Champions League - What the managers said

Eurosport - Wed, 17 Sep 13:26:00 2008

A brief look at how the managers reacted to their side's performances, with Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari unhappy despite his side's 4-0 win against Bordeaux.

2008-2009 Champions League Chelsea Luiz Felipe Scolari - 0

Chelsea 4-0 Bordeaux

Luiz Felipe Scolari: "When you play well and win it's better. Today we didn't play very well at all. We tried to attack every time without good connections ... When you play in the Champions League and you're 2-0 up at half-time you have to work harder. You need to control the game more and we didn't control it very well in the second half. I don't want three, four or five-nil - 2-0 is the same three points. We need to be in control of the game. They wanted to make more goals."

Laurent Blanc: "We knew we were playing a top side but we should have shown a bit more physical effort and commitment. It's disappointing. We battled so hard to get into this competition and we didn't seem to be aggressive enough or up for it tonight. Chelsea were better than us and we looked a bit fragile. We have to be tougher."

Marseille 1-2 Liverpool

Rafael Benitez: "The team played well and [Gerrard] played well but the team can play better and so can he. This is positive because there is room for improvement. We played good counter-attack, had quite a few clear chances and I'm satisfied with our defence as well. In a competition like this the first game is really important."

Eric Gerets: "I'm very disappointed by the result and by the fact that we squandered many chances. We showed we were not inferior to Liverpool but that was not enough to win and that's frustrating."

Roma 1-2 CFR Cluj

Luciano Spalletti: "When you don't manage to play with balance and power, things become difficult against any opponent. I'm not leaving Roma. We'll peddle harder. I have the time and the raw material to work with."

Maurizio Trombetta: "This result was unthinkable before the match, but it was absolutely deserved and I think it's right to give recognition to [predecessor Ioan] Andone's staff. I'm collecting the fruit of their work. This result gives us a big injection of confidence. We're second in the group now. It'll be difficult to stay there, but after this match we'll keep working hard."

Panathinaikos 0-2 Internazionale

Jose Mourinho: "We did enough to win, we were not lucky. I was very happy with the performance. Tonight's game was not a surprise. I saw Panathinaikos play Sparta Prague so I was expecting a tough game. The result in Bremen was very important for us. At the moment I can say that if we win the three home games in the San Siro we will qualify."

Henk Ten Cate: "[Inter] had three chances and they scored two. We had three or four chances and didn't score one. That was the story of the game."

Basle 1-2 Shakhtar Donetsk

Christian Gross: "They deserved it because they were faster and more determined. We gave them too much space and time to build up their moves. We have to improve massively in all areas but I am convinced we will learn from this game."

Mircea Lucescu: "I was a bit disappointed that we let in the goal at the end, we eased up a bit too much. We controlled the first half though and overall it was a deserved victory."

PSV Eindhoven 0-3 Atletico Madrid

Huub Stevens: "We knew that this was a tough opponent to play and conceding an early goal did not help at all. They hardly gave us any space and forced us to make mistakes and then we had no answer. But the lessons we can learn from this match is how direct they play. That is fantastic and also something I want my team to do in the future."

Javier Aguirre: "This is a fabulous result and besides the three goals my team also did some great defensive work and hardly gave away anything. We don't have to get too euphoric but my team is professional enough to realise that we also need to focus on the Primera Liga and not only the Champions League."

Barcelona 3-1 Sporting Lisbon

Pep Guardiola: "Victory in the first game is very important, although we created a lot of chances but were unable to make most of them count. I am satisfied because we have won and that always helps to bring calm to the team. But we have another game already on Sunday and we must not spend too much time thinking about today's match."

Paulo Bento: "If the match was replayed we would create more chances. Our plans for tonight didn't work, especially in midfield where we lost the ball too much. We still have the same exact objective as we had before the defeat tonight, and that is simply to win games."

Werder Bremen 0-0 Anorthosis Famagusta

Thomas Schaaf: "It's notable that we had five or six big chances, but didn't take them. Against such an opponent, I would expect us to do better and play with more energy. You have to take chances like these in Europe, but we didn't. We seem to have only one motto: prepare well, play well, fall apart well."

Temuri Ketsbaia: "We have five more very difficult matches and we want to play as well as we did today in them. We were concentrated right from the outset and were very tight defensively. I played Traianos Dellas from the start and he proved that I was right to put my faith in him by putting in a very committed display."

  15. Now Rafa should continue to inculcate to our players to forget the victory and focus on the next one with City. They should focus on winning as if they haven't got any victory yet. Super Stevie did us African Liverpools very very proud with that outclassed goal
