Spanish rider Jorge Lorenzo won the French MotoGP just a year after he finished second despite riding with two broken ankles.
The 22-year-old - a two-time 250cc world champion - enjoyed a trouble free ride on his Yamaha to coast home ahead of Italian Marco Melandri on a Kawasaki while pole sitter Dani Pedrosa of Spain was third on a Honda.
Lorenzo's joy was the reverse of Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi who had a nightmare as he sought his 99th career victory but in the end trailed in in 16th position without scoring a point.
That allowed Lorenzo to take over at the top of the standings where he leads Rossi by a point as well as Australia's Casey Stoner.
"It was a crazy race," gasped Lorenzo.
"The pivotal point came when we decided to change the tyres. After that I was riding confidently and it was easy from then on."
For Melandri it was a surprising but welcome change of fortune after a dire season last year for the former 250cc world champion.
"It's been a very tough time," said the 26-year-old.
"I just came here to do my best and I knew the weather would be a factor in the race.
"It is a very, very nice day for me."
Pedrosa was relieved to have grabbed third spot.
"I am very happy to be on the podium because I stopped to change the tyres too early.
"However, I was scared on the dry tyres after racing the first lap."
Lorenzo took the lead off his compatriot Pedrosa after the first lap passing both him and Australia's former world champion Casey Stoner in an audacious manoeuvre.
Stoner was suffering the most of the contenders as he then was passed by Rossi with 26 of the 28 laps remaining and the Italian great - known affectionately as the 'Doctor' - then overtook Pedrosa.
Lorenzo - who enjoys a difficult relationship with Rossi - held a lead of just over two seconds on the Italian.
However, disaster struck for Rossi with 23 laps remaining as having just come into the pits to change bikes and go on to dry tyres he came to grief on a corner and with his bike damaged he guided it back to the pits to get on a new one.
His day went from bad to worse as he was then penalised with a ride through penalty for speeding in the pit lane in his evident haste to try and rejoin the fray.
While he was enduring his nightmare Lorenzo looked serene out in front ahead of Andrea Dovizioso - who he led by over 11 seconds with 17 laps remaining - and he could afford to come into the pits with 16 laps to go.
Dovizioso's stay in second was shortlived and it was Melandri that became the biggest threat to Lorenzo as he trailed him by four seconds with 12 laps remaining.
Lorenzo never was in trouble after that and the main excitement came at the final lap when Pedrosa passed Honda team-mate Dovizioso to take the final podium spot.

"To all of you that think this is easy why dont you go and have a try" - From lesliehayden1, on Sun 17 May 11:18PM
Maybe if you tell hubby to stop saying 'you know', 'sort of' and 'pinching pinching' he may not get criticised so much. Occasionally he does have a decent point to make but uses two or three times the number of words necessary (eg "and, ya know, here where see, ya know, sort of 'insert rider name', pinching pinching'")
On the subject of commentary, why has Julian Ryder decided to drop his T's this year? COMPETITIVE HAS TWO T's NOT ONE!!!! Almost annoying as Mr Hayden's y'know.
as everyone's said, great day for Marco! so well deserved after last season.
Kawasaki should be well pleased for him but for reasons mostly to do with money, they probably wont offer him any support this year..Congrats to Lorenzo..fast all weekend.
Rossi admitted he'd made a mistake coming in too early but it makes Champinship so open now..As a Rossi fan myself, i dont want to see anyone running away with Championship..its more interesting like this!!
BRING ON MUGELLO!!
I like Carlton - when he commentates on the Dakar (or whatever it is now called) but Hayden's brain doesn't operate his mouth fast enough to commentate on a race. Julian & Toby may have their annoying moments but they are genuinely interested & therefore passionate. It's a shame their contractual obligations take them away - it's the interesting/technical races that they are certainly the most missed.
I enjoyed the race, not for it's competitive spirit, but it tested the wet race technicalities of the sport out for sure. It just shows that in rain anyone can do anything - including Rossi but also Lorenzo and most certainly Melandri. You have to be in it, to win it.
Go Marco! Come on Kawasaki get behind this team - it;s an absolute disgrace if you don't start putting some time/money into developing what is onbviously a pretty good bike with a great rider on it. shame on you Kawasaki
Hey kaveiros75, you upset because Rossi did not want to ride for Ducatti and you had to make do with Nicky Hayden? :) lol
Great run for Melandri! I hope the Kwaki team can keep up the good work!
who the hell is carlton kirby what an idiot doesn't even understand the wet race rule but haydon should ive never heard such a lot of rubbish in all my life they should not be commentating unless the know what they are talking about EUROSPORT BRING BACK JULES AND TOBY OR YOU WILL HAVE PEOPLE TURNING YOU OFF
TOBY AND JULIAN HELPED ME LEARN A LOT. EVERY TIME SOMEONE TURNED THEM ON I WENT TO THE LIBRARY AND READ A BOOK!
THIS YEARS CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE IS BECOMING VERY EXCITING WITH SO MANY RIDERS IN CONTENTION. LET'S HOPE FOR SOME GOOD BATTLES. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO LAGUNA SECA HERE IN THE STATES AND HOPING FOR A REPEAT OF LAST YEARS ACTION AT A TRACK WHICH SEPARATES THE MEN FROM THE BOYS!
Am I alone in being delighted that Toby and Julian are gone. I know they had good technical knowledge but they were incredibly irritating

great race its time to get these muppet commentators off, they should learn the rules, bring back toby and julian or god forbid will have to watch on bbc
great race, (shame about the 2 muppets commentating) sure melandri had the biggest smile and pedrosa charged like a man who means business. rossi will be embarassed by his mistakes but he will come back like the true great he is. wide open championship which shows once again why motogp is the premier and f1 is the circus. go rossi!
alexmanning1810, so you know more about racing than Rossi? Funny, I don't recall seeing your name repeatedly in the record books.
Rossi has gotta feel pretty disappointed with himself, first falling in the manner of an amatuer, and then being so angry about it, that he sped in pitlane. Especially as he hoped to get his 99th win here, so he could make it his 100th victory in front of his home fans at Mugello later this month.
GO TOSELAND!!!!!!
and congrats 3 lorenzo
Ride of the day must go to Melandri, huge respect for Lorenzo but what about Rossi, i nearly cried. All great for the championship though should be a great season.
Congrats to Jorge but ride of the day is Melandri. I said right from the start of the season Marco can achieve a podium and a top 5 postion in the WC standings. Today he has achieved both. Despite what the commentators said, he was running 3rd when he pitted for slicks, and consistently put in the fastest laps whilst the track was drying and before Lorenzo changed from wets to slicks. It was a fantastically mature ride to consolidate his second postion, many others would likely have pushed on to try and pressure Jorge, possibly resulting in an off due to the tricky track conditions, but Marco settled down and controlled the gap between himself and 3rd admirably. I am not completely convinced the result was entirely due to the weather and race conditions, and await the next hopefully dry race with eager anticipation. I also hope the big cheeses at Kawasaki will provide ongoing support and development for the team now. Its interesting to see Kawasaki are now above Suzuki in the manufacturers table despite only running the one bike!!! Go Marco!!
Somebody tell that idiot Carlton Kirby to keep his mouth shut about earlier races during the MotoGP. Didn't have time to watch all three races today so plumped for the big guys, only to find out from big mouth who won both the 125's and 250's, what a jerk!!
CRAZY race..I knew Rossi came in too early..but wait til we get into normal races..only one proper dry race so far this season and Rossi won it, so bring the heat! and what the hell was up with Stoner with the whole slowing down on the straight? whingeing little aussie.
