Blackpool came from behind to beat Newcastle 2-1 and end their unbeaten start to the Championship season at Bloomfield Road.
The Seasiders dominated the majority of the game but despite forcing Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal into a string of early saves, they fell behind to an Andy Carroll header six minutes before the break.
Brett Ormerod (pictured) deservedly levelled in first-half stoppage time when he hit home from close range and Jason Euell secured the three points for the home side, smashing in a loose ball midway through the second period.
The win sees Blackpool move up to 11th in the league, while Newcastle, who conceded their first goals since the opening day of the season, remain in third position.
United arrived at Bloomfield Road for the first time in the league since 1971 and had their first real taste of what they may expect to face in the Championship back waters this season as the hosts, aided by a boisterous home crowd, dominated the opening exchanges and created several chances.
And they could have gone ahead with their first real effort on goal as when Euell broke down the left and fed Ormerod, he fired in a fierce shot that Harper could only parry at full stretch.
The rebound fell to Hameur Bouazza, who had the easiest of tasks to tap in, but the linesman had already raised his flag.
Harper was soon again called into action when Ormerod turned provider and found David Vaughan, but the midfielder, in a great position eight yards out and unmarked, could not connect properly and scooped the ball into the grateful clutches of the busy Newcastle keeper.
The pressure continued and Harper was keeping his side in it as he made a string of fine saves, twice denying both Bouazza and Keith Southern as Blackpool searched for the vital goal their domination warranted.
Having weathered the storm, Newcastle showed their quality and took the lead in the 39th minute with their first foray into the Blackpool area.
Joey Barton whipped in a pinpoint cross for Carroll and the striker produced a fine header at the far post to beat Paul Rachubka.
The hosts were not deterred by the setback and deservedly levelled in first-half stoppage time.
Charlie Adam unleashed a fierce drive that Harper could only fend out to Ormerod and the veteran striker breached Newcastle's defence for the first time in 545 Championship minutes by tapping in the loose ball.
Ian Holloway's men continued in the same vein in the second period and finally took the lead their endeavour deserved just after the hour mark.
The Seasiders forced a corner and after a near-post flick, a mad goalmouth scramble was ended by Euell smashing the ball home.
Newcastle inevitably upped their game in search of an equaliser and spurned three great chances to grab a point.
Kevin Nolan headed wide, Geremi fluffed his shot from a good position and Stephen Crainey cleared off the line as the hosts held out for a worthy win.

We certainly deserved to lose last night. I never thought I would say it but we really missed Smith. In every game so far we have controlled long periods of the game in midfield but last night we were over run at times. We also have the problem that we have a lot of decent midfield players but most of them want to play in the centre. We need Jonas back quick but I haven't heard anything about how long he's out for. Hughton is doing a great job but looking back was it worth bringing Shola and Guttierez on to beat Huddersfield in the Carling Cup, only to lose them both for vital games?
john.connolly01. 47. I totally agree with all your points. Was the Palace game live on T V? I don't think so. Did we win? We sure did !
JojO, I've got to admit, I don’t know much about him but with Coloccini and Steve Taylor our only first team centre backs, even if he's average he's going to be a big help.
As for only winning in front of the camera; well that's us promoted for sure.
Give credit to Blackpool. I heard they deserved their victory. I sense that Newcastle collectively took their foot off the gas here. They probably thought that, given our results so far, thing's were going to be a doddle. I knew this game would be difficult. I said as much on Tuesday night. Let's just hope that the club responds positively against Plymouth and we get the result we need to get us back up and running. If somebody had offered us the start to the season we've had, we'd have taken it. So not all's lost. ASHLEY. SHOW SOME RESPECT AND SIGN SOME DECENT PLAYERS ON LOAN. WHAT A CHUMP
ting tong Com 43. Have you considered visiting Switzerland? There's a little place there called Dignitas. We'd love you to go you moron.
Here, is there a case for saying that the Toon will only perform in front of the cameras? Makeup, lights, camera, ACTION...buy Hughton a clapperboard, I would...
For all that, one swallow don't make a summer and they had to lose sometime....Plymouth will be easier, I think.
Who's this Georgian then?
jack I never really expected to win every game and over a season, even the best of them lose against the unexpected.
That's no disrespect to Blackpool though who were pumped up for the game and enjoyed their night.
sack the board sack the board sack the board sack the board sack the board sack the board sack the board sack the board sack the board sack the board sack the board sack the board!!!!!!! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !!!!!!
blackpool!!!!! i used to go there to puke
That would do me jack but if we get many more injuries i fear it'll be game over, plus i dont think fatties finished his demolition job yet. This will be a very long season for us matey
it's typical isn't it Mags play great all season beating the best teams in the league then come unstuck against Blackpool, couldn't make it up.We had days like that in the Championship, but quality will out, prediction . . Mag's get promoted in the play offs
LOL. WE ARE BACK ON THE GLORY TRAIL? WE ARE GONIG STRAIGHT BACK UP? WE ARE GREAT AGAIN?
TRUST ME....WE ARE STILL IN A MESS. WE SHOULDNT LOOSE A SINGLE GAME IN THIS LEAGUE IF WE ARE ALL THAT. THE MANAGEMENT IS A MESS, THE TEAM WAS ON A RUN THATS ALL. WE HAVENT PLAYED ANYONE AND WE WONT IN THIS LEAGUE EITHER.
BLACKPOOL? PMSL. WHAT A LAUGH.
Have to say well done to the seasiders.
We weren't really in the game all night, at 1 nill up it wasn't a true reflection of how the game was going.
Great noise from the home support created a great athmosphere, but definitely not a great performance by the Toon.
So hats off to 'pool and best of luck for the rest of the season.
As for the Toon, time to start another run of 5 games without conceeding I recon.
A bit of a reality check can often work wonders and last night was certainly one of those.
Winning can easily bring complacency, but there is no place on the pitch to be complacent, time to refocus and get back in to winning ways.
I was there last night, bloody brilliant performance from the pool, Ian Holloways tangerine army!
comment 32 & 33
YEs you are asreholes because where was your 'banter' when we winning 5 games in a row without conceding a goal. You were NOWHERE to be soon, you come on here with your 'banter' when we lose . . . . . all the predictable asreholes have contributed too.
'Banter' is NOT what you have just posted, and THAT is why YOU are an asrehole and pathetic!
Once again, well played Blackpool and good luck for the rest of the season.
Cameron W you really are a clown........you probably should be in panto !!!
well done blackpool!!!
PATHETIC!!! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha!
hahahaha! tony k , its costing you a fortune!!! cameron! well we would be arseholes wouldnt we! anyone giving their point of views are arseholes. what happend to its just banter? @#$%!!!
good game.shame we lots but it goes 2 show mike ashley if he cared he would have got some players in to strenthen the squad a bit.u can see whats going to happen 6 months time due to injurys we will be fielding the bloody cleaners (no offensive)
never mind... if there's one team i dont mind losing to its blackpool. they're my second team because whenever they're playing at home when we're there, we go to support them.
i still think we have got enough strength to get promoted though.
well done the seasiders!
