Former world number one Amélie Mauresmo battled to a 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory over Greek Eleni Daniilidou in her first-round match to earn only her second win since July.
The Frenchwoman, who did not compete in a single tournament between July's Wimbledon and last month's Beijing Open, had lost in the first round of her last two events in Stuttgart and Moscow.
Her only other win since July's Fed Cup victory over Mara Santangelo came against unheralded Romanian Iona Raluca Olaru in the second round at Beijing.
Mauresmo was able to overcome the Greek qualifier in just over two hours despite looking frail during the second set, surrendering eight straight points and a break at one point.
Mauresmo proved too strong for Daniilidou in the third set, however, easily grabbing a 5-2 lead before capitalising on her next service game to set up a second-round duel with Ukrainian Alyona Bondarenko, who beat Swiss wild card Timea Bacsinszky 1-6 6-3 6-3 on Monday.
Bondarenko's younger sister Katerina won through on Tuesday beating Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-2 6-2.
The woman who replaced Mauresmo as French number one earlier in the week, Marion Bartoli, was also made to fight to reach the second round overcoming China's Shuai Peng 6-7 (4) 6-0 6-1.
The Wimbledon finalist will next face the Netherlands' Michaella Krajicek, who beat Indian Sania Mirza on Monday to reach the second round.
Slovakian Daniela Hanutchova needed two tie breaks to overcome Dinara Safina and make it through to round two.
Vera Zvonereva came back from a set down to beat Italian Karin Knapp 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, while Pole Agnieszka Radwanska beat Shahar Peer 6-4 6-3.
Patty Schnyder received a bye through to the second round after her opponent, Serena Williams, withdrew through injury in the second set.
