Eurosport - Wed, 17 Jun 11:35:00 2009
The day's transfer gossip as it happened, with Manchester United continuing to be linked with a raid on Valencia.
&bullAnd that just about wraps things up for today. As ever, there's plenty to discuss, so before we return in the morning, have your say on the day's proceedings on our message boards.
&bull20:00 As promised, here's more on that Kyle Naughton to Everton story - we're hearing that a £3.5m bid, rising to £5m, has been rejected by Sheffield United.
&bullBoss Gareth Southgate hopes he can persuade Matthew Bates, linked with West Ham, Wigan, Everton and Sunderland, to stay at Middlesbrough.
&bullVictor Valdes' agent has denied reports that talks with Barcelona over extending the goalkeeper's contract have broken down. Valdes is a reported target for Manchester United, amongst others, but Gines Carvajal told Catalan radio station Rac1: "It's complicated. There are differences, because if there weren't then we would have already renewed. Our desire is to continue negotiating."
&bull18:00 Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna has distanced himself from reports linking him with a move to Real Madrid - and declared he is "100 per cent committed" to the Gunners.
&bull17:30 DEAL! Fulham have signed full-back Stephen Kelly from Birmingham on a three-year deal!
&bull17:00 BREAKING NEWS! We are getting reports that Kyle Naughton is the subject of a £5m bid from Everton. The Sheffield United wingback was the stand-out player in their failed promotion bid and has been much-coveted by top-flight clubs.... More on that as we get it!
&bullBREAKING NEWS! Tony Mowbray is named Celtic manager with Neil Lennon as his assistant. Finally, after weeks of to-in and fro-ing, the former West Brom boss takes charge at Parkhead.
&bull16:00 WORD ON THE STRASSE: Emanuel Pogatetz could be in line for a surprise move from relegated Middlesbrough to Roma. A spokesman for the agency representing Pogatetz said: "We had talks with a Roma delegation in Carinthia last week. Roma want to wait for Emanuel to recover from his surgery. That is understandable that they donÂ't want to buy an injured player. But a deal could be done in August."
&bullAndrea Dossena's future is still up in the air, but his agent, Roberto La Florio, told Tuttomercatoweb that he would be interested in an Italian return with Juventus interested: "To date, Liverpool have yet to put him on the market. The situation has not changed. Should he come back to Italy, he would be flattered."
&bullPeter Crouch could be in line for a shock switch to German champions Wolfsburg after he was spotted at a concert in the city. "This emerges to me as an interesting option for the future of Peter Crouch," his agent Jonathan Barnett said. No doubt Pompey fans will scoff at the thought that he would leave the Best League / Country In The World (TM) for a realistic shot at silverware and Champions League football.
&bullAtletico Madrid winger Maxi Rodriguez insists he will stay despite rumoured interest from Tottenham: "We will have to see how everything goes," Rodriguez told Marca. "I still have a year with Atletico but you have to see what happens. I am very, very happy here. When I arrive for pre-season I will do want the club wants me to. I do not care about the rumours regarding my possible exit. I am confident in my position and I am going to play."
&bullTuttomercatoweb reckon that Ezequiel Garay could be in line for a move to Fiorentina after returning to Real Madrid from a successful loan spell at Racing Santander. Given Real's reluctance to buy any defenders, let alone replace the departed Fabio Cannavaro, they should really consider holding on to the Argentine centre-half.
&bullLe Parisien reckon French champions Bordeaux have made Toulouse goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso their number-one priority this summer.
&bullArsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue could be on his way out of the Emirates after revealing he is unhappy at the club.
&bull15:00 We asked you what you think should happen with the host of star Â- and mostly Dutch Â- players Real Madrid will offload this summer. tevez_united has written a full analysis of where these players should go and, in his opinion, which ones should stay...
&bullGabriel Heinze - Not cut out for a champs league squad, he's in the same boat as Silvestre now where he might be valuable off the bench or for injury cover.
&bullArjen Robben - They should keep him, he's one of few world class wide-left players in the world and they'll never get his true value from a transfer.
