Masters Cup - Djokovic wins Masters Cup

Eurosport - Mon, 17 Nov 09:27:00 2008

Serbia's world number three Novak Djokovic beat Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-1 7-5 to win the Masters Cup in Shanghai.

TENNIS 2008 ATP Masters Cup Novak Djokovic kisses trophy - 0

The Australian Open champion, who lost all of his matches without winning a set on his debut at the season finale last year, played his best tennis of the week in the final at the Qi Zhong Stadium.

The 21-year-old Djokovic celebrated by kissing the court and tossing his racket and shirt into the crowd after seeing off Davydenko in one hour and 42 minutes.

"I'm very, very happy," he said. "It's a great achievement for me. The best eight players playing here says everything about the quality of the event and I would definitely put it on a level with the Grand Slams."

Djokovic, the first Serb to win the men's year-ending championship, also earned £834,000 to move to within 10 ranking points of world number two Roger Federer, who crashed out at the round-robin stage.

Having been a model of inconsistency in his earlier matches, the black-clad Djokovic played almost perfect tennis on his way to winning the first set in just over half an hour.

World number five Davydenko, who beat Briton Andy Murray to reach his first Masters Cup final, was bludgeoned into submission by the young Serbian's powerful groundstrokes and sizzling winners.

A string of top quality returns allowed him to break Davydenko's first service game and a drop shot followed by an exquisite lob gave him a 5-0 lead and he quickly.

Davydenko finally got on the board in the next game but despite having two break points when the Serbian was serving for the set, Djokovic rallied to take it 6-1.

Even when the hard-working Russian tried to mix it up by coming to the net, Djokovic had an answer for almost everything and it was no great surprise when the 27-year-old started fluffing simple shots.

He saved two match points at 5-3 in the second set and grabbed his first break of the match for 5-5 but Djokovic hit back and wrapped up his fourth title of the season when the Russian netted a service return.

The season-ending championship moves to London next season after four years in the suburbs of China's financial capital.

  1. I think Masters Cup should take place not at the end of every year.. but after a month , and so, the players could'nt be that tired at the end of a tough season and they could ,,recharge'' their bateries and play great matches..with no injuries, no stress and tiredness..

    I think Nole is not 100% lucky..he`s 100% talented!

For 2009 I see him world no.2 , winning at least 1 Grand Slam

  2. @ya I explained my opinion on Federer in my previous comments.
All the best to all players and fans, I expect some really good matches next year
    bye !

  3. Yas, someone have to lose if other takes his place. Realy no need to explain how Fed is a great player. Bdw, he is my favorit as Sena, Zidan, Jordan was. His tennis - not person. But one day there is no S, Z, J & Fed. Also means for Sampras, or if u want Rafa, Nole.. In the mid time, tennis goes on.. Nole fans dont need eager for that, but Feds maybe doo to change that way.
I have no feelings about Rafas future. Without games in back of the court, I see Noles chances greater than Murrays. Also, if you look for the part of megic as in Feds game, you can find it more in Noles for now - of course if you are not blinded in some other reasons. Realy best wishes for Fed in 09, but small chances to see his domination again.

  4. Igor: You write that Roger will break down if he will not win a GS soon. You obviously didn't notice that he did recently. Didn't watch US Open?
Why you call it ambition for Djokovic and ego for Federer? Any reason to call the same with different words (aside of being a fan of the one and a hater of the other)
And also, Federer can not improve any more means that he is perfect?! First, this is already a statement that the others are worse since they can improve. And the second, he is improving - for example on clay.

Any reasons to hate Fed? I don't see any. He did so much for tennis in general and for its image, that at least for this reason is is really great. There is obviously some reason that Murray is watching the DVDs of the matches with Federer to learn, and some others. And Federer is playing so economically as far as the energy is concerned (compared to Rafa e.g.) that he will have some power left for a couple of years.

