Scottish Premier League - Mowbray confirmed at Celtic

Eurosport - Wed, 17 Jun 09:19:00 2009

Tony Mowbray has been confirmed as the new manager of Celtic, replacing Gordon Strachan who quit last month after missing out on the Scottish Premier League title.

The former West Brom manager will bring assistant Mark Venus and first-team coach Peter Grant, a former Celtic team-mate, with him to Parkhead and current Hoops coach Neil Lennon will also join the new management team.

Celtic have given Mowbray a 12-month rolling contract and the 45-year-old will meet the media at a press conference at Celtic Park on Wednesday morning.

Mowbray's appointment finally brings to an end weeks of speculation about who would succeed Gordon Strachan, who departed after failing to win his fourth Clydesdale Bank Premier League title in succession.

West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace reluctantly agreed to allow the Glasgow giants to speak to Mowbray on Saturday after Celtic agreed to pay £2 million in compensation for the former Parkhead defender.

After Mowbray agreed personal terms, and compensation had been agreed for Venus and Grant, Celtic announced on their official website that the deal had been completed although there were no details of his contract or of what role Lennon will fulfil.

Lennon, who was part of Strachan's coaching team, was promised a role at Parkhead for next season by Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell and there has been speculation that Lennon would take over as reserve team coach from Willie McStay.

Mowbray's first job will be to assess his squad ahead of the first of possibly two tricky Champions League qualifiers at the end of July.

Mowbray will need no introduction to Hoops midfielder Scott Brown, midfielder Gary Caldwell and striker Chris Killen, all of whom were under his charge when he was Hibernian boss.

However, Mowbray will have to address several areas in the side and has already been linked with numerous players including Baggies captain Paul Robinson, Nancy striker Marc-Antoine Fortune, Iceland international Hermann Hreidarsson and Sweden Under-21 skipper Mattias Bjarsmyr.

  7. #147 unfounded @#$%, Ithink you will find the Celtic boys club you reffer to was not the official boys club, also you may find that the late great Jock Stien was infact a protestant,so it would be more likely it would be every day life for your mob. to sully the mans memory so you can spout pash is disgusting,to say the least.

  8. Point 147: I think you mean "Knew" Spell this with a silent "K". Unless you are saying Big Jock was New or Celtic are a New team. However, I think it is probably just because you are a thick Hun. Other words that may confuse you include. Knackered: Barry Ferguson.. Knots: What we will tie the huns in this season... Knees: What we will go down on in Massthanking the good lord for sending Tony to bring back the championship... Notice all of these appear to begin with an "N" but actually begin with a "K" absolutely amazing....

I was just giving an opinion
Yes money makes the EPL a country mile better than the SPL
However remind me how many teams have ever won the EPL since its conception??
In my humble opinion the Spanish league is the best league in the world
for entertaining football and class players
    But its just an opinion??/

And watch how many EPL players move to La Liga this year

Listening to the Albion fans on the radio here the large majority are saying GOOD RIDDANCE and some are questioning the reasoning in Celtic's plans for having this numpty in charge

I suppose it might have something to do with it being the SPL....what with the teams being inferior and all that

    I'll get me coat !!

  18. Hey Duncan h. Don't have a go at people. The EPL has a lot more monet than the SPL FACT and so can buy bigger, better players. Chelsea almost beat Barcelona if I remember in the semi-final so don't slag someone off for an opinion.
