Liverpool fans might have to make their peace with a Manchester United cult hero if Rafa Benitez goes ahead with a move for Diego Forlan.
Despite never really being very good at Old Trafford, Forlan stole a piece of every United fan's heart when he was gifted two goals by Liverpool's Jerzy Dudek in 2002, an occasion commemorated by the chant: "He comes from Uruguay, he made the Scousers cry."
That match helped Forlan make the leap from dismal to mediocre, but he was let go at the start of the 2004/05 season and now plays like Gerd Muller in a blond wig.
Since leaving United, Forlan has embarked on an epic goals binge at Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, notching up seasonal Liga tallies of 25, 10, 19, 16 and 27.
His prolific form has all but erased memories of his respective goals totals at United of none, six, four and none, and Rafa Benitez is readying himself to make Forlan, who turns 30 on Tuesday, this summer's Robbie Keane.
Sebastien Bassong's lack of basic coordination earned him a red card against Fulham which might yet send Newcastle down.
Yet Alan Shearer is keen to secure the long-term services of a man who has spent the entire season getting damned with the faint praise of being 'Newcastle's best defender'.
Aston Villa are on the lookout for a new centre back following the disappointing news of Martin Laursen's retirement.
They might just have found their man in the shape of Ajax skipper Thomas Vermaelen, who will cost a whacking great £8m even though you have never heard of him.
No mention of Carlos Tevez from Gossip Shop today. Not because there is no speculation, but because he is shortly to be given his own section on this website to accommodate all the rumour, hearsay and outright lies.
Tevez is a strong frontrunner to provide the summer's most life-sapping saga, but Emmanuel Adebayor could run him close.
The mysterious 'slight groin strain' that meant the Arsenal striker did not even travel to Old Trafford on Saturday has intensified rumours he is on his way to Chelsea.
Atletico Madrid right-back Georgios Seitaridis is a very Sam Allardyce signing; he is unglamorous, he is good and he is free.
The Greek Euro 2004 winner could be joined at Blackburn by Derby's Tyrone Mears, who has been an unlikely success on loan at Marseille, while Rovers are expected to take up their £4m option to sign Gael Givet.
Wigan's Paul Scharner is a very Roy Hodgson signing. He is hard-working, he is versatile and he used to play in Scandinavia. He will cost Fulham £5m.
Stewart Downing is a very Martin O'Neill signing. He is young(ish), he is English, and he is probably not quite good enough to turn Aston Villa into a top-four outfit. Tottenham and Liverpool are also interested, with doomed Middlesbrough ready to sell to the highest bidder.
Manchester City have their eyes on everybody, as we know. Today we are focussing on Benfica duo Luisao, a centre-back and Oscar Cardozo, a striker. Benfica want £15m for the pair.
Sunderland want Slaven Bilic to be their manager. GS doesn't know how the Croatia boss will react to this news but there may be laughter.

LETS HOPE LAZY UNINTERESTED ADEBAYOR LEAVES ARSENAL
SAME! SAME! BUT DIFFERENT!
This ridiculous guessing game is just sheer fantasy. So not to be outdone here are my ridiculous guesses.
Mourinho to Man Utd as Fergies assistant. - So that they can share quality time and red wine together.
Drogba to Barcelona. - The solo artist meets the winner of the European Football team diving competition.
Messi to Man Utd - His best buddy Pique told him that he will get lots of opportunities to play; never be dropped.
Ronaldo to Real -Promise him total referee protection, two dummies,a stamping mat and no naughty step.
Robben to Arsenal- I'm quicker than Walcott and I really need to get one over Chelsea.
Adebayor to Chelsea or Man.C. - Whoever pays him the most 'dosh' and make him the 'most important thing'.
Robinho to Ac Milan - My English is poor. I now know how to spell United.
Kaka to AC Milan - After numerous attempts to prise him away all fail. He likes Italy.
Gatuso to Newcastle - The promise of European football in 2010. That and 90,000 a week.
Owen to Birmingham - The lure of working for a lady boss, just too much! I can score goals you know!
Sorry cannot think of any from Birmingham going anywhere.
Babel to Tottenham - I did not want him to go but I do not want him to play either.Benitz on substitutes.
Bentley to Stoke - Who needs a long throw merchant with me around. I did play for the under 21's you know.
Delap to Blackburn - The long ball game just got a new meaning.
Rocque to Man City - I won't play for you again. I've done everything else to leave. The money is not important.
Bridge to Chelsea - We need back up everywhere our new coach said. Also Cole is a delicate little boy.
Ballack to Bayern - As the owner I will not tolerate bad mouthing the referee. My wife is a different matter.
Ok over to you guys. I am sure you can ha
16 H...WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T WANT PLAYERS FROM SCUM...YOU ARE SCUM WITH A TEAM OF SCUM PLAYERS YOU PRATT!
clivey h.[15]has expressed all my sentiments,-boris liverpool
I remember Diego Forlan when he played for Utd, I loved him!! but I personally wouldn't think a move to Liverpool would do him any good, he has had a tremendous time in Spain, why not stay there? I think he is better off as a footballer in Spain.
I see Real Madrid capturing the signature of Carlos Tevez, or I see Man Utd paying the £25 million for him
Try buy Sergio Aguero&Tevez.
Buy Sergio Aguero. No buy Diego Forlan.
We don't need Forlan, he just isnt good enough. Villa could be a waste of money as Rafa would have to change things to accomodate him, Torres and Gerrard. Get Silva, get a left back but don't spend 20mil + on Villa as he wont be happy being a squad player. Whatever striker we get will end up being a back-up for Gerrard and Torres and will probably spend most of the time on the bench. As for Alonso, keep hold of him at all costs, he has been brilliant this season and is better than anyone we could get to replace him.
YNWA
No, we don't want no players from Scum or who have had anything to do with Scum. Rafa you need a lesson from the fans on things you shouldn't do as a Liverpool manager. Buying Scum or Ex-Scum players is a HUGE No No
I hated it when we bought Ince and when Rafa bid for that tin of beans.
Hopefully this is just media bull$hit
wot is he thinking about, dont buy forlan, keep alonso!!!!!!and get someone decent upfront to partner torres
Seitaridis come to premier League!
That's the real football, here you can show everybody how fast you are and what you can do!
To Deliver some great balls to R.Santa Crus head!
