Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has a major doubt over midfielder Steed Malbranque ahead of the Premier League clash with Chelsea.
The Frenchman twisted an ankle in Saturday's 1-0 win at Bolton and is rated at 50-50 at best, while Kieran Richardson is struggling with a dead leg suffered in the same game.
Andy Reid missed the trip to the Reebok Stadium with a thigh problem, but was expected to resume training on Monday, while keeper Craig Gordon was on the bench at the weekend as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.
Summer signing Paulo da Silva is working his way back to full match fitness, while Paul McShane remains on the sidelines after knee surgery.

Cattermole and Cana were amazing in midfield against Bolt-On. Jones and Bent really plagued the defence until albrabque and Richardson had to be withdrawn. I'd love to see the Cats win, and the way they played against Chelski at SoL last season plud the team strngthening SB has done give me hope that we can push them even harder this time. I know they're probably the champions-elect, but they have to lose sooner or later. Let's hope it's sooner (as in TONIGHT!) To be honest, as long as we give them a game to remember, I'd even settle for them winning (as long as it's not like the Everton-Arsenal result. Losing to a team like the Blues isn't the end of the world, after all.

I reckon you go easy on flash, it's obvious he and R.K never got on, like perhaps he gets on with Stevie Mackem Bruce. This statement is in know way meant to reflect bad on Marty who is sensational at the minute, but we must have two top international keepers "and we have"

if Gordon was in goal we would defo loose the game, and we do have cover for the other positions. I personally do not wish to see Gordon between the sticks again wearing our shirt.
i'm very optimistic on this one, but without steed, reid and da silva still need match fitness and gordon still sidelined....i doubt we can get a result here..
BUT STILL....C'MON SUNDERLAND!!!!!
i think we will be a hard team to break down this season wit cattermole & cana protecting the back line. son that basis i fancy us to get a draw. chelsea will win te epl this season mr finks. cmon sunderland
If hes injured dont take the risk of playing him, there is cover in Tanio and or Richardson on the right with Reid on the left we also have G Leadbitter for the middle as well and cattermole or Cana will teach him.
I reckon we could sneak a result at home 2-1 s/land ,I would be happy with a draw if we cant sneak a win.
I'm with Jack on this one, the only thing we can realistically expect to gain from this game is a pie at half time. Title contenders they most certainly are!!! Although small miracles do happen and a draw would be excellent.I'll have the reciept for that now thanks.

jack.. i know what your saying but after watching hull, don't see why we cant win 1 or 2-0
that's better man,though I'd take 1-1 now
fair enough, sunderland 1-0
p.s Sean A Can you let me know the name of your dealer ? that's some serious Ganja you must be smoking man
Steed had one of the highest 'assist' rates in the whole league last season, really don't want to lose him for such a big game
we will win, safc 2
chelsea 0
pity it could be a good match if they have their strongest team