&bullRuud van Nistelrooy - The reason I'm a United supporter. Would love to see him back in the Prem, Tottenham seems like the destination with Pav unlikely to keep his spot.
&bullWesley Sneijder - Versatile player when he's fit, he can play for any team but I dont think Real will give him priority.
&bullKlaas-Jan Huntelaar - I think he's a keeper, kid is a young Van Basten and needs more than a season to prove his worth. Think of what he can do with proper service. Again, money's already been spent and you'll never get that back through a sale.
&bullRafael van der Vaart - Not suited for Madrid given their recent signings. I think his optimal role is behind a lone forward like it was at Hamburg. I really think Milan could use a slow build-up / creative player with the loss of Kaka. The pace in Italy would be more well-suited.
&bullRoyston Drenthe, Mahamadou Diarra, Javier Saviola are all potential stars for mid level teams. Given their recent performances I'd expect them to go for cheap to the highest bidder.
&bullXS: Some of the players on there are easily top-four class (Sneijder, Huntelaar, Van der Vaart and Saviola, possibly RVN and Heinze) and would be available for sensible fees. Other clubs lower in the table should try their luck for the likes of Diarra and Drenthe as suggested in the article, and Robben is class if he can stay fit. I think this will work against Real, as you need some grafters to balance the egos - exactly the problem they had in the last Galactico era. Look at Darren Fletcher at United, not world class yet his contribution is immense!
&bullDJ: Manchester United, with the help of Edwin van der Sar, should go after the Dutch trio Madrid wants to dump: Van der Vaart, Sneijder and Huntelaar.
&bullChrissiewhitburn: It would be great if Arsenal bid for Huntelaar and Sneijder
&bull15:00 Terry Neale and stanislav198 want Arjen Robben back at Stamford Bridge: Chelsea needs to bring back Robben, who is the best winger available today. Also, they should keep a close eye on Huntelaar.
&bull14:00 SAGNA IN REAL SWITCH? Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna told Aujourd'hui magazine that he would "not be against" a "surprise" move to Real Madrid but would be "happy to stay at Arsenal".
&bullThe agent of Ajax defender Thomas Vermaelen is sure he will seal a move to Arsenal.
&bullWest Ham are reportedly closing in on the signing of Inter playmaker Luis Jimenez and it could all be wrapped up later today.
&bullOrlando Pirates midfielder Teko Modise is allegedly on Aston Villa's radar, according to rumours in his native South Africa. I would give that a resounding 'no' as he clearly is not good enough for a side aiming to challenge for the Premier League top four. South Africa are notoriously good at hyping up their mediocre clubs and players while isolating their big-name stars.
&bull12:30 BREAKING NEWS: The BBC understand that Liverpool have agreed a £17m fee with Portsmouth for England right-back Glen Johnson. More to follow...
&bull12:00 RIBERY SET FOR UNITED? Real Madrid's plans to sign Franck Ribery are being scuppered by some serious hardball from the Bundesliga club, according to Real director Jorge Valdano: "They don't want to sell him and that's why they quoted us an astronomical price," he admitted. This may be because Bayern know Manchester United have a fair wad of cash to spend on a winger after they sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Madrid.
&bullArsenal agreed terms with Hapoel Tel-Aviv's Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama last week but refused to pay the £1.7m demanded for the 26-year-old, according to reports in Israel.
&bullHull boss Phil Brown has made a bid, understood to be around £2.5m, for Nancy striker Marc-Antoine Fortune, who impressed on loan at West Brom last season: "Fortune is a player we're interested in. We have discussed terms with his club and I would say we're probably one of three serious contenders. We've done our business with his club and we remain hopeful. He caught the eye and captured everyone's imagination in the second half of last season."
&bullThe Daily Mail reckon that teenage West Ham striker Freddie Sears will join Crystal Palace on loan in a bid to expose him to regular first-team football.
&bullManchester City striker Felipe Caicedo, 20, claims that West Ham are interested in signing him.
&bullAlan Shearer could be installed as Newcastle manager before a takeover is completed, according to managing director Derek Llambias.
&bull11:00 DEAL! Striker Yoshito Okubo has returned to Japan to join Vissel Kobe after only six months with Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg.
