Diamond urges Dons to shine

Mon 18 Feb, 09:00 AM

Zander Diamond says Aberdeen will get thrashed by Bayern Munich if they do not bounce back quickly from Sunday's 3-1 SPL defeat at Hibernian. The Pittodrie side looked to be set for a morale-boosting league win ahead of Thursday's UEFA Cup last 32 second leg in the Allianz Stadium when Diamond shot them into a first-half lead.

However, a second-half comeback saw Jimmy Calderwood's men slip to a potentially damaging defeat as Merouane Zemmama, Dean Shiels and Steven Fletcher made Aberdeen pay for defensive lapses.

Having stunned Europe with a sensational 2-2 draw at home to Bayern last week, the Dons are expected to find it more difficult in the return meeting with the likes of Luca Toni, Ze Roberto and Lucio.

And Diamond admits he and his team-mates will have to raise their performance levels from their Easter Road defeat if they are to prevent the tournament favourites from inflicting a heavy defeat in Munich.

He said: "It was a massive disappointment to lose 3-1. In the first 45 minutes that was the best we have played away from home in recent weeks, if not the best of the season.

"In the second half they got a massive lift from the free-kick, although I don't know if it was a foul.

"Then Scott Severin knows himself he shouldn't have played the square pass before the second goal, but 99 times out of 100 Dean Shiels' shot would not have gone in. It was a great finish from him.

"Then we were chasing the game and that creates holes, and Hibs picked us off.

"But the heads can't be down going into the Bayern game because if we do we'll get annihilated over there."

Aberdeen dominated the opening 45 minutes at Easter Road but faced a rejuvenated Hibs side after the interval and Diamond believes the Dons' profligacy in front of goal cost them dearly.

He added: "In the first half we could have had the game sewn up. We had two or three really good chances and even in the second half we had good chances and their keeper has pulled off two great saves.

"We knew Hibs were going to come out right at us in the second half and they did that and got the three points. We're really disappointed."
