The 108th US Open culminated in a dramatic play-off at Torrey Pines between Rocco Mediate and Tiger Woods, and this is how it unfolded.

PLAY-OFF HOLE ONE (SEVEN), 461 yards, par four

Off to the seventh they go, and Woods hits a fine drive down the middle of the fairway to heap on the pressure. ROCCO FINDS THE BUNKER to the left of the fairway and sends his second towards the spectator stand. Woods, meanwhile sends a nine iron soaring through the clear blue sky to within 20 feet. Mediate gets a free drop and now has a tricky chip. He surely must get down in two to stay in contention, but his chip is past the flag by some distance. WOODS HAS A PUTT TO WIN THE US OPEN....SO CLOSE!! He taps in for par and Rocco MUST SINK HIS PAR PUTT to avoid defeat. HE MISSES!! AND TIGER WOODS HAS WON THE US OPEN!! What astonishing drama.

HOLE 18, 573 yards, par five

Here we go. Woods hammers his drive front and centre and will launch one at the green with an iron. WHAT A SHOT!!! He flies the water and now has a putt for eagle. Mediate's drive is wayward, and he lays up to leave 123 yards to the flag. GREAT SHOT!! He leave 25 feet or thereabouts for birdie. The gallery around the 18th are going crazy. "TIGER TIGER TIGER" they chant, "ROCCO ROCCO ROCCO". It's Woods up first, for eagle, but he pushes it far enough past to make his birdie more than a formality. Rocco Mediate then has a putt to win the US Open....He's wide to the right!! Both putt out and WE'RE HEADING FOR SUDDEN DEATH!!

Score: Woods LEVEL / Mediate LEVEL

HOLE 17, 441 yards, par four

Woods finds the fairway and takes an age over his second shot. After considerable deliberation, he takes aim and send a LOVELY SHOT to about 20 feet. Mediate is also solid from the tee, but his second only just hangs on to the front edge - leaving a very long two putt, but he makes it. Woods now has a chance to square the match, from around 20 feet downhill. HE LEAVES IT SHORT. One hole to play and Mediate leads by a shot.

Score: Woods +1 / Mediate LEVEL

HOLE 16, 225 yards, par three

Both players come up short from the tee. Mediate putts from off the green, and gets the length spot on. He taps in for par. Woods with his birdie attempt...SO CLOSE!! Both players take par. Woods trails by a shot with two holes to play.

Score: Woods +1 / Mediate LEVEL

HOLE 15, 478 yards, par four

Tiger is yet again wayward from the tee, and finds himself in a fairway bunker on the adjoining fairway. He parts the spectators to to get a look at the green, and HITS AN UNBELIEVABLE SHOT!! Remarkable stuff from Woods, surely his best shot of the championship so far, and what timing. Mediate goes about things with less drama, finding the fairway from the tee and playing a lovely iron pin high. The hole becomes a putt out. Mediate will play first, AND HE SINKS IT!!!! GREAT PUTT!!! Woods...MISSES!!! And Rocco Mediate has a shot lead going into the final three holes.

Score: Woods +1 / Mediate LEVEL

HOLE 14, 435 yards, par four

Mediate hits a CRACKING DRIVE to within a short pitch of the green. WHAT SHOT!! And he's down for birdie to serious crank the pressure on Mr Woods. Tiger's drive is good, but his approach is not as close as he would have liked...here comes the birdie putt...WIDE!!! ALL SQUARE WITH FOUR TO PLAY!!

Score: Woods +1 / Mediate +1

HOLE 13, 614 yards, par five

Mediate with the honour and he finds the centre of the fairway. Rocco goes for the green in two, but falls just shy into the sand. Woods's drive is left, but his lie is good enough to have a go, and he does BRILLIANTLY with a five iron to the edge of the putting surface. His eagle putt is just short, and he'll have to settle for birdie. Mediate is out of the sand and SINKS A FINE PUTT FOR HIS BIRDIE. Woods remains one up.

Score: Woods +1 / Mediate +2

HOLE 12, 504 yards, par four

This play-off is far from over. Woods finds sand YET AGAIN from the tee and comes up short with his second. Mediate's drive is good, and he's on for two - with a chance of birdie, but comes up short. Woods takes aim, and his par putt slides five feet past. BOGEY FOR TIGER. What a chance now for Rocco, who takes his par to get within a shot.

