Champions League - Atletico ban lifted - for now

Eurosport - Fri, 17 Oct 10:09:00 2008

UEFA have temporarily lifted Atletico Madrid's two-match home stadium ban for the Champions League match against Liverpool.

FOOTBALL 2008 Atletico Madrid Stadion Vicente Calderon - 0

UEFA had punished the Spanish team after crowd problems marred their match Olympique Marseille at the Vicente Calderon on October 1. The club appealed the decision.

"It should be emphasised that suspension of the sanctions does not mean that the decision of the Control and Disciplinary Body has been set aside," said a UEFA statement.

"The decision remains in force pending a full hearing of the appeal which will now take place on October 31 at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland."

The Spanish club said on its website "UEFA's appeals committee, after their meeting on October 16, have agreed to temporarily suspend the punishment as requested by Atletico Madrid.

"As a result the Champions League match scheduled for October 22 against Liverpool will be played in the Vicente Calderon, and Atletico coach Javier Aguirre will be able to take his place on the bench."

Liverpool, who were upset with the timing of UEFA's ban given that many of their fans had already made travel arrangements, reacted favourably to the announcement.

"We're delighted at the decision because it means our fans can travel to the game as previously planned without additional expense or inconvenience," the Premier League club's chief executive Rick Parry told Liverpool's website.

"Liverpool are grateful for the help the FA have provided and pleased UEFA have listened to and acted on the arguments we put forward this week."

UEFA had ordered Atletico Madrid to play their next two Champions League home matches at least 300 km from the Spanish capital following the problems against Marseille.

It added the punishment could be extended to a third home match should there be further trouble at the Vicente Calderon within a five-year probationary period.

Atletico were also fined 150,000 euros and Aguirre was banned from carrying out his functions for their next two Champions League fixtures in Group D.

  1. How can anyone write Liverpool off in the champions league we have achieved more in it in the last 5 years than the 10 - 15 Arsenal and Man Utd have played in it enough said

  2. It is a punishment for Athletico fans not Liverpool fans so if UEFA had made a decision faster it would not have been a problem.

  3. for god's sake Fred M of course it is going to be unfair on us supporters.
Think of those who spend all that money to book flights and hotels in Madrid and almost have to sort it out in a limited amount of time after getting the run around for days.
Just don't be jealous of those who are so loyal- those who see their team wherever and at any time despite the costs!!!!!!

  4. Liverpool are so narrow minded..they just think about themselves!! complaining to the uefa about how unfair it was for their supporters. Come on guys,in life there's greater things than football. I just hope they won't receive the same treatment as the other teams such as Bolton or Marseille's supporters received when they went to Calderon so they will understand that money is not the issue here!!!!! Just get a freaking refund or simply boycott Madrid, this team don't deserve to play in Europe!

  5. "In all fairness, either sides are not going to win the competition and with the punishment already imposed, so who cares. Let them play behind closed doors."
    ...
Another village idiot Utd fan who thinks they have the right to win everything.... Really gets boring, Utd will win nothing this season, keep this post for May and prove me wrong...

  6. Quite what this has got to do with Liverpool fans behaviour I am confused. This discussion has veered off into some historical banter about Heysal and Hillsborough. Just waiting for some idiot to respond alledging allegencies to Liverpool, with "Whose that lying on the runway..." All those engaging in this are trading ignorance and disrespect to genuine Liverpool and Man Utd fans, and hiding behind computor profiles which is a tad cowardly dont you think? "Justice for the 96"

  9. colintprof, words fail me........or should I say stop me from what I really feel like saying to you. How narrow minded can you be to think that Liverpool fans have soooo much say to change UEFA's mind. With regards to Hysel I think you need to start looking at the facts and not shooting your mouth off. Most of the fans are just ordinary working people and yes even going an extra 150 miles could prove difficult to some people. If UEFA showed some bottle then they should ban the home fans from attending (not that for 1 second could I see that happening). Let's see what happens when we play there, if there is a repeat performance then UEFA have to do something, because if it were an English club we'd be thrown out.

  10. Before you drunken idiots start pointing the finger at Liverpool - I was responsible with other for escorting Liverpool when the played Olympicos in Greece. There were several drunken members of their supporters (with Scottish accent and names) who we evicted from the 5 coaches enroute to the stadium. We arranged for a paddywagon to follow the coaches and these louts never saw the game. It is up to the local travel agent supplying transport and the police to coordinate in every country and they have the obligation to weed out trouble makers BEFORE the game and before they are allowed in. We did the same with Arsenal supporters - it was worse, more dangerous and very upsetting. out of 300 we had 60 escorted out to the police prior the match

  11. colintprof. you are so right.
these scouse fans are the biggest hypocrytes known to mankind.
they bang on about history but have some of the worst moments of history attatched to their fans.

  12. Agree with UEFA finally clamping down on racism, instead of posturing and lip service. Also agree that given the appeal, UEFA are right to suspend judgement till after appeal is heard.

  13. Colintprof, talk sense will you, in the current economic climate are you so well off you can pay for all the fans extra journeys and accomodation?? If not, keep you bloody stupid mouth shut and stop knocking LFC, at least they can see this from the fans point if view, unlike yourself!

  14. Worst than the decision UEFA took is to back out from it

From Half A Brain, on Thu 16 Oct 9:28PM
  15. This is a fact:
the first sign of ANY English club's supporters stepping out of line will see all English clubs banned from competing in Europe. UEFA are desperate to find a way of stopping the English domination of the Champions' League; trust me, they are waiting patiently!

From cameron w, on Thu 16 Oct 9:10PM
  16. typical of UEFA, fine a club from a major nation for crowd trouble but then let them off the hook by allowing games to be played, wouldn't be like that if it was Rangers or Celtic, Rangers were fined by UEFA in 2005 for offensive chanting in Villareal only after the governing body appealed their own decision, arseholes.

  20. Do you really believe all you see on the news??? Please take a look at the video where OM supporters began throwing the Stadium chairs and bottles to the stewadars and to the policy, and then tell me if Spanish police overreacted. Even OM players have said that they did no hear any racist songs. It is a nonsense decission, or not. OM french club, UEFA chairman french guy, who knows. I´m not an Atletico supporter but I know that they are one of the most clean supporters I know. And if you do not want to play at Bernabeu stadium against the European Champion is your problem not ours.
