Rangers Close In On Lafferty

Tue 17 Jun, 06:09 PM

Rangers are poised to sign Kyle Lafferty from Burnley in a deal worth in excess of £3million after agreeing terms with the Coca-Cola Championship club.

The 20-year-old Northern Ireland striker had also been interesting Celtic, however Rangers are on the brink of making Lafferty their third striker signing of the summer, after securing deals for Kenny Miller and Andrius Velicka.

They will pay an initial £3million, then a further £250,000 based on appearances.

Alan Gow, 25, will also move to Burnley as part of the deal.

The former Falkirk forward failed to make an impact at Rangers after joining last summer, and will discuss personal terms with Burnley.

Burnley manager Owen Coyle told the club's website: "We have received a very good offer from Rangers - a deal worth close to £4million when you include Alan (Gow), who has been offered to us in return as part of the package.

"Ultimately, from the fans' point of view, Kyle wanted to leave the club after saying he felt it was time to move on."

Rangers will get a striker who is a natural on the international stage if they complete the signing of Lafferty, according to the man who launched his Northern Ireland career.

And Roy Millar, an Irish FA coach who has been closely involved in Lafferty's development, believes he will continue to improve at Ibrox.

Millar first saw Lafferty play as a schoolboy and catapulted him through the age ranks before the forward made his full international debut as an 18-year-old.

The IFA director of coaching said: "After Burnley signed him he played in the under-19s and I fast-tracked him to the under-21s.

"He did very well and went to America with Lawrie Sanchez for his first cap, and he has never been left out of the full side since.

"When I first saw him, he was a big tall gangly lad with a natural smile. He always wanted to play, always wanted to come on courses and train.

"His club didn't always want him to come but he insisted he played for his country. He has a very, very good attitude.

"He has done extremely well. For a tall lad he is very mobile as well as being good in the air, so I think Rangers are getting a very good player."

  2. We were complaining about the amount of defensive signings and play. Now we sign 3 strikers and we are complaining(Gaffer can't win). Not to mention the usual jibes from the celtic morons. Im not sure if these are great signings (hate the fact we signed Miller but hes here so I will judge him soon enough) but Hateley used to set up the coisty to knock in loads of goals mojo would work hard to set up again mccoist so with miller and lafferty we have those kind that could set up boyd (who knows). Last season we had to play defensively which would not suit Boyd next season hopefully will be different which im sure Walt and Ally want too. And as too the Celtic jibes so far our signings are better than yours NANA lol
