A round-up of how Premier League players fared in the second round of matches at Euro 2008.

FOOTBALL 2008 Euro 2008 Spain Sweden-Spain Torres - 0

Sweden 1-2 Spain

Fernando Torres (pictured) was again on target for Spain, taking his chance to open the scoring with characteristic aplomb, but other than that the Liverpool striker lacked penetration and did little to trouble the Swedish back line.

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas started the game on the bench for the second straight match but was given a chance to shine when he entered the fray with just over 30 minutes remaining. Unfortunately he did little to convince coach Luis Aragones during that half an hour to make him a regular starter.

Sweden's standout Premier League player proved to be Manchester City keeper Andreas Isaksson, who looked solid in between the sticks, even after receiving what appeared to be a nasty knee to the head from David Silva. Was left with little chance for both goals.

Swedish captain Freddie Ljungberg failed to get forward on a regular basis and the West Ham midfielder struggled to keep up with the pace of the game towards the final whistle.

Meanwhile, departing Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg did not enjoy the best of games at the back and Birmingham midfielder Sebastian Larsson was quiet after his 78th minute introduction as a substitute.

Greece 0-1 Russia

The game in Salzburg featured just one player with Premier League ties - although soon-to-leave Bolton man Stelios Giannakopoulos did next to nothing of note in the ten minutes he was on the pitch as a second half substitute.

Netherlands 4-1 France

A total of 11 English top flight players featured in the game in Berne as Netherlands booked their place in the quarter-finals in quite some style.

Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt got the Oranje on their way as he finally managed to add a goal to his usual display of tireless running, heading home from close range in just the 10th minute.

Arsenal forward Robin van Persie was also on the scoresheet, netting the crucial second goal just four minutes after having been introduced as a substitute. He went on to link up well with fellow substitute and former Chelsea man Arjen Robben , giving the French defence plenty to think about on the break.

At the back, Blackburn's Andre Ooijer and Chelsea-ownedKhalid Boulahrouz continue to confound their doubters - the pair were unflappable once again although Ooijer was lucky not to have seen a penalty decision go against him when Thierry Henry's 49th minute shot struck his arm. In the end, it was a terrific block.

In goal, Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar looked solid, making decent saves to deny Florent Malouda, Sidney Govou and Franck Ribery. But the veteran could do nothing about Henry's deft finish in the 71st minute.

Aston Villa full-back Wilfred Bouma came on as a 79th minute substitute to close the game down with Netherlands leading 3-1.

Chelsea winger Florent Malouda again started for the French, despite a lacklustre display in Les Bleus' opener against Romania, but did little to justify his inclusion. He was horribly at fault for Kuyt's opener, when he took his eyes off the ball and allowed himself to be out-muscled at the near post by the Liverpool man.

Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra made his bow at the Championship but rarely got the chance to make his trademark bursts down the wing and was penned back in his own half for much of the game.

Alongside him, Arsenal defender William Gallas was exposed to the full force of the Dutch attack and had the brilliant Ruud van Nistelrooy to contend with. The Gunners captain does not like to lose though and ran his socks off, covering five kilometres in the first half alone.

Just in front of the back four, Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele looked overrun at times and was lucky to stay on the pitch after two poor challenges.

Makelele's Stamford Bridge team-mate Nicolas Anelka came on to replace Govou, but with just 15 minutes remaining, the striker had no time to make a difference and had little impact on the game.

Italy 1-1 Romania

In stark contrast to the hoardes of British-based players appearing for Netherlands and France, none featured during the stalemate in Zurich.

Austria 1-1 Poland

Austria have kept their dream alive after securing a draw against Poland thanks to Ivica Vastic's dramatic late penalty.

He couldn't help his side keep a clean sheet, but Middlesbrough 's Emanuel Pogatetz put in a shift on the left-hand side and he got forward at every opportunity. He sent in several crosses that troubled the Polish defence, though Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc was in good form.

Croatia 2-1 Germany

Croatia beat pre-tournament favourites Germany with their Premier League trio to the fore.

Portsmouth's Niko Kranjcar had some good chances as he was deployed in a more advanced role than normal, firing one shot over the bar and seeing his crisp volley saved by former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

Manchester City's versatile full-back Vedran Corluka put in the cross for that and Tottenham-bound Luka Modric also had an effort saved.

If Germany captain Michael Ballack was trying to impress his new club boss, Luiz Felipe Scolari, then he did a good job. The Chelsea midfielder did his utmost to lift his team with a gutsy performance, but just couldn't do enough to salvage a point against the impressive Croatians.

Czech Republic 1-3 Portugal

A big Roman Abramovich-shaped cloud hovered over the pick of the Group A fixtures, as no less than four Chelsea players started the match at the Stade de Geneve, and this was before the announcement of Luiz Felipe Scolari's imminent arrival at the Bridge.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech was the only Blues player on the losing side, though he was unlucky to concede the opening goal after a fine save from Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo fell into the path of Barcleona's Deco.

Ronaldo then went on to score the second with a well-taken first-time shot from the edge of the area, before putting the gloss on the result by setting substitute Ricardo Quaresma with an open goal late on.

Chelsea trio Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Jose Bosingwa lined up at the back for Portugal, and new signing Bosingwa contributed to numerous attacks down the right flank.

Reading midfielder Marek Matejovsky and striker Milan Baros - who has now returned to Lyon following his underwhelming spell at Portsmouth - both failed to make much of an impression as Portugal claimed the result that would eventually see them through as group winners.

Switzerland 1-2 Turkey

Under usual circumstances, players from foreign climes who earn their wage in Britian would be used to playing in the rain, but the Basel storm in which this match was played was too much even for them.

Still, Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes put in another decent showing, even if his side's evening ended in defeat and elimination.

Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos had a more arduous night, and he almost tripped himself up attempting a backheel late on before his defence was caught out on the break as Turkey came from behind to win.

The only representative for British club football on the Turkey side (not including Colin-Kazim Richards) was Middlesbrough's Tuncay Sanli, who caused the Swiss more problems as the rain abated and the pitch dried.
