Akinfenwa poised for Cobblers bow

Fri 18 Jan, 06:30 PM

Northampton manager Stuart Gray will begin life without top scorer Andy Kirk but could hand a debut to new boy Adebayo Akinfenwa at Gillingham.Kirk - who has scored 11 goals this season - completed a free transfer to League One rivals Yeovil on Thursday but Gray has bolstered his striking options with the signing of Akinfenwa until the end of the season.

Fellow striker Poul Hubertz serves the third and final game of his suspension after he was sent off against Millwall on New Year's Day while Jason Crowe and Giles Coke will continue their new midfield partnership.

Captain Chris Doig has suffered a setback in his return from a serious knee injury and remains months rather than weeks away from a comeback while Mark Hughes will be hoping for a recall.

The former captain of Everton's reserves had been skippering the Cobblers in Doig's absence but was left out by Gray last week. However Liam Dolman injured himself in scoring his first goal for the club against Hartlepool and is a doubt so Hughes could come straight back in.
