Yamaha Tech 3's Colin Edwards was fastest in free practice three at the French Grand Prix at Le Mans with 1:33.765 while his team-mate Briton James Toseland was ninth quickest.

Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi followed with a best lap of 1:34.114, while championship leader Dani Pedrosa's 1:34.229 on the Repsol Honda was enough for third.

Rossi's team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, second in the riders' standings, was down in 13th with 1:35.345 following his crash in practice on Friday. He was second and fourth in the first two practice sessions.

The Spanish rookie is competing despite breaking bones in both ankles in a spectacular high-side in China a fortnight ago.

Two-times World Superbike champion Toseland's showing of 1:35.107 was an improvement on the 15th he posted in earlier practice, although he is still almost one-and-a-half seconds behind the pace set by Edwards as he seeks to get to grip with their team's bike.

Former world champion Nicky Hayden again came in 12th, only managing 1:35.321 on his Repsol Honda as his woes this season continue.

Casey Stoner was fastest for Ducati Marlboro with 1:34.353.
