Wenger Rules Out Kompany Move

Tue 17 Jun, 07:09 PM

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he has no plans to carry out a swoop for Hamburg defender Vincent Kompany this summer.

Wenger had been expected to strengthen his back-line as he looks to rework his side ahead of the 2008/09 term.

Centre-back Kompany, who signed for Hamburg from Anderlecht in 2006, has previously been linked with a move to Emirates Stadium, with Wenger publicly expressing his interest in the 22-year-old.

But it appears the Frenchman has had a rethink over which departments he needs to fortify during the transfer window.

"I have been interested in Vincent Kompany ever since he was 16, but I am not interested in him this year," Wenger told The Sun. "There is nobody I need for my team's defensive department.

"I still follow Kompany's progress all the time and I know him very, very well. But he will not be an Arsenal player next season - and you can print that.

"I know all the good Belgian players. Arsenal are following a number of them with great interest, although I won't name names."

  1. WENGER NEEDS TO KNOW THAT HE ALWAYS PLAYS AGAINIST 12 PLAYERS ON THE PITCH IN ENGLAND AND THEREFORE NEEDS TO HAVE A VERY STRONG BACKLINE TO FEND OFF THEATRICAL STRIKERS LIKE RONALDO.

  2. wenger should realise that arsenal needs at least four quality players to bolster the team. the idea of careful spending and wage structure should be thrown out of the window if he hopes to do well next season. the board might be tolerant this far but he might be walking on a tightrope if he fails to deliver this time around...DON ADENAIKE...LONDON

  4. Arsenal will win trophies nxt season i have no doubt about dat but wenger will only buy in two or three gud players now. He is at euro 2008 so he obviously has his eye on 1 or 2 gud players but lets hope he brings a gud few class players 2 de emirates. I want 2 see de likes of nasri and Villa nxt season as well as dat Raul Albiol as wel i heard hes gud.. @#$% on da gunners!!!!!!!!!!

  5. as one of the leading clubs in the world, we should be looking every year to strengthen all areas.some players deserve to leave (sorry Jens and Phillipe) but some players are just screaming for us to go get them. Villa for example has said the only English club he'd play for would be the gunners, and this he's said at least twice, so Mr Wenger what are you waiting for, with £52m profits last season we know you have cash available!!!!!

  6. A careful look at this report reveals 2 things: (1) Wenger Still Beleives in Building when our mates i.e. the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd et al are gunning for trophies (2) That Boss Wenger is not consistent with his words. He had previously stated that our defence costs us the Premiership title last year. How come he is saying he doesn't need any new defender(s)? In my opinion, firstly, we need to bring in a new goalkeeper to the team. Kudos to Almunia for a great job last season, but I must tell u dat Almunia is not the quality of goalkeeper that Arsenal should keep in-between d sticks as no 1. Also, we need two(2) new centre halves that can deal with aerial balls. Defenders with the quality of Martin Skrtel cos he's been a great addition to the Liverpool team. Most of the goals we let in were deal-ball situation goals. Wenger plz act, we need trophies next term! Additionally, we need two new strikers. Its not enough to tell us teeming gunners fans that we're going for this player, we're going for that player! Let's actually bring in these players. Santa Cruz is avialable. We need a left winger, a holding mildfielder in d mould of Flamini (AC Milan) and an enforcer (Where's Samir Nasri?) I think Wenger should look at these suggestions if Arsenal is to become English Champs once again next term. Gunners for Eva! Sammy from Nigeria (+2348060279976)!

  7. so the afro-gallic team can't find another foreigner to play for it....boo hoo....it would be nice to see an occasional brit playing on this completely foreign team

And which group of foreign mercenaries might you support? Also, not entirely foreign, if you bothered to look into the matter, theres a very good crop of british and Irish players coming up through the youth system at the moment, but when has reality ever got in the way of someone making a point about something they know 'nowt about!

  12. Considering Arsenal are a bunch of cheapskates compared to the other "big" clubs in England, it's impressive what he's done with this club. Having said that, he can only do so much. The board need to give him more money stat if they want to continue challenging for trophies. Just look at West Ham, they spend as much money as anyone and they're still mediocre (and that's being kind).

  13. wenger is not serious when he says "there's nobody i need for the defensive department". but then that's wenger for you. he will need never need anybody untill the whole team is on the operating table. exactly what is his ambitions for the team? maybe the gunners family should start asking. and who is he keen on?

  15. I will wait and see what the prof has up his sleeves, monsieur Wenger seems to have a reappraisal of what it takes to compete and win the English Premiership and the Champions League.Arsenal have good players, new players will bring serious competition for places and bring the best out of your players.

Injury to Sagna,Roscisky and Eduardo affected the team badly at a critical time last season and i make bold to say if Arsenal does not strenghen by at least 3 quality additions,we should simply forget the top four next season mark my words .Dotun Nigeria

  16. Arsenal do have a very good defense, provided they are all fit, and not suspended through yellow or red cards! The addition of a great defender can only strengthen the team and encourage them to play well to retain their place in the team. Arsenal also need another world class striker, to give them more options, and remove the fear of injury. Finally, if they want to win the european cup and the premiership, they will have to scrap the wage limit, to attract the best players and make us more competitive. We have a great stadium, excellent income, and a world class manager, so come on Arsenal make the money available so we can take on the very best in England and Europe, and beat them

  17. It is mild lunacy on Wengers part. From an Arsenal fans perspective we are looking at a travesty waiting to happen. Senderos needs to leave, if we can bring in some cash from that too,all the better, (all though now i sound like the lunatic!)

Have we got Nasri? Is that happening? Is it ever going to be confirmed? Cus we need him, or Ben Arfa and a stronger more accomplished Flamini type. Toures brother should do the trick.

And for heavens sake purchase David Villa! He can't do much more than score in every Euro 2008 fixture can he? Can he Arsene!?

  18. Please Arsene I really think we need new hands in our defence. I remember you telling us at the end of last season that our defence let us down. Although the defence may not be the only area needing additional personnel, I think we need competent additions in that department. Also replacements should be found now for Flamini and possibly Hleb. We also need worldclass strikers in the mould of David Villa and Benzema. Bellushi from Nigeria

  19. "There is nobody I need for my team's defensive department" Are you having a Giraffe! Is it april fool's allready? Im sorry, but if he really said that, then im afraid hes starting to lose it! We desperatley need another centre back, probably a right back too, as i believe Eboue will cost us games with his temprament, and the less said about Pascal Cygan... Sorry, i meant Phillipe Senderos the better!
