Valencia coach Ronald Koeman hopes his side's Copa del Rey triumph will inspire them to pull away from the La Liga relegation quagmire.

Los Che secured their seventh Copa del Rey title with a 3-1 victory over Getafe at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday night.

But the victory is in stark contrast to their league form, which has taken a dip in recent weeks.

Three consecutive defeats have seen them fall to within five points of the relegation places, and they travel to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday knowing that defeat could send them even closer to the drop zone.

"I hope we can work more calmly," said Koeman in the aftermath of the game.

"We need to think about the game that we have this Sunday and enjoy what we have done here, because it is has been nine years since Valencia won this title and it is important."

"I'm happy with the win," he added. "The team played well and went out strongly.

"The first opportunities we had we took advantage of, but the penalty made things difficult for us. We then could have killed the game off with two chances for [David] Villa, but Getafe were very determined and worked very hard."

"I know there are rumours about my future and sometimes the rumours are true, but until today nobody has told me anything," he said.

"It is not in my hands what happens, but if they want to say something to me tomorrow in the afternoon then I am at home."

Getafe boss Michael Laudrup, who saw his side crash out of the UEFA Cup last week after a dramatic 3-3 draw at home to Bayern Munich, said his players may have been overawed.

"We have felt the importance of the game," he said. "The team has gone out tense.

"Valencia scored with their first chance and also with their second. With the players that they have on the counter-attack and the good way that they defended it was very difficult.

"In the second half we have had two or three chances, and had a bit of bad luck with Granero's shot.

"In the end, Valencia have won because of those first 15 minutes. We cannot say that it is unfair that Valencia won, they scored three goals in the five or six chances that they had."

He added: "When you lose a final it is logical that your morale is low, last week it was worse.

"Life goes on though, and we need to accept it. There are six games left in the league and we need to finish well."