Score: Woods +2 / Mediate +3

HOLE 11, 221 yards, par three

Mediate hits a good tee shot and gets down in two for a straightforward par. Tiger's iron is wayward and his pitch to the green leaves a difficult putt for par..HE MISSES and the gap is back down to two shots.

Score: Woods +1 / Mediate +3

HOLE 10, 414 yards, par four

Another poor drive from Tiger, and he's forced to pitch out sideways. His third is a beauty, but it spins so wickedness the ball finishes off the green. No matter, WOODS SINKS IT!!! Mediate hits a good one from the tee, but leaves his approach short. His third is a sloppy chip and Rocco misses his par putt to FALL THREE BEHIND!! This is ominous stuff.

Score: Woods LEVEL / Mediate +3

HOLE NINE, 612 yards, par five

Woods smites his drive well over 300 yards, but finds the bunker with his second. His escape comes up short and nestles in the thick rough, from where he pitches on for four and putts for par. Mediate takes a more standard route, but misses his par putt to drop two shots behind midway through the play-off.

Score: Woods LEVEL / Mediate +2

HOLE EIGHT, 177 yards, par three

Mediate is short from the tee, and chips to within five feet or so. Woods finds the sand, and his bunker shot goes back through the green to roll alongside Rocco's - from where he chips to six feet. Both now have similar putts - Woods for bogey, Mediate for par. IN THEY GO, and the gap returns to one shot

Score: Woods LEVEL / Mediate +1

HOLE SEVEN, 461 yards, par four

Both hit lovely drives, and Mediate plays a fine approach to set up a 35-foot birdie chance. He gets the line spot on, but it's a touch short and he takes par. Woods hits a wedge on to the green, and SINKS IT FOR BIRDIE!!! He takes a two shot lead.

Score: Woods -1 / Mediate +1

HOLE SIX, 515 yards, par four

It might be the longest par four in US Open history but that doesn't stop Woods bashing a monster of a drive and flighting a wonderful nine iron to ten feet. Mediate's drive is solid, but his second runs through the back of the green to leave a testing pitch back. He's plays it superbly, allowing for the contours of the green to channel his ball towards the pin from left to right. Woods for birdie...IN SHE GOES!! Mediate sinks his putt for a superb par, but falls one behind.

Score: Woods LEVEL / Mediate +1

HOLE FIVE, 453 yards, par four

Tiger hits a three wood from the tee, and pulls a seven iron from his bag on the fairway. LOVELY SHOT to leave himself a 20-footer for birdie. Mediate fnds the sand with his drive and sends his second INTO THE GALLERY!! His ball bounces on the cart path and settles on downtrodden ground left of the green. WHAT SHOT!! Mediate give himself a chance of par, but his putt is just shy to the left. Woods two putts to square the match.

Score: Woods +1 / Mediate +1

HOLE FOUR, 488 yards, par four

Mediate finds the rough to the left of the fairway and hits a rescue club to the front right of the green. "Who set these pins?" he says. Woods is wayward from the tee and his second comes up just shy of the bunker. WHAT A CHIP!!! He gets within a couple of feet with a touch of Tiger magic and takes a four. Mediate's putt is a little strong, and his par effort wobbles a little before dropping in. As we were.

Score: Woods +1 / Mediate LEVEL +1

HOLE THREE, 195 yards, par three

On to rattlesnake country, at the terrifying third. Woods finds the bunker to the left of the green, and his save is a touch loose. The world number one then misses his par putt and drops his first shot of the day to go one over. Rocco, meanwhile, hits AN ABSOLUTE BEAUTY from the tee and taps in for birdie to TAKE THE LEAD.

Score: Woods +1 / Mediate LEVEL

HOLE TWO, 389 yards, par four

Woods bounds to the second tee and finds the first cut of rough. He takes two to get on, and sinks a straightforward putt for par. Mediate once again FINDS THE SAND with his approach, and leaves a tricky putt for par. This time, however, he composes himself and sends it home.

Score: Woods LEVEL / Mediate +1

HOLE ONE, 448 yars, par four

The two players arrive to warm applause at the first tee, with Tiger clad in his trademark final-day red. Interestingly, Mediate is dressed in identical colours and he sends a solid drive away to find the fairway. Woods goes longer, and there's no sign of discomfort from his left knee. Rocco's second IS IN THE SAND!! He chips out well, but misses his par putt and cards an opening bogey. Tiger is on for two, and safely collects par for an early lead. Not the start 45-year-old Mediate would have wanted.
