Crewe Alexandra first-team coach Steve Holland is keen to bolster his side's defence ahead of the new League One campaign. The Railwaymen leaked 65 goals last season and avoided relegation by two points at the expense of Bournemouth, who suffered a 10-point deduction.
Holland has already brought in four new players to Gresty Road this summer, but has stressed the need to strengthen his backline.
He told the club's official website: "It would be good to do something at the back, the heart of the defence was worrying in the last game, but it is a little more complicated there.
"I think we need a significant improvement there, mentally as much as anything, or we will need to look at that, we will just have to see what the future holds.
"We are looking for 'a man' at the back. Our players now are equipped but inconsistent and making that is what is required if we are to have a better season."
