Giro d'Italia - 'More human' Giro route unveiled

Sun, 16 Oct 17:11:00 2011

The route for the 2012 Giro d'Italia will be easier than in recent years when it has been labelled "inhuman" and riders are expected to spend less time on between-stages transfers.

Alberto Contador Giro route 2012 - 0

The Tour, whose route was unveiled on Sunday, will start with a 8.7-km individual time trial in Herning, Denmark, on May 5 and after three days fly to Italy.

With the first week set to favour sprint specialists, the Giro should be decided in the final week, with the penultimate stage, a 218-km mountain trek ending with the tough climb to the Stelvio, likely to create significant gaps.

The race ends on May 27 with a 31.5-km individual time trial in Milan, the third such test against the clock after the first stage and a team time trial in Verona.

Unlike last year, when exhausting, high mountain stages were lined up in succession with long, energy-sapping transfers, the 2012 route features a flat stage between two mountain treks in the final week.

"This Giro will be more human," said 2011 champion Alberto Contador of Spain, who has already announced he will not be taking part but focussing instead on the Tour de France.

Giro 2012 :

"There are more 'recovery stages' and although I don't think I'll take part, it seems to be a very interesting route," he added.

Riders have complained in the past about the Giro route, with former director Angelo Zomegnan accused of setting up a 'freak show'.

Zomegnan has been replaced by Michele Acquarone, who has promised he will take riders' demands into consideration.

That's great! well done! keep going and keep confident to our life!~
in fact, whatever we do,we should keep positive attitude and be confident to ourselves.

  2. "Zomegnan has been replaced by Michele Acquarone, who has promised he will take riders' demands into consideration."

These past few years, in my opinion, the Giro has been way better in terms of excitement than the Tour. Even if the best of the best only race the Tour. That has been because Zomegnan created an identity for the Giro, he expanded on what the Giro meant and stood for. Now he's gone, I fear the Giro will try to be a bit more like the Tour and lose excitement because of that.
I hope not, but that statement is the perfect illustration of my point. If he's gonna listen to riders then he'll screw the routes up simply because Cavendishes will want Sprints, Contadors will want mountains and Gilberts will want classic-like punchy climbs and we'll end up with a mixed soup of nothing.

But anyway, why should the riders have any say on the route in the first place? If they don't like it, if they don't think it suits them, hey, DON'T RACE! It's like the guy who doesn't like the music on the radio and call the radio station to complain! Change the channel! I don't see footballers deciding how long the match should be. I don't see tennis players deciding that instead of 15-30-40-game it should be 1-2-3-game. I don't see F1 drivers deciding which GPs will be present in the season, or even designing the tracks. It's rubbish and I don't understand it.

That's what I liked about Zomegnan, he was ruthless, he did what he wanted and they had to follow his rules. Don't like it? don't race it.

  3. It should attract a high calibre field, especially for the GC. Teams less inclined to ride if they think there is no chance in G/C or stage wins, plus we can't ignore the impact of Giro on TDF contendors, Contador the latest case. i guess they are trying to ensure a mix of attracting a good field, opening up the race a bit, more variety etc. 2011 on paper looked like the ultimate 3 week tour but in most part it failed to deliver. Partly due to Contador dominance but also because riders were knackered, due to severity, long transfers and lets be honest being more drug free.

  4. Well surely the riders will push themselves to the limit regardless of how hard the course is, so what is the point of making it easier?

  5. There maybe some cheats in the sport but they are being hunted down, its not like 5-10 years ago, the sport is moving in the right direction, sure there are always going to be cheats but that’s life What is important, it’s not the majority.

But what about football I hear you cry, that’s so much better just as long as you ignore

Inability for clubs to manage their funds
Pretty much funded by Russian and Arab oil fields
    Corruption at all levels
    Drug taking covered up
    Overpaid ‘stars’
Immoral behaviour from role models (Rooney, show some respect and values you stumpy little t*t)
Fans too stupid to work out they fuel the whole thing each year by agreeing to subscribe to sky sports or pay £50 to watch Arsenal/Chelesea etc mince around a pitch for 90 minutes. Stop watching live matches for a year and it will force a change for good.

Makes modern cycling look like a bunch of saints.

If you Google the phrase "List of doping cases in cycling", and "List of doping cases in athletics" you'll find lots and lots of results, from many sites offering precisely as the search title would suggest.

You'll also find athletics has a MUCH worse problem with doping than cycling.

Don't like cycling? Fine. That's up to you - just don't rewrite history to justify it.

As far as I'm concerned cycling is a totally discredited sport. You can't be sure who is on drugs and who isn't, or if ALL of them are. Seems to me the borderline between extreme training and cheating is wafer-thin, and in a high-tec and high-financed industry all the top riders are going to try whatever they can to be the best. The problem is worse for cycling than athletics because of the nature of the event. Marathon runners can't hope to recover from long runs for days because of the pounding, no amount of clever drug-cheating can bypass, but a cyclist's muscles can regenerate and be helped along by blood-doping and other substances which they have made it an art-form to be indetectable. Sorry but I can't be 'in awe' of those guy's miraculous endurance anymore, there is far too big a chance it is all a sham, so destroys it as a spectator sport for me and God knows I do love endurance sport (am a 3-hour marathon runner myself so know what I'm talking about).