From ya, on Tue 18 Nov 11:08AM
  5. Doha is at the same time as Brisbane, and both will give points but Doha more than Brisbane. So, lets wait till we make any statements on that!

From ya, on Tue 18 Nov 10:46AM
  6. Wasn`t Doha after AO ?
Sorry if I gave wrong info, but from more web sites I found out that Novak is playing this extra tournament before AO, Federer not ? Also points shouldn’t be taken before AO ? That way Novak is second, I expect he will earn some points in Brisbane ?!

From Igor K, on Tue 18 Nov 10:18AM
  7. Igor: I don't understand why Fed will start AO as Nr 3? Both Fed and Djokovic are playing tournaments before. Roger is playing Doha which is giving more points than Brisbane, where Djoko is playing. In addition Tsonga is also playing Brisbane, and he seems to be a nightmare for Djokovic. Well, we'll see. The Djokovic fans are so eager to see Roger dying, since they understand that this is the only way Djokovic will be coming up to the top 1. But wait! Roger and Rafa are still there!!!!

  8. Who is the player of the year?
    1 Scott (Britt)
    1 Spaniot
    1 French
    3 Serbs
    1 Russian
    1 American

Ok, respect for Federer ! .. But his messages must not collide with his reputation.. He is one of the best ever, maybe the best, will see

  11. IgorK - OK, peace man. I can understand you. Besides, at the end of the day, it is not Djokovic's fault that somebody got injured or whatever, he did what he had to do and that is to win a title, his 2nd best title (after Australian). I really hope that the four of them (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray) and maybe this one fellow from my country (some wishfull thinking on my part) will make for an exciting season next year (slam each for instance).
I know Fed was slow to acknowledge Djokovic's obvious strength and successes, and in truth I think they don't like each other too much (Fed took his (newcomer's) impersonations close to heart). Federer usually says only the "correct" things (very boring), hardly praises young players (except if they are from US, UK, France for obvious reasons), sometimes to the point of being arrogant. But when he steps on the court, he is simply amazing, one of a kind, so majestic like Zidan in football and Michael Jordan in basketball.

  12. The fact is- 2008 might have been the beginning of the end for the Swiss master. His decline began last year when he start to lose his first or second match on tournament from unseeded players like Canas (twice in a row), Volandri...
Someone said that Nadal are obsessed to beat Federer. What a stupidity! Federer's worst nightmare is Nadal on clay!!! And for sure, Federer will not win Roland Garros. Never!
Like him or not, the fact is- Federer is one of the best ever! That fact can not changed by anything.
But, at this moment he is not the best in the world. His dominion is over. He must to accept that, he no need excuses like lethargy, Infectious mononucleosis, stomach virus...
I do not understand the need to insult some great players because you don't like them. You must be frustrated, or full of hate, or incredible stupid, or what! Are you boring?

I have a question for the Serbs: Why react to provocation of them? Serbia have great players, young players of the futures and only blind can not see that!

This is about tennis, nothing else!

  13. Cut the @#$% Ray V, this was abot Novak !
Jelena will dominate next year, with sister Williams, if they are not injured. End of story man !

From Igor K, on Mon 17 Nov 2:41PM
  14. Jelena Jankovic is great just yet for being consistent.....consistent on what?.....being present in all tournament and reaching at least semi finals in all events with very few taking home the trophy......this is good for serbian womens tennis with jelena and anna around......where do you think these ladies be sitting right now if both williams sisters are always present in every event? what do you think would be their rankings if henin and clisters are still around? (they are at their peak when they retired? what would be their ranking by now if maria sharapova is injury free and is always active on the tour......allow me to give you my honest oppinion.......ana and jelena would be at the tail end of the top ten......they can @#$% few lucky wins with the ones mentioned but i dont see them winning often

From Ray V, on Mon 17 Nov 2:33PM
  15. @chegevara i didn`t want to insult Federe or his fans. This was the way I see it.
And I wouldn`t care so much to write my opinions about Federer unless:
-Text on this page was about Novak`s sucess.
-Federer injuries are very doubtfull and I see them like just as excuse for low performances this year.
    - Hist steatemens regarding Nadal and him being the best, and "there is no one else except them" are more them provocativ ! If he was the best, he shouldnt make such statemnets. it is to arrogant even for him..
Nevertheless, i don`t hate this guy, like many of people here just hate Novak (like this menthall ilnnes called nolilasoy) . I relly wish him sucess, but I very much doubt he will achive what he projected.