&bull10:30 Werder Bremen playmaker Mesut Oezil has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester City.
&bull10:00 ITALY: A lot of news from Italy today, so Serie A leads our FOREIGN VIEW. Fulham could be set for a cheeky swoop on Milan striker Robert Acquafresca. The 21-year-old score 14 goals on loan at Cagliari last season and told The Times: "Fulham called me, I might try to go abroad." Note to Fulham fans - he is really quite good.
&bullChelsea target Alexander Pato is happy to stay at Milan: "I do not care what they say and I have a contract with Milan that I will respect," he said after Brazil's 4-3 Confederations Cup win over Egypt. "I want to win everything with Milan."
&bullVlado Borozan, agent of Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko, has given some good news to Milan, declaring that his client is now officially on the market. "We're working all together for this negotiation to end in a good way," declared the player's agent (Gazzetta dello Sport).
&bullJuventus duo Olof Mellberg and Christian Poulsen are set to leave Juventus after a single season in Turin. It is reported that the players will relocate to Greek club Panathinaikos and Turkish side Fenerbahce respectively. David Trezeguet is also set to leave Juventus: Roma are ready to make a bid.
&bullInter have cooled their interest in Twente striker Marko Arnautovic, who was one of their main transfer objectives until a few days ago. Apparently, the Nerazzurri are hoping to get a discount from the Dutch side for the 20-year-old player, who picked up an injury in the past season.
&bullRoma are close to signing Bari midfielder Stefano Guberti on a four-year deal. Fiorentina and Juventus were also believed to be in the race for the 22-year-old, but ultimately he opted for a move to the capital.
&bullSPAIN: The entire Premier League is on standby as Real Madrid prepare to flog all their English-speaking players to fund their ridiculous spending spree. Madrid-based journo Sid Lowe says in the Guardian: "A fax has been sent from the Bernabeu that includes the names of the club's Dutch players, as well as the former Manchester United full-back Gabriel Heinze. [Arjen] Robben and [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy are joined by their compatriots Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart and Royston Drenthe. The defensive midfielder Mahamadou Diarra and the striker Javier Saviola have also been made available.
&bullLiverpool are reportedly keen on Robben, Marseille want Heinze and Spurs are close to signing Van Nistelrooy. Van der Vaart and Sneijder would frankly be great anywhere (come on Man United, sort your midfield out) while Huntelaar would be the perfect back-up to Fernando Torres at Anfield.
&bullAS claim that Franck Ribery has said he will go to "Real Madrid or nowhere". This would be newsworthy were AS and Marca not tools of propaganda for Madrid. Gael Clichy, Marcano and Alvaro Arbeloa have also been linked with moves to the Bernabeu as Florentino Perez remembers that their problem is their defence, not attack.
&bullBarcelona are being tipped to gazump Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United for David Villa by offering £37m plus Bojan and Martin Caceres on loan. Marca also claim that United will offer £45m. Sport and El Mundo Deportivo have also claimed that Los Cules will sign either Robinho or Florent Malouda is they fail to land Ribery. Shakhtar Donetsk defenders Darijo Srna and Dmytro Chygrynskiy have also been linked with moves to the Camp Nou.
&bullGERMANY: Bayern Munich general manager Karl-Heinz Rummenigge tells Bild that Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona made bids for Franck Ribery that the club rejected, but that Real Madrid - who are publicly linking themselves with the Frenchman - have not. Typical.
&bull"We want Ribery to stay in Munich. We didn't buy him two years ago to make money from him." Rummenigge told Bild. "Real Madrid didn't specify a figure for Ribery. But Chelsea, United and Barcelona called and offered a specific amount of money."
&bullStuttgart are interested in signing Russian flop Roman Pavlyuchenko from Tottenham Hotspur. Manager Horst Heldt told Stuttgarter Nachrichten: " Pavlyuchenko is an interesting player. We have already talked about him."
&bullDutch midfielder Orlando Engelaar is set to leave Schalke 04 for Panathinakos Athens after just one season in Gelsinkirchen. Schalke boss Joesef Schnusenberg: "It's not official yet but it looks very good".
