Portsmouth have accepted what they described as an "exceptional bid" from Real Madrid for midfielder Lassana Diarra.
The Spanish giants reportedly had an initial £9 million offer rejected, while The Sun claims they have increased their bid to a massive £24m in a desperate effort to make Diarra coach Juande Ramos's first signing in January.
Real are short of midfield cover following a season-ending injury to Malian Mahamadou Diarra.
Portsmouth are experiencing financial difficulties brought on by the global financial crisis and said they reluctantly agreed to sell Diarra because of the size of the offer.
"We have always said that we would only allow our players to leave if we received an exceptional bid," said a club statement.
"We could not stand in the way of a move such as this for Lassana."
Portsmouth said they had "already identified" players who could replace the French international.
The ambitious Diarra will make Real his fourth club since August 2007 when he moved from Chelsea to Arsenal.
He subsequently signed for Pompey after just half a season with the Gunners, having failed to establish himself as a first-team player.
On arriving at Fratton Park, he spoke openly about his desire to attract "a really big club" and said: "The people at Portsmouth know I will not spend my life at the club."
Diarra performed superbly during the second half of last season when he helped Pompey lift the FA Cup, during which time his qualities as a specialist defensive midfielder impressed Ramos, who was then manager of Tottenham.
Earlier this season, Ramos said: "[Lassana] Diarra is someone I know perfectly well from my time in England. He is a France international and a player who is very similar to the Diarra [Mahamadou] that we have here.
"A player with very important physical characteristics as well as being a good footballer."

davidman you obviously have not watched Diarra play on a regular basis. His high level of consistency is second to none and he will prove what a class player he is at Real. As for Barry, Carrick and Hargreaves. Don't make me laugh. Barry has one foot, admittedly a very good one, Carrick is hardly setting the world on fire at United and is too inconsistent, while Hargreaves is injury prone. At the current time Diarra is better than all these players. In his position Diarra is world class. Whether he is worth £24 is open to debate, but if Real are prepared to pay it then maybe he is..Play up Pompey
Think about the £24 million Pompey & sell sell & sell!!
I don't know about his abilities in midfield, bu Diarra performed incredibly as a fullback in his few appearances for Chelsea. He played very very extremely well.
IF DIARRA IS AN ENGLISH PLAYER,THE WHOLE WORLD WOULD HAVE BEEN INNNUDATED WITH HIGH PRAISES FOR REAL MADRID BY NOW ESPECIALLY SKY NEWS AND BBC.BUT NOW,NO ONE SEE ANYTHING GOOD IN DIARRA AGAIN HAVING PLAYED FOR CHELSEA AND ARSENAL WITHIN TWO SEASONS.HOW MANY ENGLISH PLAYERS ARE PLAYING IN GERMANY,ITALY OR SPAIN?LAMPARD MISSED THE LIFE-TIME OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO INTER LAST TRANSFER MARKET.TELL ME WHO IS INTERESTED IN HIM AGAIN? NOT UNTIL ENGLISH PLAYERS EXPORT THEMSELVES TO BE EXPOSED-WORLD CUP MAY BE A JUST DREAM !!!
You guys make me laugh. Anyone who doubts the quality of Diarra hasn't seen him play, or at least not over the course of a few games. He is one of the best defensive midfielders I have seen in the premiership for a number of years and was the hub of Portsmouth's midfield. Look at how they've faltered since he has been injured. It's not so much been Harry leaving, but Diarra's absence that has contributed to Pompey's recent run of bad form. He will raise his game in a quality side and will prove to everyone that he is a player of international quality. Pompey are lucky to have an asset like him to sell in financially troubled times.
24million, you could buy a whole lot more midfield quality than 24 million for Diarra, sorry
For me, this is yet another wrong purchase!!Lassana Diarra ? I hope he proves me wrong!
Re: Davidman
Have to disagree with you, Carrick and Barry are not better midfielders and if you took off your Georges flag tinted glasses you might see how good Diara is. As for Hargreaves, he had a great world cup in 2006 and since then he spends more time with the physio than anywhere else.
If what this guy is saying is true, which i doubt it is, R Madrid are truly struggling to match the likes of barca, athletico, and valencia etg. We can all agree Diarra isnt worth the 24 million that is being put on his head by Pompey; However i reckon that being surrounded by good players will indeed - up his game to a point where he is worth the 24 million hes being bought for. Classic examples such as - Denilson,Ireland Frank Lampard himself.
OH BAD NEWS NOTT!!!
Real are short of midfield cover. When the other Diarra returns from injury this one will spend a lot of time on the bench.
hey,MR ANDY R or wateva u kal ur sef u dont tok to peole like dat on d net every one hs got s opinion so if ur upset bout wat pple tink of d english league pls grow up and learn how to swallow fool.
And I am just glad he went abroad, not to a rival Prem team...but glad mostly because ....Harry didn't poach him... why would he move to a bottom six club like Tittenham Larkspur?
Diarra is a fabulous defensive midfielder & the best player Pompey have had in his position for decades.Has had regular first team footie at Pompey, which was why he moved there. His skills helped Pompey win the F.A. Cup for the first time since 1939.
We may be on the slide, but we are Pompey, we are plucky !!

hey who gives a dam if they want to pay big money go for it pompey ,,,,,
Over the top I think! Think who you could buy with £24 million! Torres, Young, Deco, etc.
So Diarra is better than every English player? I give you 3 that suggest otherwise in his position: Barry, Carrick, Hargreaves. You are telling me that if Diarra was English Capello would put him ahead of these 3 in the Defensive Midfield role for England? Moron.
The comments of mimimutanga echo the way many foreigners feel about us now.
Just look at Platini, he can't stand the fact that we have the best players in the best league!
because we are so hated, they get jelous that their 'little' teams can no longer compete with the real cream of Europe!!
Gerrard is a completely different player from the ones you mentioned mimimutanga!!!
Also i would like to see Italy,France and portugal beat england as easy as you make out!!
Thay may well have done before but i doubt they would find it that easy now!!
And the thing you said about english players playing for big teams is @#$% the reason hardley any english players play in the teams you mentioned is because they dont bother bidding for them as they know they wont get em!!
