Italian cyclist Riccardo Ricco has filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport against his two-year doping ban after being kicked off the Tour de France for failing a drugs test.
Ricco, 24, was suspended from riding by the Italian National Olympic Committee in July after admitting to using banned blood-booster EPO. He was kicked off the Tour de France and sacked by his Saunier-Duval team after testing positive following the fourth stage time-trial.
He initially protested his innocence but following a meeting with CONI officials, he admitted to his offence, even criticising testing procedures because he had passed many tests despite being doped.
"The athlete requests the reduction of the suspension on the basis of his collaboration with the competent authorities in this matter," the CAS said in a statement, adding that it would probably deliver a verdict in four months' time.

Eric D, Much of the life disappeared from the tour the moment he was caught. He wrongly turned the standings upside down and then punched a hole clean through the tour when he was caught. Add to that that he drove Saunier Duval out of cycling and you've got a complete negative. If the peleton can be cleaned up, you will have great riders delivering fantastic performances with their hearts, not with elevated VO2 levels.
E.P.O - IS FOR WINNERS, WELL DONE RICCO,
YOU ARE ARE TRUE FUTURE TOUR HOPEFULL...
'Touche'!. On that civilised note shall we call it a day and agree to disagree?.
After giving a vote of confidence to Riccardo Ricco, ERIC D then backtracked on his statement, assembling a shoddy excuse for his short-sightedness. This suggested that he was by no means man enough to stand up for what he believed in.
After suggesting that people would choose to ignore my stupidity you then went off on a rant about it. This suggests that you are clearly not bright enough to follow your own advice.
Not half was worried as I am that somebody could possibly view being told to shove their opinions as being tantamount to violence. Wimp.
LEE.MARIN65. I am sorry to have given your children the idea that I approve of 'cheating'. Sadly I am old enough to have followed the sport since the days when 'chemical assistance' wasnt strictly illegal and certainly wasnt considered to be cheating and so my non-P.C views are clouded by that. To be honest, I think that Ricco was pretty stupid to have been caught out but I am not deluded enough enough to think that there arent plenty of other riders who were, shall we say, better prepared. Just tell your kids that I am just an out of touch old guy who still loves the sport. Thank you for your civilised response which was a refreshing contrast to the implied violence of an earlier reply which I found quite worrying and more the sort of thing that I wouldnt want kids to read.
ERIC D. My kids read your comments and have asked me why you think it's ok to cheat. Your comments please.
ERIC D.
Let's also not forget that when he won the stages he changed the results of the whole Tour and wasted everyones time who was watching.
This guy is unbelievable he rats everyone out to try to get a break on his sentence. See you in 2 years Ricco and maybe not ever. Let's not forget he called the whole peleton vegetables while he was shoving a needle in his vein.
You're a good climber because you're a doper. Go away for two years and come back clean. Then see if you can climb
maurice1958, you wouldn't know logic if it bent you over a table and violated every one of your orifices. I felt my IQ lowering by merely reading your contribution.
As for you ERIC D, keep up those sentiments, but don't be offended when people start choosing to ignore your sheer stupidity. Didn't like the Tour de France? Tough. People don't want to read your @#$%, but it's still there. Why not go and try a leisurely pursuit that's more suited to your lax attitude on drug taking, such snorting rat poison.
Good luck Riccardo...Look forward to seeing you back again soon!. You may have injected but you injected some much needed life into the Tour as well. It came to life if only for a couple of days.
Maurice...get a grip. What does Ricco's ban have to do with death of baby P?
Ricco cheated, he was caught, he deserves punishment...end of story.
How fitting your called maurice. It's a nerd name for a nerd person with nerd ideas.
At least sexyhotda33 had an open mind, not like you baying mob. In the UK this week a baby was abused by its parents and died. You people are trying to ban a young sportsperson for 2 years, maybe life for wanting to win a race, get a life there are more important things like American football and now UK soccer, they intend maybe to test an odd player now and then.... when it suits. for drugs as if......
When were the other forums bombarded by you "SANCTIMONIOUS" important people. I support David Millar too.
For the integrity of the sport I hope the ban is upheld.
I can believe that such a narcissist would appeal the ban, he's only concerned about himself. It's harder to believe that this appeal comes with the proposition that he's helping the relevant authorities. That's the least that should be expected of an exposed cheat.
It's a shame he lacks the humility to see beyond is own ego, not realising that having his ban reduced would contribute to further damaging the reputation of the sport.
Way to go in leading the way for the weak minded of this wonderful sport.
I am an open-mineded single girl who love sports. I want to end my single life by meeting
a guy who likes sports too. Let's mingle at the club ___ kISs M ill iona ireS Co m __
What a cheek Ricco has. Go get out of our sport. We are now so fed-up with all these cheats. I know people like him do not care about either the sport or the fans only the money, so we don't need riders like that so beat it RICCO.
