FA Cup - FA forced to search for Cup sponsor

Eurosport - Thu, 17 Sep 12:07:00 2009

The FA has confirmed energy giant E.ON will not be renewing its sponsorship deal with the FA Cup at the end of this season.

FOOTBALL; The FA Cup trophy - 0

E.ON's four-year deal was understood to be worth £32 million to the FA and a search will now begin for a new sponsor for the tournament.

"The FA can confirm that E.ON's sponsorship of the FA Cup will come to a close at the end of the current 2009/10 season," an FA spokesman said.

"The FA would like to thank E.ON for its investment into and support of the competition to date. We now look forward to taking the FA Cup sponsorship opportunity to the open market for the 2010/14 period."

E.ON said changes to its UK sponsorship strategy meant it was not pursuing a renewal of the FA Cup deal.

FA chiefs are confident that the market value of the competition remains high and that they will attract an equal or bigger deal for the next four-year cycle.

The FA has still to agree a deal for the TV rights for the FA Cup made available by the collapse of Setanta which has left the organisation facing a £70m shortfall.

  1. comment 1 obviously a manure fan, getting tired of the anti city sh** that constantly crops up on all message boards on here, jealousy is really not fashoinable and maybe u should concentrate on the state of your own clubs, if u gave them as much supporter time as you spend slagging city off then each ¨big club¨´would have hundreds of thousands of fans every week. pathetic jealousy, u never know, we could buy a few clubs, there is a massive shortage of ncp car parks in the uk. very rich, very happy city fan, citd!!!!!!!

  3. Maybe Manchester City could sponsor it. They have money to waste as proven with the Lescott deal and will probably give 100 million for it. That way they will also get their name on a trophy at last.
