Michael Ballack's second-half free-kick earned Germany a 1-0 victory over Austria that secured their place in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals.
Germany had laboured in the first half at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, but Ballack's unstoppable 30-yard effort settled their nerves early in the second period and Austria were unable to take the few chances they managed to create in the remainder of the game.
Three-time champions Germany will face Group A winners Portugal in the quarter-finals, while the result means Austria finish in third place above Poland in Group B. In the night's other game, Poland went down 1-0 to already-qualified Croatia.
German coach Joachim Loew kept faith with striker Mario Gomez, despite an indifferent showing in the tournament so far, but his faith was severely tested after just four minutes when the Stuttgart man was guilty of an extraordinary miss.
Miroslav Klose danced past Martin Hiden inside the Austrian box before laying in a low cross, but from barely four yards out and with the goal at his mercy Gomez spooned the ball into the air and Gyorgy Garics was able to head it off the line.
Austria striker Erwin Hoffer then appeared to be brought down by Christoph Metzelder inside the German penalty area, but his decision not to appeal meant that referee Manuel Enrique Mejuto Gonzalez was not forced to make a call.
Austria grew into the game, and a period of pressure around the 20-minute mark culminated in a long-range effort from Rene Aufhauser being turned round the post by German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.
Lukas Podolski called Juergen Macho into action with a similar effort at the other end, but the most notable action of a strangely subdued first half was Gonzalez's decision to send Austria coach Josef Hickersberger and his German counterpart Loew to the stands for arguing with the fourth official.
Austria's resistance crumbled four minutes into the second half, when Andreas Ivanschitz was penalised for a foul on the marauding Philipp Lahm and Ballack stepped up to strike a thumping free-kick into the top-right corner.
Lahm and Podolski then saw long-range efforts flash wide as Germany began to lose their rigidity in the final third, before Emanuel Pogatetz produced a well-timed block to deny Klose.
Austria rallied briefly, with substitute Roman Kienast causing occasional problems for the German defence and Hoffer putting a shot on the turn wide of the left-hand upright, while Macho twice denied Klose late on as the Austrian defence began to tire.

Why are you all having ago at one another . The managers of the National teams , pick their best players that are playing well for their clubs ,if they don't perform when they are selected, then it is done to the manager to bollock them . The french did not play well tonight because they did not give the service to the front players , Gallas was like a baby again as always.Henry was on his own most of the time , he is now finish at international level. he was good in his days . I think the fianl will be between Germany and holland.
have a good day all, regards Paul.
After all this Cordoba hype and Germany s disappointing performance against Croatia plus the- I d say: justified expectations, remember Germany s performance at the World Cup and its qualification matches- it was logical that the German team was under quite a lot of pressure against Austria and yes, this MIGHT explain Germany s wobbly performance...as I said, it MIGHT, to me it doesn t...
Yes, there was a lot to loose but why was there so little confidence in the own strenghts? Germany s team fascinated me during the World Cup with its clearly offensive way to play, nice combinations, the will to take risks and last but certainly not least: its confindence in its abilities as a team of individual players becoming a unity.... and yes, to me this way to play would have been the only answer to give to all those who doubted. I m afraid, I didn t see any of this yesterday- or even the entire Euro... I m not really worried about the individual class of their players- despite a few exceptions this never has been Germany s stenght or their key to success- instead, I state a lack of team spirit and determination, the fact of working together and creating a well working ensemble which faces its challenges as an entity.
The match against Austria should have been a wake up call, a chance to show that they can do better and that they themselves believe in their strenght and abilities... I m afraid they didn t accept that challenge, instead their fear was omnipresent, hindering them to act as a real unity and play their game. Somehow, I just can t get over the feeling I had at the beginning of this Euro that something is wrong about the team s morale...
As far as Austria is concerned, they did their best in all of their matches, they ve got a very young team which has some potential- it might not have been enough for this Euro but maybe the next one.
Anyway, I still think that Germany can beat Portugal, the pressure of being eliminated might rather play into Germany s hands
Go Germany Go WE HAVENT SHOWN OUR BEST JET WE ARE GOING ALL THE WAY
FROM LEO U-S-A TUESDAY JUN 17 8;40
Hey Rosa, please call me @ 65 6 4697412 now!! I am Nathan King & I have big c o c k for you!!
