Cheruiyot Set For Edinburgh Race

Thu 17 Apr, 03:09 PM

Rose Cheruiyot hopes to add the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run title to the victories she achieved in two of last year's sister races.

Cheruiyot won both Great Run events in Sunderland and Portsmouth over distances of 10 kilometres and 10 miles.

The 31-year-old Kenyan produced strong displays to head off the British challenge at both venues and will be hoping to continue her winning ways in the Scottish capital on May 4.

Cheruiyot will face a tough field in the 10K race, which also features Australia's 2004 World Cross Country champion Benita Johnson and Aniko Kalovics of Hungary.

She will also line-up against former European Cross Country title holder Hayley Yelling, who she defeated for the BUPA Great South Run crown in Portsmouth last October.

"Running is a way of life to Rose and she leapt at the opportunity to compete in Edinburgh," said Andy Caine the event's elite athletes' manager.

"She's married to former world 5,000 metres champion Ismael Kirui and they have three young children but both still manage to fit in their training slots.

"It would have been great to have Ismael also compete in Edinburgh, but it's his turn to baby-sit that weekend!"

Like many of her Kenyan colleagues, Cheruiyot is capable of competing at world-class level over distances from 10 kilometres to the marathon.

She has won the 2005 Berlin 25km road race, whilst three years earlier she took the German capital's half-marathon title.

Cheruiyot also stormed to a great victory in the 2006 Amsterdam marathon, after finishing runner-up over the same distance in Hamburg.

Victor Rothlin, last summer's World Championships marathon bronze medallist, has been added to the men's field, where he faces Commonwealth 10,000m gold medallist Boniface Kiprop from Uganda.

Caine is now waiting to hear from other potential starters - both men and women - who competed in the Flora London Marathon on Sunday.
