England captain John Terry is almost certainly out of Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia after locking his knee in training, an FA spokesman has confirmed.
The Chelsea defender missed England's 3-0 win over Estonia on Saturday with a knee injury sustained in training last week, but had appeared to have recovered in time for the trip to Moscow.
England manager Steve McClaren said: "John Terry is almost certainly ruled out of tomorrow's match. His knee locked towards the end of training and he could not complete the session."
Earlier Terry had announced his fitness for the fixture, although he admitted he would need to undergo a minor operation at some stage in the near future.
He said: "I am fully fit but I will have to have an operation in the near future to remove a bit of floating bone."
Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell looks set to keep his place alongside Rio Ferdinand in the centre of the England defence, winning his 71st cap in the process.
Completing England's back line, Micah Richards is certain to start at right-back, while Jolean Lescott (pictured, with Terry and Ferdinand) is believed to be set for his second England cap on the left.
The Everton defender replaced the injured Ashley Cole at Wembley last weekend and England boss Steve McClaren is reportedly willing to hand the 25-year-old another chance to impress.
Should McClaren opt for more experience however, Lescott's club team-mate Phil Neville is standing by for the game which could secure England's place in next summer's finals in Austria and Switzerland.
Looking ahead to the clash at the Luzhniki Stadium, McClaren added: "We expect them to come storming at us for the first 20 minutes or so and we are determined to defend it right and to keep a clean sheet.
"It will be a very big test for everybody but I am confident we have the players to go out and complete the job."
