Premier League - Shearer blasts Webb over 'goal'

Eurosport - Sun, 17 May 15:54:00 2009

Alan Shearer blasted referee Howard Webb after he disallowed a goal from Mark Viduka as Newcastle plunged back into the relegation zone.

2008-2009 Newcastle United Alan Shearer - 0

The Magpies were trailing 1-0 to Fulham at St James' Park when the Australia international headed home a 50th-minute Danny Guthrie corner. Referee Webb ruled out the strike for a foul on goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer by Kevin Nolan, although television replays suggested Shearer's side were desperately unfortunate.

Manager Shearer and assistant Iain Dowie confronted the official as he left the pitch, and the manager said: "We are bitterly disappointed at the disallowed goal. I have seen it and I can't see anything that's wrong with it."

He added: "Probably what has happened is the goal on Monday night from Steven Taylor has been highlighted that much this week that one or two people have thought, 'We might try to clamp down on that this weekend'.

"You are allowed to put someone in front of the goalkeeper - I am not aware that you are meant to get out of the way of him.

"I thought their player was blocking him more than Kevin Nolan was, so I am disappointed with that."

Asked if he had managed to speak to Webb, Shearer said: "Not yet, but I am going to try.

"I thought he got the big decision wrong. When he looks at it, he might think that as well."

  1. unfortunately our players are so bad we feel we have to foul the keeper so we can sneak a "foul" goal. shut up shearer, a great player but you inherited a load of c **P.

    NUFC through and through.

  2. Marge Simpson. What you know about football could probably be written on the back of ants ar$e.
Keep your stupid comments to yourself untill you know what you are talking about and even then it will be boring.
    Go away.

  3. ref's constantly decide the fate of teams. the ref also killed last weeks game between w.ham and liverpool which probably cost west ham a europa spot

I'd hate to see newcastle go down because of 1 point lost on yet another @#$% decision

on the concept of a video ref. why not? over key points in a game only yes I'm totally in favour of it. better than relying on some out of shape ref with a beer belly who can't even get in the correct position to make decisions

  4. As a TOON fan of course I'm going to say that the Ref Webb got that goal decision wrong & he knows it..BUT over a season we have been @#$% !... the games that will untimately cost us ( I cant see us getting anything at Villa ) were the home draws with Wigan & Stoke, we were leading both 2-1 going into injury time & allowed them to equalise, hence 4 points lost, where would we be now with those 4 points ? I rest my case, too many home draws has cost us dear this year

  5. Marge Simpson, you are a f**king piece of @#$%

Shearer is both a legend in England and Newcastle colours, and for you to call him a cheat is both an insult to him, and yourself. I think that everybody, whether you dont even support Newcastle, disagrees with you. He gave his all at thei great club, as a player, and now a manager, and I am sorry that he has voiced his rightful opinion about a dubious refereeing decision. It was in fact a goal, but that is beside the point. We lost and thats that. But for to call him a cheat is disgraceful. I hope that you feel ashamed, and that you are smart enough to stop embarrasing youself with these outrageous comments..

For all of you who didnt see it, this was this guys comment:

"Shearer Is a cheat allways was..He thinks hes something special.I hate his guts.hes an arrogant man.Just like Andy Gray Hes another one Id willingly Kick"

    Marge, go back to Sunderland.

  7. Yet again Howard Webb makes a terrible decison at St James Park, how I laughed, I didn't hear you mags complaining when he awarded you a penalty that never was against Sunderland or the offside goals you got against 'Boro. You are going down and I can honestly say you deserve it due to your years and years of thinking you were so much better and that you should be in the Champions League. Well your close to being in the Championship league, we will see if the 55000 fans you crow on about as being the best in the world turn up then.

  8. Newcastle are not in the relegation zone because of one bad refereeing decision - their board have made several over the season, their players have not performed to their potential and their collection of Managers have not been up to the task... No good welching about it now that they are deep in it - and Messiah II (Messiah I was another faux pas by the board) may yet wish he stuck to what he does best - armchair punditary... Looking forward to Shearer's decision if the Toon go doon.... ;)

  9. comment 42, how long would that last????????????? before it was 2, 3, 4, 5, and on and on. Yes if it was like tennis and now cricket maybe but this is football, and we all know what type of mentality exists in the game.

From Colin H, on Sun 17 May 1:42PM
  10. Colin H your wrong. They can do it like in tennis. Let allow the manager to one call per half. It would be great!

  11. All you people who go on about video evidence etc., it will never work, the game will go on for hours and constantly stop. A wrong throw in, foul etc., ALL changes the history of a game, do you want every single decision contested?, that is what will happen. In Rugby the ref only asks about the grounding of the ball for a try, even if he sees a foul of some description before he cannot call it. I suggest people get of the refs backs, there are less and less refs coming through because of abuse and attacks, so then what, no refs no game period.

  13. Howard Webbs referring is pathetic. A free penalty to the Mancs and now injustice to Newcastle. If this is going to be the standard of referring in the world cup I worry.

  16. show me an English striker better than Shearer in modern times, you can't. I didn't like the bas tard and yes he cheated etc., but again who fu cking doesn't. At least he got stuck in not like some of the ponce players about now.
