Cobblers snap up Akinfenwa

Fri 18 Jan, 05:16 PM

Northampton have signed former Swansea striker Adebayo Akinfenwa on a short-term contract until the end of the season. The 25-year-old was a free agent after his contract at Millwall expired last week and he goes straight into the squad for the League One game at Gillingham on Saturday.

But Cobblers boss Stuart Gray said this was not the last of his transfer activity and that he was still looking for another striker to replace Andy Kirk, who has joined Yeovil.

Gray told the club's official website: "Adebayo is something different to what we have. He is very powerful, can hold the ball up well and he draws defenders onto him.

"This is certainly not the end of our recruitment, and we hope for some more news and to bring in more players next week.

"Bayo is not coming here as a replacement for Andy Kirk - work on that particular signing is ongoing, but he is coming here to increase the options in the squad."
