Valentine on the spot

Hereford extended their unbeaten run to five league and cup games with a slender 1-0 victory over Chesterfield at Edgar Street.

Defender Ryan Valentine clinched Hereford's third league victory of the season when he scored from the penalty spot in the 58th minute.

Both sides had openings in the first three minutes with Chesterfield's Donal McDermott having an shot pushed away for a corner by Hereford keeper Adam Bartlett.

Hereford swept straight back with Mathieu Manset releasing the ball to James Walker, but his low shot was blocked by Chesterfield's keeper Tommy Lee.

Winger Mark Marshall kept the pressure on Chesterfield when he set up Manset but the Frenchman was bundled off the ball.

Shortly before tyhe hour mark, Bulls went in front when Valentine beat Lee with a rising shot from the penalty spot after Rob Page fouled Mark Marshall in the area.

Substitute Scott Boden netted for Chesterfield in the closing stages but his effort was ruled offside by referee Andy Hall.
