Cole Formulates Strategic Plan

Sat 17 May, 06:09 PM

Paul Cole has Royal Ascot ambitions for Strategic Mission after the 16-1 chance plundered the £45,000 totescoop6 London Gold Cup at Newbury.

Richard Quinn's mount raced three times as a juvenile and kicked off his three-year-old campaign when pushed out in the style of a horse on the upgrade to deny Midships by a length.

Well-backed 6-4 favourite Colony finished a never-nearer third.

Cole said: "He has always been a nice horse and is improving all the time.

"He will go to Ascot for the King George V Stakes over a mile and a half and I think he wants a trip.

"He has a good turn of foot and has everything you need."

Tranquil Tiger (5-1) turned the Enter The Flat totetentofollow Stakes into a procession.

Ted Durcan burst out of the stalls aboard the 5-1 chance and went on to make all, pouring it on down the home run to cross the line with 10 lengths to spare over 11-10 favourite Regal Flush.

Winning trainer Henry Cecil - who was also on the mark with two winners at Newmarket - said: "They crawled and sprinted at Newmarket last time, so I thought if they are going to mess around with the pace we would make our own running.

"He is in the Ascot Gold Cup, but I think the trip of that race (two and a half miles) will be too far for him."

Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe added: "Two miles will be as far as he wants to go, so I wouldn't say he would go for the Gold Cup."

It's A Date built on his Newmarket debut last backend to spring a 16-1 surprise for Alan King in division one of the Insead Mba 1970 Maiden Stakes.

King's assistant Noel Williams said: "It took a while for the penny to drop again this time and he will get a mile and a half if need be."

James Fanshawe and Jamie Spencer were on the mark in division two as Secret Dancer (9-1) made a striking debut.

Fanshawe said: "He has taken a while to come to hand, but has really turned the corner in the last couple of weeks.

"He is bred to get a mile and a half and we'll have some fun with him hopefully."

Holbeck Ghyll's gallant bid to make all in the totetentofollow.co.uk Handicap was thwarted by Baby Strange, who collared him in the final strides to register victory at odds of 9-1.

A recent encouraging run over the course and distance by Clifton Dancer was built upon as Ross Atkinson used his 7lb claim to good advantage and drove the 8-1 chance to a length success in the Catridge Farm Stud & Manor Farm Packers Fillies' Handicap.
