Del Potro eyes number one ranking

Eurosport - Thu, 17 Sep 10:21:00 2009

Newly-crowned US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro said he had set his sights on becoming world number one and winning the Masters Cup after being given a hero's welcome home to Argentina.

TENNIS 2009 del Potro - 0

Del Potro, who turns 21 next Wednesday, upset world number one Roger Federer in five sets to lift his maiden Grand Slam trophy at Flushing Meadows on Monday.

"It was a dream I had from (when I was) very little, to win the US Open, my favourite tournament," the Argentine, who beat number two Rafael Nadal in straight sets in their semi-final the day before, said in Buenos Aires.

Del Potro said although it was hard to think of his next steps amid the euphoria and adulation of his momentous victory, becoming world number one was his dream and the end-of-season Masters tournament in London his next target.

"The Masters can be my next objective and it's good that I've already qualified and don't have to be making calculations in my next tournaments," the world number five said.

"I'm just starting out but my new dream is to be world number one," added del Potro, who was met by hundreds of fans jostling for an autograph or at least a glimpse of the champion at Ezeiza international airport on his arrival from New York.

Del Potro, anxious to get to his home town of Tandil 350 km south of Buenos Aires to celebrate with family and friends, said he was proud to be able to compete as an equal with the world's best but had some way to go to catch up.

"Roger is still a cut above the rest and (number three Andy) Murray is having a great year. I'm trying to close the gap."

Del Potro, who was due to be paraded through the streets of the small town of Tandil on a fire engine later on Wednesday, said he had been amazed at the reaction of fans in New York and Buenos Aires to his victory.

"The recognition was what astonished me most of all," he said, adding that when he left his hotel surrounded by bodyguards he "felt like a Hollywood star".

He said the support he received on the Arthur Ashe court during the final was fantastic.

"That's why I say I can't allow myself not to give of my best (in matches)."

Del Potro, who followed Guillermo Vilas and Gabriela Sabatini as Argentine US Open champions, also publicly thanked his coach Franco Davin, who was compatriot Gaston Gaudio's trainer when he won the French Open in 2004.

  1. Del Po, please stay in line and wait for your turn :-)
i Love to see him playing, I think he is a good guy.. got many sympathies from whole world.. he played some unbelievable match, only possible way to beat this summer phenomenal Federer..
but you must be consistent in order to advance.. it is hard way to the top. I think Del Po will play more and more this phenomenal matches, but still not experienced enough to beat top guys regularly in order to advance on the list..

  2. Hi Yianni , i agree with you that Federer is a pure talent like noone else, though im a nadal's fun.
But Del Potro is improving his game very fast and sooner or later will be be very closed to federer
As for Nadal ,who knows .I Hope to be healthy but Im afraid his Knees will not be ok.
It means that he has to protect them and not give 100% of his power and speed
The other main pretenders (Djokovic,Murray) are not improving any more and they dont have many chances for No1 spot. We ll see in the future if im right or not

  4. Del Potro is definitely a huge threat on hard court. He is certainly next in line after Fed in that dept. Given his very fast improvements (Grand slam after 14 attempts vs 18 for RF), if he improves on other surfaces he has a very good chance of making it to number one pretty soon. Grass will probably be his hardest hurdle.
Overall tennis is becoming very exciting!!! Can't wait for the London Masters.

  5. To 59 charles o : too early to predict tht..u r forgetting that he beat nadal and federer back to back in the US open (though federer is not at his peak but still). Yes, he won't win 15 slams but he cud definitely be more or less in the same class of nadal atleast and may be RF. I hope tht he doesn't stop at one or just a couple of GS titles like roddick and hewitt.

  6. No disrespect to del potro but i think that was just a slam wonder, he is not in the class of federer & nadal them two have proven they are best. del potro is just gonnna fall in class of the likes of people live djkovic, roddick,& few some one slam wonder player out there.

  7. pihhhhh i can't and i don't want belive that "del potro" is so ambicioz, because the Roger Federer win in mostly match between Del potro and Roger Federer and i think that Del Potro will not be in 1st place In ATP.

