Boos upset boss Southgate

Sun, 17 May 13:32:51 2009

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate was deeply hurt after being booed off the pitch at the Riverside after his side's slim survival hopes suffered a mortal blow with a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

John Carew cancelled out Tuncay's spectacular overhead strike and although relegation is not a mathematical certainty, Boro will only stay up if several results go their way on the final day.

Southgate, who insisted he would want to bring Boro back up, said: "It has an impact I have to say. But I think emotions run high after a game like that, mine were high and so were the emotions of the supporters.

"Whatever happens at the end of the season, I'm going to go on holiday and if we didn't stay in this league I would want to take the team back up, I'm pretty clear on that.

"But sometimes a reaction like that has a short-term impact on you - there's no question.

"I live with this hour by hour, not a day goes by when I don't wake up thinking about it and not an evening goes by without me going to bed think about it. I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt, but I'm big enough to deal with it."

  2. I can not believe Midddlesbrough fans are calling sack the manager. In my opinion we are very fortunate to have such a well balanced knowlagable person in charge. Gareths experience in football is second to none and one day i feel we may well lose him to England Look at the pluses most weeks we play with five or more players from the accadamy local lads last summer we reduced our wage bill by over five million pounds per year. All the players are active in the community we still may stay in the premiership its not impossible but if we dont we can go next year on a promotion run we have done it before so lets stop winging and start giving encouragement to Gareth and the team I have been a supporter for over 50 years and we have never had it so good

  4. Tbh no wonder crowds are so low at the Riverside and the ones who do turn up boo him, he’s got Boro into the mess that he can’t get them out of it, so what if there’s been a credit crunch, the players he’s brought in haven’t done the trick, so far he’s spent 30plus mil with little success, another manager would have been sacked already, and why give an unproven manager a 5 year deal, that is just insane on Gibson's part, Any other manager probably could have kept Boro in the Prem with the amount Southgate has had to spend and with the talent he's had, plus maybe just maybe they could have also won something. Southgate is the worse Boro premiership manager as his win percentage is 28.36% from 134 game proves that.

  5. I see most Boro fans have their rose tinted glasses on.

Southgate should be booed, yes it’s a team game but the man has no motivation skill, he has no tactical knowledge and his substations are awful, you would have thought after 3 season, he would have learnt something but it seems he hasn’t, he’s got rid of a UEFA final team and some of the best talent Boro have had for ages and bought **** or doesn't play them.

  6. weve had a miserable season, its not southgate its players like alves/king/emnes theres been no passion at all, southgate done his best under financial problems with the club, how the fans can boo him should hang they heads in shame!!lets plan for next season and get rid of the deadwood well come bouncin back up,well be a better team for it!!gibbo and southgate are the way forward so the boo boys shut it,if ya dont like we all love the boro and yes were all hurting at the moment, but thats what happens when your carrying to many useless players!!so lets sort it out for next season!so lets be a team to be proud off

  7. A boro fan for 69 years and in spite of what seems to have been a hopeless siyuation I am still a boro fan.
I still think Southgate was a great boro player but he has had enough time to put his stamp on the team and he has failed. I still believe he will eventually be a top flight manager but he needs to serve his apprenticeship elsewhere. It was a mistake to have him start a management career in the Premiership with absolutely no experience in managing any kind of team. If he stays, boro may have real difficulties in the next few seasons.

  8. the boro fans who booed need to get a life and get behind our club in this time especially i couldnt believe the people who were booing and even some fan next to me was which resulted in me asking him to stop and he reluctantly agreed lol. and to be honest after what steve gibson has done for our club over the years we have a lot to thank him for so we should be getting behind our club even if they are relegated

  9. Nice to hear some positive support for Boro'. As a travelling Villa fan I couldn't believe Boro were booed off on the last home game.
All the empty seats during the match speaks volumes, ask yourselves this stay away Boro fans.................
    Newcastle FULL
    Albion FULL
Hull I'm sure will be full for their last game
Who's let Gibson,Southgate and the team down?

From Tim, on Sun 17 May 7:52PM
  10. Not everyone was booing- We certainly werent- we clapped and cheered for our club and our team. The sad thing about yesterday was Downing's injury absence- had he stayed on the pitch there was a real chance. Of course we need changes in the close season and our manager knows that as well as anyone. One day not too far away Gareth will be a top manager - lets hope it is with us. Up THE BORO!

From GEOFFREY, on Sun 17 May 6:32PM
  11. As a supporter of "the Boro" for 59 years I can assure you am neither fairweather supporter or armchair critic but someone with genuine concern for the serious plight the club is experiencing at this present time. The financial loss in itself is enough to give the Chairman nightmares. The key for Boro is that everyone want's success including the supporters, sponsors, players and management and you have no right to criticise those who may feel that Gareth Southgate is not a person who can deliver. There is a precident in that Bryan Robson was not up to the job either. Gareth Southgates' reign of Uefa Cup to Championship in three and a half years is not good on his CV. Up the Boro, perhaps a five goal difference swing next Saturday is possible!

  12. Well done Richard you are so right. It's not Gareth's fault that the team are not good enough. The players should have done better than we have done, who could say Alves would be a flop, plenty of clubs wanted him. I think is major mistake was making Mad Dog captain. He is not the best centre back or full back at the club and we should have got a experianced keeper, but hindsight is a great thing.
How many know about the fianical restraints he worked under and how many other managers had to do that. Newcastle have spent more than us and it hasn't worked out for them thank god.
We may go down but I believe we will be better for it and come back up stronger and more determined to do well.
I just think Gareth may need some one with abit of experience with him a Bobby Robson type figure to offer advice.
    UP THE BORO

From David S, on Sun 17 May 3:59PM
  13. Well I'm backing Gareth, and cheering for the Boro through thick and thin. Fair weather 'supporters' and armchair critics should shut up and support the fantastic club and management they are lucky enough to have.