&bullFRANCE: Monaco want to sign Valencia's giant Serb striker Nikola Zigic on loan according to L'Equipe, but Los Che want a permanent deal for 9m euros and the player would rather move to England.
&bullLa Provence say that Galatasaray defender Cervet Setin is close to joining Marseille but the teams are haggling over a price - L'OM want to pay 7m euros but Galatasaray want 10m.
&bullAtletico Madrid keeper Gregory Coupet is set to return to France with PSG, according to Le Parisien. The former Lyon shot-stopper is enjoying life in Spain but is not so happy with life on the bench at the Vicente Calderon.
&bullBEST OF THE REST: CSKA Moscow and Olympiacos are interested in Spain defender David Navarro, 29. Navarro is owned by Valencia but his time at the Mestalla is up and he spent last season on loan in Mallorca.
&bullCSKA Sofia have made a somewhat frightening claim to ship out all their foreign players are make their team entirely Bulgarian. Now this might please the fans, who were in hot water a few years ago for making racist chants at Djibril Cisse, but not sure what UEFA will say about this.
&bull09:00 The Mirror are having fun in speculating where the £80m Ronaldo cash will go at Old Trafford. They have mooted a £70m double-swoop for Valencia stars David Villa and David Silva, and have also made a rather speculative proposal that Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing will move to Old Trafford in exchange for ageing duo Gary Neville and Paul Scholes.
&bullSpurs £15m flop winger David Bentley is reportedly in talks with Aston Villa. "I'm in talks with Villa at the moment," Bentley told The Sun. "I really don't want to say much more. But we'll see what happens. I'm hopeful of sorting it out as soon as possible."
&bullAngry Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho wants to join Inter. "When I was injured the club should have given me more support. They should have helped me more, especially given my past four years at Chelsea. Their attitude disappointed me a little. I believe my time at Chelsea has come to an end and I'm very happy a big club like Inter are interested in me. It's a new challenge and I'd like to play in Italy."
&bullThe Sun and the Daily Mail claim that Carlo Ancelotti phoned Carlos Tevez to try and convince the Argentina striker to join him at Chelsea. "Carlos was stunned to get the call from Ancelotti but also very pleased," The Sun a source close to the player as saying "Ancelotti did a great job selling the move and Carlos was impressed."

&bullArsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas has poured cold water on reports that he wants to join Pep Guardiola at Barcelona. "My future right now is in the same place. Arsenal have already said that I'm not for sale, which fills me with pride," the 22-year-old told Radio Marca. "If some day I left Arsenal, it would not be to stay in England. As everybody knows I really want to play in the Spanish league. In England the top four teams are much better than the others and in Spain it is more even."
&bullEverton are reportedly still keen on Sporting midfielder Joao Moutinho, according to The Times. The same paper also claimed that the Portuguese club offered Moutinho as part of a swap deal for Manchester United winger Nani.
&bullThe Daily Mail claim Chris Hughton will be named interim Newcastle manager as Mike Ashley tries to force through a sale. Alan Shearer will be waiting in the wings, hoping the new owners share Toon fans' delusional view that he is somehow the man to bring the good times (and automatic promotion) back to St James' Park.
&bullA report in The Scottish Sun claims "Celtic are poised to swoop for Sweden U21 skipper Mattias Bjärsmyr from under the noses of Rangers." The 23-year-old Gothenburg defender already has two senior caps for Sweden and has also been linked to Fiorentina and Copenhagen.
&bull08:00 Hello and welcome to today's edition of the transfer ticker and boy have we got some gossip for you after what can only be described as a quiet weekend...
