Spurs Want New Defoe Deal

Wed 17 Oct, 09:10 PM

Spurs chief Daniel Levy has confirmed that Spurs want Jermain Defoe to extend his contract.

The England striker's current White Hart Lane deal expires at the end of the season.

And Spurs want to avoid losing him for nothing, as happened when Sol Campbell left for bitter rivals Arsenal in the summer of 2001.

As the club announced record pre-tax profits of £27.7million on Wednesday, Levy said: "We very much hope Jermain Defoe will also extend his contract with the club.

"We have progressively introduced an increased element of performance-related remuneration into player contracts designed to reward success."

Defoe has found starting opportunities limited this season, with Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane apparently first-choice for boss Martin Jol.