  10. Good pick there Coolworld. The Masters Cup clash between Fed and Murray was a fantastic match with incredible shotmaking. Pretty logical that Del Potro after his brilliant victory at Flushing Meadows would be looking to reach the pinnacle of tennis. And it's nice to see that lack of ambition doesn't seem to be a problem for him. Should he be thinking of maintaining his position in the top ten? Not in my opinion. He should be looking to knock Fed, Rafa, Murray, Djoko and Co. into a cocked hat. That's why God put him on the planet. Whether he can do it or not is another story but if he were to set his sights any lower, it'd be very disappointing.

  11. Hi Dimitri, you mean I guessed your age right? It was a fluke, what I meant was that 28years and 2 months is not 29 in any way! Otherwise I didn't say there is anything wrong about your opinion, though I disagree that Federer at 28 is old in any physical way. He's physically very close to the peak and the way he plays tennis is not physical anyway, just look at his arms, they're thinner than everyone else's! But he's the Grand Master of tennis. Just watch his shots in slow motion, wow...

  12. Are all Nadal fans going to start support Del Potro instead ? Muscle for muscle, pound for pound, the argentine rules. If only he had the skill of Federer he would be entertaining.

From Morituri, on Thu 17 Sep 9:54PM
  13. He shouldn't get too ahead of himself, Djokovic won the AO a year ago, and went on to win some more titles, but never really pushed for the top spot. Just because he has a slam doesn't mean an automatic rise, and its still too early to be thinking about the top spot imo.

  14. Hey coolword - maybe now u might understand from my posts on here today that a lot of what I've said on previous days are only for those who understand parody.....Chris Morris (the legend that parodies Media scare/drama tactics) doesn't bother posting on these forums so sometimes I feel the need to try and emulate his work .

  15. I remember someone said at the artice: Federer: I missed chances, after that he said, I've got to give him all the credit because it's not easy thing to do, especially coming out against someone like me with so much experience.
He said that Federer was too arrogant to say that he has that much experience, but if you think, he already gives all his credit, its a double compliment to DelPo because he beaten someone with that much experience is something he can be proud off isn't?? Who thinks Federer is arrogant to say this, and btw he would be invited to any press to talk about the game or so, so he has the right to speak to the press when they asked.

  16. Hi everyone, miss the fun and the action, this is maybe the worst period of the year, almost not tennis to look forward to and we're keen to pick up fights from whatever idiot or genius have to say about things yet to come or maybe never to pass.
Comment 20ish,Corneilius is right, that was clever, ouch, where is the world comming to having to agree with you Corneilius, lol.
Pjcogs, too few and far between you Dream Teacher of mine.
Let the guy say it,and hope he does strive for it,it's good for tennis, and promises of more and better isn't something we should be scared of i believe.
I miss the Nadal of last year,i miss the djok we had until he won that AOS,and i even miss The JDT,would you believe ? ( Jaw Dropping Talent, newbies )
But further more,i miss my cool headed and relaxed Federer,if he ever was, hard to tell with him,up until the end of his Soderling match,he truly was on top of things,he could barely serve after that against Nole, and i thought bad day,no problem, but it went on against a super cool opponent whom you have a real hard time getting rid of even in possession of all your weapons.
hope all 8 are fully fit and we're treated to the matches of the century at the Masters's Final, lats year's best match at that Final was Federer / Murray by the way, hope everyone agree

  17. Yianni you are correct about my age but what is wrong with my opinion?

From Dimitris, on Thu 17 Sep 7:34PM
  18. Don't worry, the mentions in this article of what DelPo says, is just a fragment of what he said originally. People like Simon Reed are keen on cutting out the more uninteresting parts in order to build the story that fits them. This should be an initial lesson to DelPo (and others), a lesson that nobody quite understands to learn, which is to not saying too much nor too little and what is to be said and what is not to be said. Tough decisions for somebody who just wants to play tennis and win. There are lots of examples of victims for reporters, read the weekly news about Murray, Federer and the other top tenners, not to mention other sportsmen and above all the movie stars... If you want to be fooled, there's somebody there to do it. DelPo is a good guy, of course he wants to progress, but that's not all...

  19. And furthermore even the sorries on TV play mess with the truth by editing what they show and leaving out what they think might reduce from the drama of a situation. If you watch '' The Day Today '' or '' Brass Eye '' you might understand how easily this is done. These programs along with being extremely funny show how the Media can manipulate and dramatize any situation.Watch & learn.
