Stockport Country booked a date with local rivals Rochdale in the League Two play-off final after a narrow and nervy 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers at Edgeley Park.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 League Two Stockport Wycombe Liam Dickinson scores - 0

Liam Dickinson's solitary first-half strike proved enough to see Stockport through to Wembley with a 2-1 aggregate win.

They will now meet Rochdale in the Bank Holiday Monday clash after Darlington were beaten on penalties earlier in the day at Spotland.

Stockport had started well in front of their own fans, but a resurgent Wycombe came out for the second half in determined mood. Only some real backs-to-the-wall defending towards full-time prevented the visitors from nicking an equaliser and sending the match into extra-time.

Following last weekend's 1-1 draw in the first leg, Dickinson handed Stockport the early advantage in the seventh minute, winning the ball in a challenge with Wycombe defender Mike Williamson on the half-way line before racing half the length of the pitch and coolly slotting past Frank Fielding in the Wycombe goal.

It was the perfect start for the hosts but they were fortunate not to go in at half-time on level terms.

Wycombe striker Delroy Facey should have done better with a 26th minute header that he could only direct wide of the mark after a prodigious leap from Scott McGleish had laid on the chance.

And with five minutes remaining in the half, the visitors had a big penalty shout turned down - McGleish's volley clearly struck Michael Rose on the arm but referee Andy D'Urso refused to blow up.

Wycombe ended the half strongly with Tommey Doherty swivelling and volleying into Logan's arms, and they were able to carry that momentum into the second half when the Chairboys began to enjoy a far greater share of possession.

Unsurprisingly, that superiority eventually led to chances and Wycombe came close to levelling things up on a number of occasions.

Gary Holt had a header clawed away by Conrad Logan on 55 minutes before McGleish saw a header flash inches wide of the post five minutes later.

Two chances in quick succession then fell to Facey - the first he drove high and wide, the second over the bar. It seemed as though it was not to be the Chairboys' day, and so it proved when Williamson had a header cleared off the line by Gary Dicker and the referee waved play on as Leon Knight appealed for a hand ball as full-time approached.

Substitute Knight could have netted the equaliser in the final minute, but having ghosted in unmarked at the far post, he could only hit his volley over the bar.

It proved to be Wycombe's final chance as Stockport held on to keep their promotion hopes well and truly alive.
