them buying the whole of African Continent, sorry Africa is just using China to develop then chase them away because they are not such a good nation, country, culture and people to reckon with.

  16. Thanks God they will deal with this sickness of reapoffs. It affected us as Botswana when we played them in September 2009. Fix it China, you can do it. One thing about this country is, socialism that has done some wonders for this nation, I am a democrat though. Developments you lead, but reduce on your sensorship, I was in BEijing for the first time when Whacko Jacko passed on, and in some places I could only buy a sim card if I showed my passport and particulars. We don't do that in Botswana. Otherwise you are a very beautiful country.

  17. First i should say I wholeheartedly disagree witht he death penalty (even if someone raped and murdered my child as someone mentioned) However the people claiming it is simply a game are missing the point. This is not for a bad decision it is force large scale corruption. The penalty will depend on the amount of money involve. 2nd ask yourself why does a ref. take bribes, it is not because a given team wants to win at all costs it is to make money in illegal gambling rings - all gambling is illegal in China - so it is not just corruption but also a public and formerly respected public figure breaking a very serious law. People criticizing china and its government have no idea what a job they having running this huge and still very messy country. It is an archaic measure but one that in this case will act as a deterent ( i believe murders will generally murder anyway regardless of death penalty, but corruption the rewards is simply not enough surely), it also makes steps towards chowing the public (the main point) that some of thier best interests are being looked out otherwise riots will occur (not that they all want Death Pen of course). People criticizing China as a whole are seriously naive and deserve the angry words from the Chinese commenters. however the chinese making equally generalistic conclusions are just as bad..... you types always pick on the few stupid comments and ignore the more balanced ones and it is your loss. I live in china and i love it here - i find the people infiantely more pleasant than the average brit (iam btw) but the country hasa huge amount of problems and difficulties to overcome. I dont agree with how they are doing it but at the same time (in a less serious way) i dont agree with alot of what UK and USA does either (Iraq, falklands....) maybe people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. the only reaosn you should be put off going to china is if you are planning on smuggling drugs or the like otherwise no problem

you're a fan of Socialism then!!! what an idiot....

wake up and smell the coffee... China is run by the evilest of people,
anyone who thinks China is ''great'' even though they have one child policys and no human rights whatsoever is a complete idiot who watches too much X-factor and thinks Socialism and Facism is brilliant!