Djokovic and Jankovic hahahaha they could be world no. 1 in the world ( hahahaha jankovic no. 1 in the world without a MAJOR tournament woooooow soooo great or can we consider her as legend already hahaha its just because of injury, retirement etc why she is now the no. 1 mwaaaaah ) and Djokovic considers himself as one of the best hahaha shame on you man - your australian open was only PURE LUCK and believe me it will be the first and your last major until the day you die....believe me .....but of ofcourse may they will all get injured then you will have MAYBE just MAYBE your second major of your life ....that Maybe you can consider or self as one of the best hahaha just MAYBE.....DJOKOVIC sooo lousy to watch no tactics no talent soooo boring kind of player in tennis history.....Novak Djokovic CONGRATS anyway for winning the tournament in shanghai hahaha at least you won against tennis legends hahaha ( del potro, davydenko and simon ) bwahahahaha ....do you know these players guys --- they are the new legends --- legends of the losers and their king is djokovic....bwahahahaha.

  17. Igor K - get real, man! I understand that you are from Serbia and your tennis players have achieved a lot, really a lot for such a small country, and you should be very happy, but instead you start criticising the best player that has ever lived (beyond reasonable doubt), that is, Federer. I can pretty much agree with only one thing, Federer cannot improve anymore, and that is because he has fully explored his talent. If Djokovic explores his talent to the maximum, he will still never reach Federer's level because his level of talent is just lower. You will deny it, but to neutral viewer it is obvious. Djokovic may reach number 1, but he will never dominate like Fed, just quit dreaming about it so you don't get frustration later. Things that are good in Djokovic are that he is smart, hungry for success, focused and patriotic. He is going to win many titles.
Regarding the Sampras comparison - I also liked Samprass (for his net game, serve and mental toughness), but his backhand was the ugliest shot in tennis. Just look what the other players say about Federer - almost everybody says he is the best player ever. I think the one who can compare the best is Agassi (who has spent all his life playing against Sampras and less, but enough, against Federer), and he said that Federer is the best player he has ever played against despite his deep respect for Sampras.

From therealchegevara, on Mon 17 Nov 11:28AM
  18. excuses, excuses, excuses and again excuses...
nobody but nobody is giving a credit to novak. i see the hidden non-sympathy to novak.
well, looking things from objective perspective i think that he has a quality for a top 5 at least. i think also that everybody from top 10 has more talent and tennis knowledge than rafa as well.
and that comment that novak is building up a losing pattern to tsonga and murray?! well head to head novak has 4:2 against murray, and tsonga lost the most important match of his career to novak (which was the only chance for him to take a GS title).
i see a lot of envy in you people... :)

    From nick_da_serb, on Mon 17 Nov 11:11AM
  19. Personally I`m very happy being fan of Novak, Jelena, Ana, Zimonjic :-) And very proud coming from such a small country having such a players.
And what makes me more happy:
Novak goal is to be No.1 in the world one day
Federers goal last few years it to be approved better then Sampras, primary more Grand Slams then Sampras.

Obviously I will be even happier at the end, because it is soo much likely that Novak will achieve his goal. And Fedex … ;-)

From Igor K, on Mon 17 Nov 10:06AM
  20. Djokovic got lucky, the mouthy little twatgland didnt have to play any1 difficult (murray & Federer) in the whole tournament. even borg has predicted a rubbish year for djokovic next year, hes overrated and its starting to show.
