England U19s draw a blank

Thu 17 Jul, 09:30 PM

England Under-19s face a battle to make it past the group stages of the European Championships following a 0-0 draw with Italy in Jablonec.Brian Eastick's team must now beat Greece in their final group game on Sunday and hope the Czech Republic maintain an unbeaten record in Pool B by avoiding defeat against the Italians at the same time.

Eastick can certainly take heart after a much improved performance from their tame loss to the Czechs on Monday but once again failed to find a cutting edge in front of goal.

The absence of injured Manchester United man Danny Welbeck is certainly causing Eastick a problem, with Kieran Gibbs coming closest to getting a winner when he struck the bar after just 14 minutes.

Gibbs could certainly count himself unlucky, although the Arsenal man was not on his own.

Daniel Sturridge came close either side of the interval as England dominated possession, with Gibbs and much-talked-about Crystal Palace hot-shot Victor Moses also going close.

After his nightmare in the opening game, Tottenham goalkeeper David Button justified Eastick's decision to keep faith with him, making a succession of key saves even though England dominated possession.

Both sides could have won it in a last late flurry, with Italy knowing a goal would take them through.

But neither side were able to force the key breakthrough.

Even the late introduction of Scott Sinclair, who paid the price for the loss against the hosts, could not turn the contest England's way, going close in stoppage-time.

It leaves Eastick and his squad facing a nervous few days before their day of destiny with Greece, desperately looking for goals.
