Martinez reveals signing hopes

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is hopeful of adding Rayo Vallecano midfielder Mohamed Diame to his squad in the coming days.

The 22-year-old's move has been held up by a medical issue but Martinez is confident the player will complete his transfer to the DW Stadium in the near future.

"We are still waiting to finalise [the deal]," said the Latics boss. "We are hoping we are in the final stage of negotiations."

Former Rayo team-mate Antonio Amaya last week signed a three-year contract with the Latics and Diame's transfer was expected to be part of a double deal.

Having sold England Under-21 midfielder Lee Cattermole to Sunderland, Martinez is keen to find suitable replacements before the end of the transfer window.

Diame's arrival is not likely to be the last, however, as Martinez has another couple of targets he would like to bring in before the end of August.

"My concentration is on the players we have here but to help these players to be strong throughout the campaign I think we need another two (including Diame) or maybe three - depending on certain situations," he added.

"We have one mid-term injury with Olivier Kapo (knee) but apart from that we have a fully-fit squad which is young and can give us a little bit of cover for the first team.

"In that respect I would say until August 31 we should bring in another two or three players in to help the ones we have here."

  1. I totally agree with you guys, I suppose we have to get use to bigger clubs being a more attractive proposition.
Jason koumas is like a tiger unleashed, it is amazing how one manager like bruce saw nothing in Jason yet Martinez see's a star player.
What is interesting is that in that first match he did not play Scotland till the 90th minute.Just goes to show the depth we have already got with new signings still in the pipeline we are on fire.
Just one more thing remember when Owen chose Newcastle over us and then came to Wigan and got a got a good thrashing by Wigan that was so funny.
You saw the look of boy did I make a mistake on Owens face.

  3. Gaudrey I'm with you on that one.
I don't think Cattermole wanted to be with us anymore, and you just can't keep somebody like that.
And Koumas?? Wow, he was like a newly signed player! Rodallega looks even better than he did the end of last season, I can't wait for Wednesday!

  4. wigan are now getting more strength in depth by the minute, while i agree with you anthony cattermole would have been great for us. i canunderstand robertos problem, what it came down to it cattermoles heart and mind were definately not wanting to be a wigan player.bruce had unsettled him enough and cattermole saw his old gaffer and a bigger club than us. maybe you disagree but i would sooner let players of that mindset go and replace them.cant see bobby letting us down he is true wigan through and through.whenever have you seen koumas playing as well at wigan, best thing they did was to bring in martinez.