Comment 14 - 33 of 33
Pls United and Sir Alex just give me Ashley Young, he's the kind of player u don't neccesarily need strikers for, he just enables the whole team to score
I have heard all sort of transfer news from other clubs and some other clubs like Real Madrid have sealed about three deals or so, I'm really at loss as to which player Arsenal has bought or who it wants to buy. Please keep me updated, thanks
By the time Paris has finished with ronaldo he won't have the strenth to run around...shes too much woman for that little @#$%
&bull sort your article out now
Mike s - the trouble is alot of Newcastle fans are delusional. You're not going to bounce back after one season out of the Prem by selling you 'entire' first team squad. It ain't gonna happen if they do that - it's just nuts!. Ashley seems to be intent on doing as much damage as possible, and the guy is probably the worst owner in Premiership history - utterly clueless. I still have that image of him downing a pint at the Emirates last season....what the *&^% was he thinking??? he knew there'd be TV cameras watching him yet he still did it - what a complete idiot. To be honest i think it will be a few years before Newcastle are back in the Premiership. If they're gonna sell loads of their players then their priority should be to stay in the championship not get back in the Prem after a season. The club need to change their expectations otherwise the unthinkable could happen at the end of nxt season.
I thought CR7 was a Croydon postcode lol....nice one Ronaldo!
please city.. try to get tevez
I have to admit that tevez_united made a good point. Man United need a midfielder (Sneijder) and a winger would suit them too! Now not being able to sign Tevez would be a shame, although the fact that the money spent on him would just drop out of the market is a pity and the main reasons why he hasn't been signed has been that issue..
Huntelaar will be quit hard to sign i believe eventhough he isn't looking as a first choice competing with david villa but villa might just be too expensive and he might not go to the Barnabeu.
Man United should also pay attention not to through the money out of their windows, of course the market is going crazy looking at the price tags of the players from the first summer transfers, but it would be a shame spending it all just to get one player or two just because they are good.. For £80 millions they gotta be crazy players. No offence to Ronaldo,he surely is a good player but he isn't worth that amount of money although he will be selling shirts like Madoff was selling securities through the world but there aren't many players who sell that well. Maybe Kaka and Messi and Yoa Ming but i can't see any chinese player replacing any of the players mentionned, non offense to the middle kingdom.
Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Huntelaar should be reasonably priced in the transfer market and Rafa should really take a look at tryin to sign these players. Robben has proved himself already in the premiership, Sneijder has proved himself at international level and in La liga and the more risky Huntelaar, has obvious potential. Villa an awesome talent, no doubt, will take all Liverpools transfer kitty with the pending signing of Johnson from portsmouth but i'd rather see the money spent on Sneijder and Robben.
That's a good question. What # will Cristiano Ronaldo wear at Real Madrid? Definitely not 7. Probably #17 as that's his Portugal #.
Liverpool should get one more winger...
sneijder or robben can fill up that position. maybe can give more competition to right wing (kuyt) and left wing (riera)...its a good buy since real madrid want to liquidate these players.
van der vaat is also good...but i dont think real want to make business with liverpool since they couldnt get alonso from liverpool...
will it still be CR7 after move to Real Madrid.as the no 7 jersey is own by their team captain.. Raul.
Who is CR7??? CR7 = Cristiano Ronaldo jersey #7
David Villa would be a good addition to ManU. He's a more consistent goal scorer than Rooney or Berbatov. But I still think Benzema would be even better for ManU. If Arsenal were smart, they would pull all their French connections to try to land Benzema themselves. Then Arsenal would really compete for the EPL & CL next season.
who is CR7?
Question. Who will score/assist the goals that cr7 did ? 25 a season is a lot. If no goal scorer is found will they be in the top 4 and therefore lose tv money and then will the glazers splash out ?
Sinking Ship :-}
Oh yeah Berbatov at 38 million looks a good deal for Spurs why do so many United fans want your new CANTONA lol out the team? Good bit of business do you think Nani Anderson or Rooney will score as many goals together?
Thing that makes me laugh out loud the most, if you think the sale of Ron your best player was in the hands of Fergie WHY wasnt there plans to spend the cash before the sale?
AND whyy have you not signed up Tevez after the big public backlash at that?
Is the cash going into new players and is it worth the risk on a 50-80 million pound player personaly I hope United sign Ribery for 80 million because In basic Understandings of the game he isnt as good as Ronaldo.
Your finances have backed you into a corner, where are the big players ?
what a fukwit the writer is for saying newcastle fans are delusional. shearer is a quality manager.. he had a hell of a tough job to try and keep toon up.. i dont think anyone could have done any better. go @#$% yerself!!!
