Premier League - Barton out for eight weeks

Eurosport - Mon, 17 Nov 19:30:00 2008

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton will be sidelined for up to eight weeks after damaging knee ligaments on Saturday.

FOOTBALL 2008/09 Premier League Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton celebrates scoring against West Brom - 0

The 26-year-old limped off just 17 minutes into his side's 2-2 Premier League draw with Wigan after being hurt in a challenge with Lee Cattermole.

Barton left St James' Park on crutches and underwent scans on Sunday which revealed he had suffered a slight tear to his right medial ligament.

A club spokesman said: "After further assessment today following scans yesterday, he has damage to his right medial ligament and will be out for eight weeks."

Barton, who absolved Cattermole of any blame, was philosophical as he prepared for another enforced lay-off.

He said: "I am not blaming Lee Cattermole in any way for this injury. It was a 50-50 ball and we both went for it, and these things happen.

"Obviously, it's disappointing and frustrating, and my sole intention is to knuckle down and bounce back and get fit again to help the Newcastle United cause."

The injury will result in yet another interruption to Barton's career on Tyneside, which began last summer when he completed a £5.8million switch from Manchester City.

A fractured metatarsal delayed his competitive debut, but the problems which have hampered him since have been largely self-inflicted.

He spent time behind bars on remand after being arrested following an incident in Liverpool city centre which later led to him serving 74 days in jail for assault and affray.

Barton was also handed a 12-game ban, six of them suspended, for a training ground incident involving then City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

He returned to action as a substitute in the derby defeat at Sunderland on October 25, and made his first start of the campaign three days later in the 2-1 home win over West Brom.

However, with just two further appearances under his belt, he may not play again this calendar year, further weakening the squad available to interim boss Joe Kinnear.

  1. Hey Derek T Williams, you are wrong. Leopards can change their spots, I worked in a zoo and once witnessed a leopard painting stripes on himself. I think Joey Barton can do the same if I leave a pot of paint outside his house.

  3. Are you sure he's out for 8 weeks through injury or has sneaky Bartonflown out to Austrailia to join "I'm a celebrity get me out of here" if anyone needs to resurrect their careers it must be him, would you vote to keep him in and watch him squirm eating those juicy witchy grubs and kangeroo balls or would it be one of the most sided votes ever just to prove to Barton that everyone really does hate him.

  7. You boys are right that you cannot compare Keane and Barton in the thug stakes. Anyway I come from a rugby area and they would welcome the chance to whack both of these dwarfs in a ruck I am sure. In rugby you have to suppress the urge to lay it on someone on the pitch as the very small ref actually has some authority and never stands for any backchat-you would be in the sin bin a bit quick. I have to slightly disagree with you about Roy on one point. He is no angel and even though he seems controlled in interviews, almost laid back, he is seething inside. The body language shows it and I would not want to be in the dressing room at half time if things are not going well. One more defeat and a bit of aggro towards him and he will be off.

  12. Johnmoab: I wasnt justifying what Keane did, I was explainng the circumstances as comment 14 said Keane deliberatly ended Haalands career, comment 17 is right, Keane intended to hurt Haaland but no player can try to 'deliberatley end' anyones career. That is just random and there is no actual proof it did anyway, they are still arguing over it in the courts today.

By saying 'you reap what you sow' I meant that anyone who stands over an incapacitated Roy Keane and rips the p**s and expects no payback is nieve in the extreme, if not a tad stupid.

What Keane did was wrong but it will take a few more thousand years of evolution before you remove the urge for revenge from human beings.

If I had done it, I would have walked his dog for the next year. :O)

  16. pete c, im both a nufc supporter and an irishman so i can see things from both keanes side and bartons side. both have done wrong, but how can you try to justify keane attemping to seriously hurt someone? sure halaand mocked him, but would the best way to retaliate not be by showing them what he do with a ball? what barton did was terrible, but he has done his time.

and richards0l0, you just seem like a horrible, horrible person.

  17. Jack - I didn't post that bit about them being bullies...Yahoo is jacked up ehh? I agree with you man. Being tough physically out on the pitch is different than deliberately trying to injure someone.

  18. I don't care what roy Keanes 'illustrious' career was built on. Or what his motives were for intentionally putting someone out of the game. Fact is, what he did was premeditated and malicious. Glorifying this hideous excuse for a human being e.g 'giving him a job' is inexcusable. If he walks out of Sunderland - good riddance. If Barton gets sacked good riddance.

Their attitudes are one and the same - there is no place in football for this behaviour. And the fact that Ferguson refused to rebuke Keane for what he did makes his knighthood a sham as well.

  19. neil sutton . . .no your missing my point bud, kicking someone in the leg from behind is not "hard" or big, or clever.Only mindless yobs on the terraces admire this kind of football. What narks me is that they carry this image into their future careers . .Vinnie Jones isn't hard and admits as much, but because of the way he conducted himself on the pitch . . he can sell this in films.Joey Barton is a lower table premiership player at best that few people would have heard of based on his football attributes alone, but because he's such a orrible little maggot . .he gets notoriety, I shouldn't think half the Newcastle supporters if they were honest would be comfortable with scum like that sitting next to them on their couches at home.
