Manchester City crashed out of the UEFA Cup after a 2-1 quarter-final second-leg win over Hamburg at Eastlands saw them lose 4-3 on aggregate.
City - who lost the first leg in Hamburg 3-1 - hit the woodwork twice through Elano while Felipe Caicedo put the ball over the bar from point-blank range as the Premier League side went agonisingly close to a win that would have eased the pressure on boss Mark Hughes.
The hosts went a goal behind after Paolo Guerrero (pictured) poked home following some sloppy defending but they equalised after David Jarolim handled in the box and Elano slotted the resultant penalty past Frank Rost.
The cash-rich Mancunians sensed a famous win when Caicedo showed some nifty footwork to finish on 50 minutes but, while they bombarded the Hamburg goal for the whole second half, they were unable to find a vital third goal.
Their best opportunities came to the impressive Elano, who sent a 30-yard free-kick crashing off the bar and put another set-piece from the edge of the box against the left-hand post.
Caicedo's miss was the key moment for City, though.
The 20-year-old Ecuador striker may have scored the winner on the night but he had a frustrating evening, constantly caught offside before he somehow missed the target from two yards out after Rost flapped at a corner.
Captain Richard Dunne was shown a second yellow card with a quarter of an hour remaining, effectively ending their hopes of forcing extra time, although they went close several times despite being down to 10 men.
Micah Richards put the ball over from a good position on the right, while substitute Daniel Sturridge had a far-post effort blocked after a corner was not cleared.
Hamburg could have extended their lead but Ivica Olic was denied by a brilliant stop from the legs of Shay Given.
Given went forward for two corners towards the end but, for all their efforts, City could not force a goal and Hamburg face fellow Germans Werder Bremen in the semi-finals.

119 check your map think you will find that manchester city are the only team in manchester just a shame united are in salford its a bit like spurs saying they are in london rather than tottenham
city are the r.u.b.i.s.h of the world
i think if it wouldnt have been for that clumsy buffoon dunne city would have won it i would get rid of him and richards next season .richards is one big time charlie and doesnt even chase back cos he is knackered thru going out clubbing
MANSHITTY WILL ALWAYS BE THE 2ND TEAM IN MANCHESTER
oops
unlucky on the night but not overall, if hamburg had taken all there chances in the first leg last night's game would have been academic!Look's like robinho needs a pay rise of at least £200,000 a week to score a goal, no wonder real madrid got rid.MUGS!!!
Outstanding effort by City, gutted with the result but that is the best I have seen us play for a long time. Just extremely unlucky on the night not to take 1 or more extra chance!
Robinho, Elano, Onuoha, Zabaleta, Ireland, Company, Given absolutely outstanding!
Caicedo also outstanding, just needs to work on the constant offsides!
Richards poor, Bridge poor, Dunne wreckless!
just unclucky i suppose well done though man city
it may just be that i've only watched him when he's had a shockerbur Dunne seems to be a liability, he is always in danger of getting sent off or gives away stupid fouls in dangerous areas when there is no need... its a good thing you've got some money in the bank because to challenge for anything you need to get a better defence.... given is an amazing keeper but even newcastles defence play better than man citys did last night
congrat man city man u fan but a sleeping gainn haswoke up
city r pooooooooooooo yid army 4 life and arsenal r ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- -------------
donneysbeck is a nob do da do da donnysbeck is a nob do da do da dey do da do da dey do da do da dey donneysbeck is a nob do da do da dey
spaky should be proud of his team the played some brilliant football last night and if they played like that in the league the would defineatly be chalellenging for the top 4
to sitamiky And sturridge's advisors wanted 75k a week for him lol
to wa.irvine i think your wrong, the side city played last nite r top of there league or there abouts, i still think our villa's, everton, mayb spurs would stil compete with other foreign clubs below the top 4 if they could b bothered, and remember most of the teams left in that compitition now came down from the champions league anyway.
donneysbeck the lonely t wat is back again, how sad is your life pal.
"City were unlucky"? What a load of 5hit. Hamburg should have burried the game in the 1st leg. So don't be so bloddy bitter&stupid. In reality..over the 2 legs..Hamburg scored 4. City scored 3. Therefore Hamburg deserved to progress. END OF.
