Murray Goodwin hit an unbeaten 94 as Sussex's LV County Championship Division One match with Somerset edged closer to a draw at tea on the final day.
The former Zimbabwe Test batsmen hit nine fours and helped the defending champions move to within 102 runs of Somerset's total of 557 for eight declared in their second innings.
Goodwin shared a 55-run partnership with all-rounder Michael Yardy before he was caught by Marcus Trescothick off seamer Steffan Jones having made a patient 78.
Michael Brown continued his impressive form to keep Hampshire in with an outside chance of a first Championship win of the season against Surrey at the Rose Bowl.
Set a target of 281 in 75 overs, Hampshire reached 123 for three at tea - with Brown's unbeaten 73 providing their main hope of victory.
Saqlain Mushtaq's off-spin had broken Brown's 96-run stand with Jimmy Adams trapped lbw and he then followed up with a second lbw verdict against Michael Lumb.
Hampshire have a minimum of 35 overs remaining to pull off a surprise victory with Brown and Chris Benham, who is four not out, set to continue.
In Division Two, Derbyshire's match with Glamorgan at Cardiff seems destined to end in a draw as the visitors reached 128 for four at the break.
Veteran spinner Robert Croft captured the wicket of Steve Stubbings (37) after lunch and seamer Alex Wharf removed John Sadler (28) and Dominic Telo (10) to leave the visitors in trouble at 89 for four.
But Dan Birch (24no) and Dane Freddie Klokker (18no) steadied the ship to give Derbyshire a lead of 33 runs with six wickets in hand.
Worcestershire's Stephen Moore is unbeaten on 84 as the Pears reached 158 for two at tea and moved closer to a draw against Gloucestershire at New Road.
Vikram Solanki fell six runs short of his half-century after lunch before he was caught by Matthew Gitsham off the bowling of Marcus North.
Ben Smith (21) was the other wicket to fall in the second session after he fell victim to medium-pacer William Rudge.
Veteran Graeme Hick is unbeaten on five and will resume with Moore after the interval with Worcestershire 72 runs behind Gloucestershire's 444 with eight wickets in hand.
