&bullBoss Gareth Southgate hopes he can persuade Matthew Bates, linked with West Ham, Wigan, Everton and Sunderland, to stay at Middlesbrough.

&bullVictor Valdes' agent has denied reports that talks with Barcelona over extending the goalkeeper's contract have broken down. Valdes is a reported target for Manchester United, amongst others, but Gines Carvajal told Catalan radio station Rac1: "It's complicated. There are differences, because if there weren't then we would have already renewed. Our desire is to continue negotiating."

A spokesman for the agency representing Pogatetz said: "We had talks with a Roma delegation in Carinthia last week. Roma want to wait for Emanuel to recover from his surgery. That is understandable that they donÂ't want to buy an injured player. But a deal could be done in August."

&bullAndrea Dossena's future is still up in the air, but his agent, Roberto La Florio, told Tuttomercatoweb that he would be interested in an Italian return with Juventus interested: "To date, Liverpool have yet to put him on the market. The situation has not changed. Should he come back to Italy, he would be flattered."

&bullPeter Crouch could be in line for a shock switch to German champions Wolfsburg after he was spotted at a concert in the city. "This emerges to me as an interesting option for the future of Peter Crouch," his agent Jonathan Barnett said. No doubt Pompey fans will scoff at the thought that he would leave the Best League / Country In The World (TM) for a realistic shot at silverware and Champions League football.

&bullAtletico Madrid winger Maxi Rodriguez insists he will stay despite rumoured interest from Tottenham: "We will have to see how everything goes," Rodriguez told Marca. "I still have a year with Atletico but you have to see what happens. I am very, very happy here. When I arrive for pre-season I will do want the club wants me to. I do not care about the rumours regarding my possible exit. I am confident in my position and I am going to play."

&bullTuttomercatoweb reckon that Ezequiel Garay could be in line for a move to Fiorentina after returning to Real Madrid from a successful loan spell at Racing Santander. Given Real's reluctance to buy any defenders, let alone replace the departed Fabio Cannavaro, they should really consider holding on to the Argentine centre-half.

&bullGabriel Heinze - Not cut out for a champs league squad, he's in the same boat as Silvestre now where he might be valuable off the bench or for injury cover.

&bullArjen Robben - They should keep him, he's one of few world class wide-left players in the world and they'll never get his true value from a transfer.

&bullRuud van Nistelrooy - The reason I'm a United supporter. Would love to see him back in the Prem, Tottenham seems like the destination with Pav unlikely to keep his spot.

&bullWesley Sneijder - Versatile player when he's fit, he can play for any team but I dont think Real will give him priority.

&bullKlaas-Jan Huntelaar - I think he's a keeper, kid is a young Van Basten and needs more than a season to prove his worth. Think of what he can do with proper service. Again, money's already been spent and you'll never get that back through a sale.

&bullRafael van der Vaart - Not suited for Madrid given their recent signings. I think his optimal role is behind a lone forward like it was at Hamburg. I really think Milan could use a slow build-up / creative player with the loss of Kaka. The pace in Italy would be more well-suited.

&bullRoyston Drenthe, Mahamadou Diarra, Javier Saviola are all potential stars for mid level teams. Given their recent performances I'd expect them to go for cheap to the highest bidder.

&bullXS: Some of the players on there are easily top-four class (Sneijder, Huntelaar, Van der Vaart and Saviola, possibly RVN and Heinze) and would be available for sensible fees. Other clubs lower in the table should try their luck for the likes of Diarra and Drenthe as suggested in the article, and Robben is class if he can stay fit. I think this will work against Real, as you need some grafters to balance the egos - exactly the problem they had in the last Galactico era. Look at Darren Fletcher at United, not world class yet his contribution is immense!

&bullDJ: Manchester United, with the help of Edwin van der Sar, should go after the Dutch trio Madrid wants to dump: Van der Vaart, Sneijder and Huntelaar.

&bullBarcelona are being tipped to gazump Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United for David Villa by offering £37m plus Bojan and Martin Caceres on loan. Marca also claim that United will offer £45m. Sport and El Mundo Deportivo have also claimed that Los Cules will sign either Robinho or Florent Malouda is they fail to land Ribery. Shakhtar Donetsk defenders Darijo Srna and Dmytro Chygrynskiy have also been linked with moves to the Camp Nou.

&bullGERMANY: Bayern Munich general manager Karl-Heinz Rummenigge tells Bild that Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona made bids for Franck Ribery that the club rejected, but that Real Madrid - who are publicly linking themselves with the Frenchman - have not. Typical.

&bull"We want Ribery to stay in Munich. We didn't buy him two years ago to make money from him." Rummenigge told Bild. "Real Madrid didn't specify a figure for Ribery. But Chelsea, United and Barcelona called and offered a specific amount of money."

&bullStuttgart are interested in signing Russian flop Roman Pavlyuchenko from Tottenham Hotspur. Manager Horst Heldt told Stuttgarter Nachrichten: " Pavlyuchenko is an interesting player. We have already talked about him."
