Martinez making transfer plans

Wed 17 Jun, 09:11 AM

Roberto Martinez has already drawn up a list of potential targets as he begins life as Wigan's manager.

At 35, he is the youngest boss in the Premier League after moving from Swansea on a three-year deal. Chairman Dave Whelan is delighted to have Martinez, who spent six years at the club as a player, back on board.

Whelan said: "The first meeting I had with him he gave me his priority targets if he came to Wigan. We have already moved on two of them."

He added: "He thinks like I think. If you are going to do something, do it now. He has certain ideas on football and I like his ideas.

"His knowledge of football is immense. He has seen every game Wigan have played for the last two or three years. He sat down and watched them over two days."

Martinez is pleased with the talent at his disposal but fears he might lose Luis Antonio Valencia, who has been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United.

"When big clubs like United are losing Cristiano Ronaldo, what chance have we got of holding on to our players," said the Spaniard.

"I would love to keep Antonio and will try to put him off moving. If we cannot keep him and get the right valuation that will help us to fill the massive gap he has left in the squad.

"We are in touch with his advisors. But until there is an offer for him, there is not much more to say."

  2. The Swans were not brilliant under Martinez, despite almost securing a play-off place. Tactically he appeared to be a little naive with some of his substitutions and his system of playing "good football" while attractive to watch meant that the Swans seemed more concerned with passing the ball around than scoring goals. They drew 20 games - more than any club in the entire football league.

Wigan will find that he has limitations. Is he ready to be the youngest manager in the top-flight? I doubt it....
