Matt Bradley scored in the 12th round of a tense shootout to give the Washington Capitals a 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
Bradley had the only goal in the shootout. The Washington winger got the puck past Oilers netminder Dwayne Roloson after the Capitals had failed to score on 11 previous shots.
"He didn't even let me say, 'Don't go'," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said when asked about Bradley's rush to get on the ice for the shootout.
"He said: 'I'm going to score. Put me out there,'" Boudreau recalled.
"He jumped over the boards and went in, did a great move and scored. It was fabulous."
Washington netminder Olaf Kolzig then stopped a shot by the Oilers' Sheldon Souray to seal the win. Kolzig denied Edmonton on 12 shots in the shootout after getting 29 saves in regulation and the overtime.
"Olie was unbelievable in goal and I got lucky to put one in at the end," Bradley said.
Washington scored four times in the second period but did not get another goal until the shootout.
Edmonton forced overtime with Shawn Horcoff's goal with 7:40 expired in the third period.
The goal was Horcoff's second of the game. He also scored in the first period.
"It (the shootout) was as deep as I've ever been involved in," Horcoff commented. "We had plenty of chances there to win it but we just couldn't."
Three other NHL contests ended in shootouts on Thursday.
Dan Cleary scored twice in regulation and Henrik Zetterberg provided the only shootout goal in the Detroit Red Wings' 3-2 home win over the Vancouver Canucks that snapped a three-game Detroit losing streak. Roberto Luongo made 47 saves for Vancouver but could not stop Zetterberg's shootout shot.
Mats Sundin and Alex Steen scored shootout goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who ended a six-game road losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.
Andrei Kostitsyn scored in regulation and again the shootout when the Montreal Canadiens edged the Atlanta Thrashers 3-2.
Goals by Brandon Bochenski and Corey Perry powered the Anaheim Ducks to their fifth consecutive win, a 2-1 road victory over the Nashville Predators.
Antoine Vermette's two goals and Martin Gerber's 36 saves paced the Ottawa Senators to a 5-1 home win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Rick Nash scored his second goal of the game with 22 seconds left when the Columbus Blue Jackets won their fourth consecutive game, eking out a 4-3 road victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.
