World Cup qual. - Wiese asks for Germany drop

Eurosport - Mon, 17 Aug 13:07:00 2009

Germany goalkeeper Tim Wiese does not want to play against South Africa and Azerbaijan because he thinks he will get booed by fans loyal to his rivals.

Werder Bremen's Wiese (right) is competing for the international shirt with Hannover's Robert Enke and Bayer Leverkusen's Rene Adler, and Germany are due to play in their home cities.

Wiese thinks the fans at each ground will boo him if their club favourite does not start and that it would be counter-productive for him to play.

"If I play, I am going to be jeered for 90 minutes long," Wiese told Bild. "I don't want to put myself through that.

"It's not good to be German and jeered by German fans. The team would also suffer."

Wiese thinks Adler should keep goal in the friendly with South Africa in Leverkusen's BayArena on September 5, with Enke given the nod for the World Cup Group 4 qualifier against Azerbaijan four days later in the Niersachsen Stadion.

"I am going to talk to (coach) Joachim Loew about this," he added.

Germany are top of their group with 19 points in seven games, four points clear of second-placed Russia, who have a game in hand.

  8. if he can'r face his own fans, how's he going to play in places like the ex-Yugoslav nations, or South America, where the public jeers your every move? when you have a chance to show you can be a regular for a country like Germany, you need to take it.

  13. this is a suicidal decision by Wiese - already known as an inconsistent keeper, asking to be omitted at this stage in his career, especially with Neuer, Adler and Enke more realistic long-term choices, is a terrible idea. He can kiss goodbye any future hopes of being Germany no.1
