Bates could be key - Southgate

Wed 17 Jun, 10:43 AM

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate admits Matthew Bates could be his key signing this summer.

The 22-year-old utility-man is out of contract at the end of the month, and Southgate has made his retention a priority amid interest from Wigan, West Ham and Fulham among others.

Southgate told the club's official website: "One of my priorities is trying to get Matthew to re-sign for the club. In fact, if we can convince him to stay, I would see him as a key signing.

"He`s got the right drive, mentality and attitude, the sort of qualities that I want my players to have, plus the football he played for us during the final weeks of the season was enough to make me feel he can have a real impact for us next season.

"He overcame some serious injuries and the time he has spent out of the game seems to have made him hungry to make up for lost time and do well. I have been impressed with him and I would like him to stay."

Bates is a central defender by trade but played much of his football last season in the middle of midfield after finally emerging from an injury nightmare which included three bouts of cruciate ligament surgery.

  1. For Southgate to come out with Bates will be a great signing is just typical of him.
Gormless Gareth as once again waited until the horse is nearly out of the stable door before giving praise to a good player.
Its a pity he and Lamb did'nt see his potential earlier in the year then perhaps if they had offered him a longer termed contract this would not be happening now.
Yes Bates is a very good utility player in various positions and we will miss him.
Along with the other youth players that will be leaving very shortly.
We need a proper manager,Gibson are you listening.