Polster when are you ordering the grapejuice? Austria weren't that bad in the Euro. They did better than greece.
tke it or you leave it, german team will remain a force to reckon with in world football.
like some say most of them are africans! and arabs, i have much respect but italians are pure in this euro as of always. but germany really @#$%py, you saw how they were double teaming the austianS! i have to admit CHELSEA MONEY WORTH FOR BALLACK!
Germany did score a great goal yesterday, but the have to play a whole lot better to win against portugal
yea
Im a fanatic german fan. Honestly the german was disappointing. Who is this Gomez?. He has been a total flop and its costing germany. The coach has to put him on the bench. I have never come across a german striker like him who freaks near the goal. He cannot even tap in the ball in the open goal. As far as portugal is concerned we will beat them. This time Germans will not fire blanks they will perform.
They are all legal. And smart becuase Germany is good and Poland sucks.
"1. Any person holding the nationality of a country is eligible to play for the representative teams of the Association of his country. The Executive Committee shall decide on the conditions of eligibility for any Player whose nationality entitles him to represent more than one Association.
"2. As a general rule, any Player who has already represented one Association (either in full or in part) in an official competition of any category may not play an international match with another Association team.
"3. If a Player has more than one nationality, or if a Player acquires a new nationality, or if the Player is eligible to play for several Association teams due to his nationality
ahmed.amrothman you are talking bullshit.
Gomez: foreign father, german mother. grew up in germany. What does that make him? German of course.
Kuranyi: foreign mother, german father, grew up in germany. What does that make him? German of course.
Klose: Klose's parents belong to the german minority in Poland (the one the poles so desperatly tried to get rid of). He grew up in Germany.
Podolski: see above.
First inform yourself, then post. You are ridiculing yourself.
go germany go...really thanks god that we have a wonderful player that we could count on him in the difficult times ...i am lebanese and here in lebanon the german fans are in the second place after brasilians fans ...and everyone adore michael ballack...he have the quality of the old german players that used germany to have...(mabrouk lal oulman)and i am sure in the match against portugal we will see a better german team....but lets enjoy our win tonight as thousands of lebanese did tonight at the streets ....because at least for 12 years we did not pass the first round of the euro...
vivaaaaaaaaaa germany.....
Hello H A N S K R A N K E L, where are you now??
Germany didn't show their best match tonight.
Last updated world ranking, they are a lot higher than Austria.
They only scored 1 goal and it was from free kick!
My applause to Austria, they play good even they still have many young players (17% age 18-21, the most at Euro 2008).
I wonder if Germany can win against Portugal.
Franz Beckenbauer said they need to improve if they want to win against Portugal.
ahmed i agree with your opinion, german team after EURO 1996 it's not the same
they don't have many great player anymore... in the past germany have great player
with big personality , big leaders , now the german football level is low
and something else, the most of football player in the world goes to the nacional team
to reclame their self to win a better contract with their teams to get a better number in their contract
no matter from what corner of the world they are, the most of them are the same....
i belive this EURO gone win spain or portugal...........
TO BRAINLESS YOU ARE EXTREMLY STUPID AND CANT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH.
I DONT HATE GERMANY AND FIRST OFF ALL
1)KLOSE AND PODOLSKI SPEAK IN POLISH TOGETHER DURING TRAINING AND MATCHES.
2)MY FAVOURITE FOOTBALL CLUB IS A GERMAN CLUB (BAYERN MUNICHEN)
3)RONALDO IS PORTEGUESE,95%OF THE FRENCH TEAMS ARE ARABS AND AFRICANS.
TO AMADOR.VITOR
I AGREE WITH YOU
TO ALL THOSE WHO MISSUDERSTOOD MY COMMENT
1)I AM NOT AGAINST GIVING NATIONALITIES TO FOREIGN PLAYERS.
I MENT THAT GERMAN FOOTBALL ORGANIZATIONS SHOULD HAVE ENHANCED ALL THE THREE LINES OF THE TEAM AND NOT ONLY PAY ATTENTION TO STRIKERS.THEY SHOULD PAY MORE ATTENTION TO TALENTED GERMAN PLAYERS AND TEACH THEM ALL ABOUT FOOTBALL.THAT DOESNT MEAN THAT GERMAN FOOTBALL SCHOOLS ARE NOT GOOD,THERE ARE ALOT OF EXCELLENT SCHOOLS BUT FOOTBALL CLUBS SHOUL PAY MORE ATTENTION TO THOSE SCHOOLS AND COOEPERATE WITH THEM.
Austria lost because H A N S K R A N K E L didn't play last night!!
